We don't have much of a choice. We don't have the spare capital to funnel funds away from the transfer kitty to pay for compensation (again) for Adkins and his backroom staff less than a year into a 3-year deal. His backroom staff including Lee Turnbull whom one must assume is working his tits off trying to find players at a fair price who can get us out of this God-forsaken division.
'Adkins Out' isn't as simple as just severing ties and getting someone else in. You can't just sack a manager and that's that. The financial implications of sacking at this stage are ones we cannot afford with such a large squad rebuilding task ahead.
I want to see what a team of his players looks like. Players who respond to his methods like they did at Scunthorpe and Southampton. If he puts together a squad and we see no improvement, by all means call for his head. But I don't feel judging his performance as a manager whilst working with this huge group of bang average slags is particularly fair. That isn't to say my patience isn't thin with regards to our performance this season; it's astonishing that there's not a good enough XI in (what was) a massive squad to beat teams in League One. I just want to give Adkins a chance to do his own thing with his own lads.
For what it's worth, I don't think the pressure is so much on Adkins as it is on the board. I can't see many people wanting to buy many of our lot, so they have to put up or shut up when it comes to wages and fees. I say to them; you want to get into the Championship? On to the Premier League? Fucking prove it. There's a blank canvas here, give Adkins the brushes to paint a great picture. It doesn't need to be multi-millions because it's been proven that you don't need to spend that to get out of here, but don't tie his hands like they were last year.
He was left with (and this is only part of the story):
Baxter as a playmaker, and everything that comes with that
Coutts as an attacking midfielder who is extremely limited.defensively
Collins at centre half - unwilling/unable to play the designated system and apparently fell out with two managers
Bob, Scoogs, Freeman, Wallace (obviously) - injury prone and unavailable
I think the big concern is recruitment. Why didn't we get anyone in on loan?
Someone posted a while ago that we are not seen as a good place to send young players.
I wonder if, strangely, last night might have been a good advert for the club from that point of view.
Che and Whiteman started and did well - if only Che could score(!), DCL came on and did his confident trick and shot - but should have hit the target, and the crowd were (basically) behind the team till it went flat at 2-1.
And we just take Long for granted now. Dropped a clanger for the first but recovered and played well the rest of the game. Developing a young player with that resilience shouldn't go unnoticed by a Division 1 team looking to blood a youngster in first team football.
Recruitment is key.
Besides that, for me, goalscoring is often overlooked as an area we need to improve.
Keep Adkins - but we need some measure of what's acceptable next season.
