Nigel Adkins on youth ("pathway", etc.)

I don't like to see his interviews. I also don't like to smell his interviews, as I find the aroma of bullshit unpleasant.

Just seen this, so apologies if this has already been posted elsewhere

Gripping , compelling and genuinely revelatory interview . There is enough in that interview to convince me he should carry on as manager next season. Wonderfully vivid.

Why does Adkins always remind me of that Burnley fan Alistair Campbell . The Blair Years.

Adkins - Cut the rhetoric , sound bites , and you could grow on us.

Me - although I don't think the bloke is the right man to move SUFC forward and worry about the Reading affect , I think we should carry on with him next season . The alternative is Holloway or equal .

I like his endeavour :)

Forget the league table, go and win the next game of football, concentrate on winning the next game of football repeated until my ears began to hurt.

Adkin-isms - if you needed to know.

Arena (the green thing, the pitch)
Endeavour (a bunch of triers not fit to wear the shirt)
Pathway (we're fukin' skint)
Hard Working (they're shit)
Good, honest (they don't know they're that shit)
A lot of unseen work (if you ate the same shrooms you'd get it)
Getting a loan in over the line (we've found the phone number - when's the deadline?)
Keeping it out of one end (conceding cos we shit at defending)
Sticking it in the other (Billy)
Scored three again at home (the oppo was utter dog shit - did you see them?)
Tough opposition (opposition)
Play Offs (I'm on my Hollybobs early May, you twat)
Created chances (got the ball in their half)

Adkins's 'endeavour' talk is basically this year's equivalent to Clough's overuse of 'situations'. You could guarantee that in a game in which we never created a clear cut chance he'd talk about players getting 'into some great situations'. As said already, far too much focus is given to these sort of interviews.

Personally i'd be delighted if the only time we heard from the club manager is after a game.

Lucky you.
The way this seasons gone, wish i'd never heard of Adkins

At risk of repeating what I may have said elsewhere I don't believe all this pathway to the first team.

This is the lifeline Adkins is clinging to in order to put a positive on having done a poor job. It's the green shoot to reassure the chairman there are encouraging signs.

Except it's a false hope.

Having beat Oldham with one of the best performances of the season he responded not by backing these bright young things but by bringing in Sammon and dropping Che and by leaving out Whiteman.

Then in the much lauded 5 youths in the squad, he went for Crampy Coutts over Whiteman and he totally ignored the compelling scoring case of giving Diego a spot in the bench opting once more for Sammon.

I hope he becomes more bold regarding the youth but it's actually all mouth and no trousers when you scratch below the surface. At least for now.

He's all "endeavour" and "pathways", I preferred Bassett's "for us to get a pen (sic), one of our players would have to get gang raped in the box" - much more eloquent.
As I've said numerous times, the last manager to annoy everyone so much with his interviews was Warnock.

Moving on from those days worked out well for us, didn't it?

He can't actually say the truth;

"These youngsters aren't good enough to get us promoted"

"If you knew what we were paying the likes of Paul Coutts, you'd understand why I have to trim the squad."

"So I need the youngsters to pad it"

Annoying and embarrassing though. Not laughable.

Although personally I find the back up comments to Adkins battle cries funnier.

I find everyone getting annoyed at his interviews annoying. :)

As pointed out elsewhere - if we were winning every week, nobody would give a flying fuck about any of this.

I think these quotes illustrates one of the bigger problems we face:

Paul Coutts - Contracted till end of June 2017

"If you knew what we were paying the likes of Paul Coutts, you'd understand why I have to trim the squad."

Coutts did many good things on the ball.

Coutts is shocking from a defensive perspective, just perplexing at times

We have a presumably very expensive central midfielder who can't defend (perplexing) but can create, and is contracted for the whole of next season.

Not an easy situation.

The problem is that Coutts' contribution, attacking wise, just isn't that great. He does offer something, but not nearly enough to compensate for the complete lack of the other side of his game.

We aren't winning though and his interviews hardly ever acknowledge the obvious problems. Certain players can be criticised, others defended regardless. Clough was hammered for it.

Does anyone get annoyed anymore though, or just think "FFS, here we go again" ?

For me, it depends on how much you are looking to the manager to explain himself. I still have faith in him, so I see these interviews as him being forced to fill 5 minutes of air time.

If I'd lost all faith, I'd be looking to the manager for explanations. That's where more and more people are finding themselves.

In the end, it's all fluff. If we continue in the same form, nothing Adkins can say will make people accept it. If we were winning and kept doing so, nobody would give a rats ass what he said.

Agreed. I included the mention of his contribution just to put the other side not to argue that it balances.

A presumably very big wage for half a player in a crucial area. (Unless we signed Coutts on a low wage because of his injury record.)

I think it's a very big issue.

Especially when it seems like Adkins would like Hammond here next season.
