Just got back.

Let's face it, we were crap :) Defensively we looked extremely poor and they just ripped us apart. Bromby was a repeat offender for getting caught by his man (the ball hit him for his goal!). Jagielka was clumsy in his challenges thus earning him a booking. Harley looked to be chasing the game when Leicester were in possession.

Tonge in midfield was dire. It was soon apparent that he's lost his blinding pace. That lad needs a good kick up the arse because the way he's playing now, he doesn't deserve a starting place. Nalis looked riled at times, not the Nalis we saw in pre-season but maybe the opposition (his old club) brought out a more rash side in him, time will tell. Ifill impressed, he has pace, strength and skill and his positioning off the ball is excellent. Good goal with his head, again, because of his position. Monty, ever the fighter, seemed to be the only one challenging some times.

Gray (get your hands down) had a better game than I've seen him for a while but he's not at his best. Release your man Gray, tends to make you get away quicker. Ain't rocket science. Still, calm and collected for the penalty (was a bit worried after the one he skyed at Worksop). Webber showed some very good touches and made the most of the poor service. He's like lightening and has some crafty tricks.

Subs:

Kabba: looked a lot stronger today than in the past, didn't go to ground as quick. Wasn't too sure he'd score from the penalty as his run up looked too short but the ball was well placed. Hassled their defenders.

Gillespie: Fitted into the team well. His touch was excellent and instrumental. Still nifty despite his age.

Shipperley: Many slagged him when he signed for the club but he can obviously do a job for us. Big (all muscle) and strong, he can hold the ball up for the faster but weaker players (Webber and Kabba) to run off him. Seems to be the 05/06 equivalent of Chief.

What the hell the defence were doing for their goal? They just watched the ball bounce off the ref and into the path of a running Leicester player. Not good enough I'm afraid.

Upfront = excellent
Midfield = room for improvement
Defence= bollocks

Still, we're top of the league :) and with a decent goal difference.

Watford are one up at PNE and Derby and Brighton are drawing 1-1.

Thought we were poor for 80 minutes to be honest, unfortunatly could only watch on Sky not in 'real life' but the lads didnt look organised. Ifill and Webber in my opinion were the better players. Well done Mr Warnock on the subs because Leicester at the time were going to take three points. Its only the first game of the season so plenty of time for the lads to gell. Think we have a really good chance this year, played crap.won 4-1

never thought i'd see the words Tonge and blinding pace mentioned in the same sentence.. nice post though

"Defence=bollocks!"

Nothing has changed in 11 years. Same old same old :D

Oh how we have fallen from grace.
We took things for granted in those days.
It's upsetting really.
Feel like finding some rope. :-(

Worth remembering when we're watching the current kids.

Difference is, Jagielka played 150 matches in his first four seasons for us.

Our current crop of youngsters play about half a dozen matches a season if they're lucky and then disappear for months on end.

Insightful and one of the main reasons for our promotion.

10 years ago, we'd just hit a rocky patch where we all thought 'typical Blades going to fuck it up when it counts', but went on to beat Southampton (what happened to them too?) and then go unbeaten to the end of the season. A million miles from where we are now.

The sad thing is every single player mentioned in that part would walk into this current side and not all of them were anything special , great post , how we have fallen in the last 11 years . Mind you , Leicester did shit on their creditors twice to get where they are today which trains the success a little bit for me , and so does the f*****g blue and white kit , still hope they win the league though , as ever UTB - we can dream .......

Aye and Warnock was in charge back then.
To be fair, we didn't need to worry about defence as much then because we always had shitloads of strikers available, up until certain dates anyway.

So this is why the scrouts from Leicester wish they hadn't caught that train.

Let it go Linz.

The last home game of the previous season warnock was booed on the end of season lap of the pitch. 12months later he's a god.
Funny old game.

Fast forward ten years and he never had a bad game, never signed a bad player, never had a bad season and made progress every season.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder!

Remember walking home from that match saying to my mate 'how the hell did we win that?' We were absolutely dire but as BBB says, any of that team would walk into the current side of non-entities

I remember the team and Warnock got dogs abuse after we lost at QPR early on that season. Then we won 8 on the spin and life didn't seem so bad...

Bolton away at the back end of the season , ( silent will have the facts) was the start of jags, tongy and monties claim to 1st team places
I think we drew the game 2-2.They had been making spasmodic appearances but not regular starters,that was the start for Warnock to use them more
Often.They grew into the team and it didn't happen overnight.We have a number of young players at that stage now and bringing them in and out is the way to get them up to 1st team speed (granted we were in a higher division then but the same principle applies )
Adkins is an experienced manager and he recently said we have some talented youngsters ( I agree ,I watch them ) we are fans so the ability to bring
talent through is in the hands of the professionals .It's not something you can rush and his choice to leave them out at Millwall would have been for a good reason,we have to trust him. A man who brought players through at previouse clubs !! Scunnie and soton ,that says a lot.

I actually bought a copy of this game on DVD for £3, in my mind I thought it was a dominant 4-1, I was even at the game! (albeit 16).

When I watched it back I was astounded at how poor we were and how poor a game of football it was too. Also some dubious refereeing decisions.

I'm afraid you've misremembered. For Jagielka, Montgomery and Tonge it did happen overnight, they were thrown in at the deep end and cemented a place in the first team pretty much straight away.

At 17 Jagielka made his debut in the last game of the 1999-00 season then went on to play 15 league matches the following season.

Montgomery broke into the team in 2000-01 and played 27 league matches that season.

Tonge played a couple of times at the end of 2000-01 then played 30 league matches the following season.

By contrast, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is 19 and has only played 6 league matches. De Girolamo is 20 and has only played twice!

These players are either slow developers or simply not good enough. Which is it?

We played about 50 games though, 15 games didn't make Jaggi a regular, nor does 27 or 30.

And players develop at different ages, like all kids do.

Personally, I think if you've not established yourself in L1 by the time you're 21 it's unlikely that you will but even then there are exceptions.

Hi Sunderland - any chance of putting those highlights on this forum. Thanks in anticipation.

Jesus. That game makes me a bit depressed and angry. Watching Paul Ifill, never really, really for us what he was for Milwall just saunter past Leicester's defence.

And Tongy is now biding his time at Stevenage. They went two up against Northampton on Saturday. I just knew they'd lose. As soon as he signed for Stoke, his career as a footballer was over.

Hmmm. Wonder if we had any good players come to the club or through the club after that?
What an amazing bollocks up between then and now.
Who is responsible for all those bad decisions?
