George Long

BBC stats say they didn't have a shot on target - and this time I think they're right.

As you say the collecting the ball, punching etc are all coming on as well. Great to see.
They fired over and wide quite a few times only things long had to deal with were corners in the second half

Looks calm and confidence is growing as you would expect when you play well and probably feels he is now the number one on merit, I wonder what will be said on here if he has a couple of bad games though?

I am delighted he has gone from absolutely abysmal to average. I for one never expected it and am shocked by his progress.

Things that have stood out, in my opinion, since he came back from his loan are:
- our penalty area is becoming increasingly "his". He owns it. The confidence he has now is great. The Plenty of improvement to come but that's to be expected anyway.
- His kicking is very decent. I'm really impressed with it. I also appreciate the fact that he looks to release the ball early to initiate a counter attack when the opponent's attack comes to an end.

Goalkeeper is 50% shot stopping he's proved himself adequately in that department .
Now the other 50% is coming together nicely.

The lads got it in his locker. Still suffering with a bit of nerves taking short goal kicks but not sure I would play it short to mceverley, Collins or Edgar personally. Needs it think a it quicker but will come.

Some said he would take over as number 1 and let's hope it lasts because it's one less thing to worry about

Bump.

With all the talk of the need to get shut of Long i thought i'd remind people of how well he was playing earlier in the season.

Whilst I've noticed the improvement in George, he has gone from been horrific (Exeter 4-4) to average at best. I know he's young etc. and may get better (no guarantees) but I think we are doing the right thing in offering the best deal for the club. It would he a sad state of affairs when an average L1 GK can hold a club to ransom when in truth he can easily be replaced. We're not talking about an Alan Kelly or Paddy Kenny here.

That said, if he does sign then great. My worry with George is that he is extremely quiet and does not seem to stamp his mark on the game or team and I'm not sure if changing a personality trait like that can be coached.

What I just don't get and yes I understand that George can go either way, but who is the keeper we are replacing him with?

Adam Smith doesn't look any better and my mate, a Northampton fan says he is also a liability, especially under the high ball, so tell me who we are bringing in who is BETTER than what you want to get rid of.

Ramsdale would get his chance, only
18 but easily good enough for this turgid league,as I have said before if he's playing for England at under 18 s,he's good enough for 3Rd division.
It really is the 3Rd division not divi 1

While I see your point we can't just keep poor players till we know who's coming in. We have just released loads of dross, should we have kept them until we knew who would definitely replace them? It's the transfer market, it's unpredictable.

Before the age thing gets smashed around.. Buffon is 38, casillas 35, Foster 33, Friedal was signed from Villa by Spurs at 40

Paul Robinson sat doing nothing at Burnley (36)... Get him in as a future goalkeeping coach, would still do a job in league 1 for a season and I am sure he'd move for 1st team football and coaching chance? He could then work with whoever is below him whether it be an academy prospect or a young lad from Northampton...

We said that about Long and looked what happened virtually destroyed him.
Remember the 4-4 draw.
Stick with George he'll be reight

He's not ready and being in the England U18s does not automatically make him ready.
He's a fine prospect but at the current stage of his development hw would get eaten alive, potentially setting him back.

That's a good shout

Wasn't George Long in the England set up at that age?

Just saying

We don't want to get rid of him though, we've offered him a contract.

It could simply well be that if George won't accept the "£4K" per week, the lad at Northampton will, and Wilder rates them both the same?

Well depends if you consider long a poor keeper, which you do. I think he's decent for this division and I think if I was manager I would ensure I have someone better before I let him sign elsewhere.

I think people are getting Carried away with this fresh broom. Wilder needs to use more than one brush when dealing with players, some he will need to use for a short while and some will be a bargaining chip. I would only let Long walk if I know I was getting someone to make this team better but hey we all have our pin dolls.

Don't we want to get rid of him? Some think we have only offered him a contract to get compo. I am not paying either keeper 4K but j get your drift and looking at smiths best bits of last season, I am keeping Long.

George was like a 10 year old schoolboy in that 4-4 draw albeit light years away now . . We need a clean sweep and fresh blood. Just think how physically and mentally tiring it is for us lot over the last 5 / 6 seasons following the blades , never mind playing for them .

From Longs last radio interview , I don't think he has the mental strength or intelligence to cope at the lane , due to too many negative memories , performances, and brainwashed that he thought the team last season was fine and dandy .

Wilder IMO is doing everything possible to get rid , not to keep him.

May be wrong but they say a change is good as a rest, and Long and the club need a change in the net .

That's my point made in Sheff.....The lad from the youth team was heralded a bit as he was in the England set up....lots of players play for their country at Youth level and never make it.
