Pele coming to the Lane
Posted on: Fri 05 Oct 2007
Sheffield United are about to bring the world's greatest footballer - Pele - to Bramall Lane.
The massive coup for the Blades comes as the club strengthens its links with Brazilian giants Sao Paulo.
For the last 12 months United have been working up a cooperation agreement with Sao Paulo and, in the final stages of negotiation, it has generated significant interest from Pele.
United director Simon McCabe and club representative and long standing friend of the McCabe family, Harry Demetriou, have been working on the deal which will see Pele and his Under 17 Academy side play in a series of games.
Sao Paulo president and directors are also expected to visit along with a representative age group team.
Pele will be a guest of honour at United's home game against Ipswich on 9th November and then will attend Sheffield FC's 150th anniversary game against Inter Milan at Bramall Lane two days later (8th November).
The Brazilian legend is also expected to be involved in a number of other events during his stay in the city, which he visited in the 60s as a club player with Santos and with the Brazilian national team for the 1966 World Cup.
Simon McCabe said: "This is fantastic news for Sheffield United, all our fans, the city and, of course, Sheffield FC in their anniversary year.
"As a club we have made remarkable progress in the last few years and have become a truly international footballing organisation with links in China, Africa, the Caribbean and now South America.
"Pele's ears have been twitching about Sheffield United as we have developed our relationship with Sao Paulo. He has been excited about the opportunities that are about to open up for his country's young players through the link-up with the Blades.
"It is a great honour such a footballing legend as Pele has taken interest in Sheffield United and we look forward to welcoming him to the family club.
"He has heard so much about United that he now wants to see the club first hand and at the same time take time out to visit the first soccer club in the world - Sheffield FC," added Simon.
United expect massive media and public interest in the visit, and Sheffield FC Chairman Richard Timms said: "This is terrific. The world's greatest-ever player meets the world's oldest club
"For Pele to visit at a time when the world's first football club celebrates its 150th anniversary is remarkable, and a perfect way to mark our unique milestone. It will be another great occasion in what is going to be an exciting month in the history of football in Sheffield.
