Pele coming to the Lane

Sheffield United are about to bring the world's greatest footballer - Pele - to Bramall Lane.

The massive coup for the Blades comes as the club strengthens its links with Brazilian giants Sao Paulo.

For the last 12 months United have been working up a cooperation agreement with Sao Paulo and, in the final stages of negotiation, it has generated significant interest from Pele.

United director Simon McCabe and club representative and long standing friend of the McCabe family, Harry Demetriou, have been working on the deal which will see Pele and his Under 17 Academy side play in a series of games.

Sao Paulo president and directors are also expected to visit along with a representative age group team.

Pele will be a guest of honour at United's home game against Ipswich on 9th November and then will attend Sheffield FC's 150th anniversary game against Inter Milan at Bramall Lane two days later (8th November).

The Brazilian legend is also expected to be involved in a number of other events during his stay in the city, which he visited in the 60s as a club player with Santos and with the Brazilian national team for the 1966 World Cup.

Simon McCabe said: "This is fantastic news for Sheffield United, all our fans, the city and, of course, Sheffield FC in their anniversary year.

"As a club we have made remarkable progress in the last few years and have become a truly international footballing organisation with links in China, Africa, the Caribbean and now South America.

"Pele's ears have been twitching about Sheffield United as we have developed our relationship with Sao Paulo. He has been excited about the opportunities that are about to open up for his country's young players through the link-up with the Blades.

"It is a great honour such a footballing legend as Pele has taken interest in Sheffield United and we look forward to welcoming him to the family club.

"He has heard so much about United that he now wants to see the club first hand and at the same time take time out to visit the first soccer club in the world - Sheffield FC," added Simon.

United expect massive media and public interest in the visit, and Sheffield FC Chairman Richard Timms said: "This is terrific. The world's greatest-ever player meets the world's oldest club

"For Pele to visit at a time when the world's first football club celebrates its 150th anniversary is remarkable, and a perfect way to mark our unique milestone. It will be another great occasion in what is going to be an exciting month in the history of football in Sheffield.

Wow  will be great a day and week for the City - by the way they have described it - it sounds like he as signed a contract to play lol

Webbo got his dates mixed up you reckon? ;)

Nothing new there then!

Great news about him coming to the lane:)

Pele could still play.

He even played with broken ribs in escape to victory against those dirty Germans!

go Pele!

:D

What a massive let down this is, i couldn't give two hoots about Pele coming over here. He was a great player and i'm sure it will be great PR but personally i'm bored of hearing about our off field success; i'm a fan of football not business and this news is about as exciting as the crisis facing the Northern Rock.

Perhaps the club shouldn't bother doing anything like this then?

No link up with the oldest club in the world?

Why bother eh?

Did i pass comment on the link up with Sheffield FC?

Don't let the facts get in the way of your razor sharp sarcasm.

Can't understand why it's such a letdown for you?

I think it's great getting visitors such as Pele.

I do too SF, theres going to be a large amount of media attention on the event, not just pele coming but Sheffield FCs anniversary, and it can only be good for the club to be involved in such and event...might get him to sign his autobiography
as long as he doesnt write keep it up on!

maybe we can persuade him to take up a part time playing contract!?

Or give him the managers job:D

I sort of agree with what you're saying. Although Pele visiting the lane is a good thing it annoys me that we are trying to detract from the on the pitch problems. I was hoping that we would be announcing a new loan signing to help sort our defence or midfield.

At least we'll see one good player on the pitch tonight!

:D:D:D
