Moving on from the negativity of yesterday, I have to admit how wrong I was about Coutts.

Last season I would have given him away for free, but now he's fit i think he's a class act at this level.

Calm on the ball, good first touch and can pick a pass.

A player I'd definitely want us to keep next season.

So for me we've got 4 entire players from our current squad that I would keep.

My worry is that we're still handling him with kid gloves re: his injuries..if he can make it through to the end of the season and play most of the games, then it's a yes from me.

With all the talk of a clear-out/contracts ending perhaps we should be looking more at who we'd keep...

I'd go Brayford, Sharp, Adams, Coutts and Done so far.

As above Pete, but add NA signing Edgar and Hammond permanently, Collins and JMac as back up defenders, Bash and Long and I think that's what we'll be saddled with as a starter for ten next season

It's tough, because a lot depends on who we can get in..but yes, I'd keep them lot and hopefully add DCL to the first team set up.

We need another keeper, but I'd certainly keep Long.

I guess( us fans) are only looking at keeping a core of 4-5 or so first team players..and that's if the one's we actually want to stay don't leave/get sold!

I suspect some such as Jay-Mac, Edgar, Harris, may well be around next season and I wouldn't be too put out by that dependent on who comes in..

I don't think you were wrong about him Pete. He was dire. Now he is one of the few names that would go straight into the team sheet.

A vast improvement and I like to think that my shouting at him to sort himself out or do one has made the difference.

I'll hold my hands up here too, i would have carried him back to Derby up until a few months ago. Now he is our main man and playing like he's got a new pair of legs on! Unbelievable turnaround from him and fair fucks to him for proving me and many others wrong. Keep it up Couttsy lad

Said it before, when my mate in Preston heard we were signing Coutts, he was gutted, he said they loved him and would have him back in an instant. My mate in Derby said the same (but did say he was coming back from a serious injury, so don't expect miracles), looks like it has taken him a lot longer to get over the injury than he, or others expected (or he was rushed back too soon?)

At the moment it's only him and Sharp that are a joy to watch play for us. Sharp for his constant battles against opposition defenders and leaving it all on the pitch, and Coutts for his quality on the ball.

He has certainly improved a hundred fold in the last three months, still has some stamina issues as he was blowing after 70 minutes on Saturday but huge improvement in him.

I think you're bearing too much of an emphasis on form and using it to overreact about his overall ability. It's always more of a reliable method to measure a players ability over a longer period of time, and for the vast majority of his stay here he's been totally awful.

I'd say a big factor is that now he is playing in tandem with Brayford. They are good friends and Derby fans talked of their "telepathic" understanding. It's no coincidence at all that he has improved dramatically since Brayford returned.

Just as it would be silly to judge his entire footballing ability on the basis of a few games he might have put in a good performance. So what you've got to go on then, is a sensible medium of those - which is the best part of the time he's been here. And for that, he's been awful.

And if he's been struggling with injury and fitness throughout the time you allegedly watched him? Or playing under a different manager, it's more sensible to take things like this into account rather than sticking to a judgement from a long time ago because it suits your personal crusade.

He was our best player at Barnsley and Swindon last season when he wasn't 100 per cent fit and always showed a great first touch and football brain. And you have not seen him for around 50 per cent of his time here. So how can you make a comment on his performances above, when you haven't seen them?

7 months is enough of a time period to form an opinion on a player. It's more reliable than the 3 months I haven't been watching him. And infinitely more than the few games the OP suggests has all of a sudden turned him into a player worthy of keeping.

Yes, how someone played in a 7 month period under a different manager a year ago is much more valid than the current and continued form of a player under a different manager :s

He's had an 8 year career at first team level, been widely acclaimed everywhere he has been. He then suffered a serious injury which has taken a long time to come back from. Certainly shouldn't be judged solely on games played the aftermath of that injury. Thankfully, for him & us, the signs are that he is getting back to being the very good player he has always been.
