Leaving tactics and individual performances aside, what last night showed to me is how much this team relies on confidence. We started the game OK but after the farce of the ref's assist for their 1st and the lack of a red card when Baxter was through (not sure whether it should have been or not) and a 2nd for them, we went to pieces, no-one wanted the ball, when they did have it they panicked and passes were going all over the place.

Fast forward 30 mins and after we got our 1st they seemed to be re-charged and all of a sudden, passes were finding the right players, we had much more movement and Wigan went the opposite way

How do we solve it, not sure but I guess it goes back to replacing certain players so we don't fall apart so easily, again we conceded basic goals straight through the middle.

It seems we can only all out defend or pile bodies forward and suffer the consequences at the back. We haven't got the mindset to do both affectivity as a team.

Yeah I read that. I didn't hear the the interview but saw a post on here about it.

Unfortunately he wasn't, and I can't think of a time over the period of his loan so far that he has been MoM. I'm disappointed because I would like to see him succeed (like anyone that pulls on the shirt) but he hasn't shown enough to prove he is any better than what we already have. It could be he is simply taking more time to settle in and we could see an improvement but only time will tell. What I don't want is for us to be lumbered with an aging player on large wages (seems to have been a common theme in recent seasons!) with nothing much to offer......

The game was a tough one because on one hand we were awful at times (as it showed when we ended up 3-0 down at one point) but on the other, you can't fault the attitude in the comeback.

I hope the comeback last night gives the players some more belief and we can use it to push on - again only time will tell. Bring on the next game!

Going 3-0 down then fighting back to score 3 is a major confidence booster. Think how Wigan must be feeling at seeing a 3 goal advantage slip away. That will have been a moral sapping event which may just cost them.

Goals are there in the team but it's getting the balance right. I think Adkins still has work to do and last season we wouldn't have come back like that.

Extremely poor football team, low on confidence, not willing to work very hard unless it's in a glamour cup tie finds itself 3-0 down due to a total lack of effort and common decency and decides it might as well have a go rather than face the shitstorm it's going to face at full time.

But that's the issue. It wasn't the same team playing in the glamour cup game as last night. It seems we have two different teams and tactics. Defend like buggery and do sod all going forward like Old Trafford, or be more expansive and attacking and be vulnerable to conceding, last night and Peterboro. Tactically we do not have the players to be more expansive and still keep it tight at the back. Until new faces appear, expect us to go back to the tactics of the last few league games, keep it tight and hope to nick something.

Ultimately, we have conceded a hatful of goals again. Gillingham, bury, Colchester, Shrewsbury, Peterborough and Wigan have all put 3+ past us. We got away with it last night, but the way I see it is we wont possibly go up with this defence.

Credit should be given for the comeback, but don't even dare to suggest we shouldn't be going three down in the first place.

Of course we shouldn’t be going 3-0 down. Similarly, of course they shouldn’t throw away a 3 goal lead. These strange incidents happen in football and it’s about looking at the bigger picture.


We’ve gone away to the most expensively assembled side in the division (a club still benefitting form parachute payments) who have just beaten a top 2 side and had an extra 2 days rest while we suffer the effects of a gargantuan effort at Old Trafford and got a point despite the ref assisting a goal for them, failing to send their player off when by all accounts he should have and denying us a good penalty shout. That sounds to me like a good effort overall (albeit with flaws and mistakes leading to us being 3-0 down).


I can’t believe quite a few (not specifically aimed at you Barney) have been so critical after this game. Same with the 0-0 away at Burton. Drawing away from home against your promotion rivals is fine and not the cause of our problems. Look at the games against Colchester, Crewe, Oldham, Port Vale, Shrewsbury etc. to see why we are where we are. If instead of 1 point, we’d taken 13 points (like we should be looking for really. That’s wins against the bottom sides and drawing at Vale) we’d be right in the mix and nobody would really have any complaints (that’s even allowing for the Gillingham debacle, the Millwall defeat, the frustrating draw against Southend and the frustrating defeats against Posh and Bury).


It’s the failure to turn up against those poor teams at the bottom who seem to want it more than us that I take issue with. I’ve been fairly pleased when we’ve come up against Burton, Wigan, Coventry, Wallsall etc.


It’s imperative that we put that habit to bed starting with a win in Essex on Saturday.

One of the things people used to say about Monty was that his tackles were generally to win the ball back he'd just lost and that was very true of Hammond last night.

So we lost. The score was always an aggregate score so whilst the second leg was 5-5 the score was still 7-6 to them. The 'equaliser' wasn't an equaliser because we were still losing.

Although Tuesday's result gives us the same number of points as a drab 0-0 draw would have done, I think that it will have far more of a positive impact on the rest of the season. Comebacks like that can give the players (and fans) huge confidence in our ability to bounce back, and that will hopefully have a very positive psychological effect. If (or "when") we go 1-0 or 2-0 down in a game between now and the end of the season, we can remember the Wigan game and know that if we keep on going we can turn it around.

In 2002/3, the league cup game against Leeds had a very similar impact. Whilst people rightly remember Jags' wonder goal and Ndlovu's winner, the game itself wasn't that great for 90 minutes and it looked liked we'd be beaten 1-0 due to a crap own goal. However, 4 minutes of injury-time brilliance gave us an incredible belief for the rest of the season. Even in the play-off final, the awful start didn't necessarily mean that we'd lost and if the penalty had gone in, I'm sure that we'd have gone on and rolled them over.

So, on paper the draw was a draw and gives us one 'standard' point for the league table. However, I think that it could have longer consequences for the rest of the season.
