The people of Manchester are strange.....been welcomed with open arms by Man City fans.......had great nights out when we stayed over for the FA Cup semi-finals at OT but feck me....some of the citizens of Manchester could start an argument in an empty room. Until I went to Manchester I didnt realise that asking for directions to a particular Chinese restaurant was an invitation to have a 5-aside brawl off the back of Deansgate.........

I live in Manchester and have for about 5 years. Stay away from Deansgate Locks, it's a shithole, I worked there for a number of years. If you're wanting real ale in the city centre then go for Albert's Schloss. It's quite a new bar but probably the best in the city. I personally can't wait for the tie, I can actually walk it to the ground in about 15 minutes!

Thanks for that CB. I was going to go on the train but don't think I'll bother now. Camouflaging the station is just plain feckin' stoopid if you ask me

You beat me to it. I was going to say it wasn't exactly unrecognisable, it's a big place with trains

Actually, I have to say it's a really impressive refurbishment, the roof is a big sweeping glass structure and they've kept some of the original features such as the ticket kiosks.

However, when you get to the platform area, it's still dingy, claustrophobic and full of diesel fumes, so better to look at than use

Yep, proper boozer, absolutely outstanding beers, CAMRA awards blah blah blah. Crucially walkable from Stockport station, so feasible to stop off for a few and then remount for 10 mins into piccalilli

True that, the Hope a couple of hundred yards further up the road also good. Can divert via the Crown on the way back.

Manchester itself finally has the Piccadilly Tap open which for convenience is great, although it's a tad pricey and not the largest. Would probably either go for the Knott by Deansgate or the Paramount on Oxford Road

Piccadilly Tap is pretty good, also there is a real ale bar in Deansgate Market which is well worth trying too.

Lessons learned............nowadays...to avoid getting into any kind of fracas I take a packed-lunch !!!!

Also within 5 mins walk of the station is The Red Bull on Hillgate - best Robinsons pub in Stockport. Quality bar staff too.

If your feeling energetic - Red Bull, back to the A6 for The Magnet (and one just down the hill from it), 5 mins further on for the hope and then jump a taxi either back to Stockport station or one stop down the line to Heaton Chapel. That's an hour or so killed before kick-off.

For a bit of unusual shopping try Afflecks Palace off Piccadilly Gardens. Wierd and wonderful from top to bottom.

A good Manchester crawl from Piccadilly - into the centre to the Old Grey Mare and Circus Tavern on Portland Street (two small boozers for lovers of dingy pubs - awesome), wander down Portland Street and find Peveril of the Peak, carry on down Bridgewater Street via Rain Bar (modern but decent ale - and the first clean toilets you'll see on this crawl) then to Britons Protection (my favourite pub in the city). You're now 2 mins walk from the tram to Old Trafford.

That is the one that we always do in Manchester. Have to say, I think that Peveril of the Peak is better than Britons Protection, but that is a matter of opinion!
