This season I suggest the 2nd placed automatic promotion spot will need a lowish points haul of around 87 points as there is a lack of outstanding teams.

We have 28 games remaining and need 61 points to get 87 points, that's 2.2 points per game on average.

The manager knows his players now and has the key signing of Dean Hammond bedding into the team. He talks about him as though he will stay with us until the end of the season at least. The manager considers his presence vital so we have to treat that level of respect at face value and trust him.

Round about this stage of the season the manager should searching for a settled side and style of play. If we are going to achieve automatic promotion and over 2.2 points per game then we desperately need to improve.

Who knows the manager might have a couple of rabbits to pull out of the hat in January but if we don't settle down and urgently improve and then gain some consistency this year then we could be out of touch by January 1st.

The remaining fixtures this year are listed below and I guess the results to show what's needed to gather points at that rate:

Shrewsbury(H) 3 points
Barnsley (A) 3
Coventry (H) 3
Scunthorpe (A) 1
Wigan (A) 1
Bradford (H) 3

Total 14 points = 2.3 points per game average.

If we do achieve 14 points or more then we have the hope of a Happy New Year but anything less could lead to us being also-rans and at best in the Play-Off lottery.

We can do it anything is possible in this league but not without some changes to the squad.

Get a centre back like Burn or Grandison in then offload someone such as Flo and bring in Sawyers or Roofe that would be a start. Also look for a winger that can play either left or right and move Done back as a striker. That would be my rough plan.

Difficult to argue with these stats. End of the day they are a reflection of what's actually happening on the pitch and anyone who expects that Utd can suddenly step up a gear and simply turn it around isn't being realistic IMO.

Whilst I admire your outlook Woody, I can't share it right now.
I'm usually half full when a season is in the pre Xmas stage as anything can change in football at the shake of a stick.
However.... Rarely in 55 years of attending bdtbl have I been as disheartened by a United team as this current one. A huge turnaround in form, application, enthusiasm and certain personnel is needed to transform this lot.
I just don't see it happening anytime soon, but if it did by some miracle, I'd be happy for Woody to beat his chest in a "What did I tell you" fashion!

Being sensible everyone knows top two is gone now but top six is still possible with propper signings in January, and if Wigan and Coventry do run away with it there is nothing all that special behind them to fear in the play offs.

However we need a decent return from the games mentioned from now until January to keep in touch, nine points minimum really, anything less and then I think we really will have to write off this season.

The answer to the OP is no - not a chance now IMO.

I see no way of suddenly winning the majority of our games even if there is a great singing or two in the JTW.

Even if we did improve, play-offs are the best we can hope for.

I'm hoping I'm proved wrong but I'm resigned to a mass clear-out in summer and then we'll see what Adkins is made of.
