The results of Chris Morgan's U21 side seem reasonable this season, a good win for them last night. I always want to learn new things about the young players at the club, but it's not always easy. From the official site:

Speaking after Tuesday's 3-2 victory over Brentford, Chris Morgan says he is pleased with the 'progress' his development squad are making this season.

What progress have been made? Who's improved and how? Is anyone getting closer to a first team call up?

A double from striker Jake Wright and another from CJ Hamilton helped United end the Bees eight-game unbeaten run in the capital and Morgan was delighted the application and desire of his young side.

Good to know, but it would be really disappointing if they were careless and lazy. What else did they do well?

He remarked: "We worked on a few things and targeted Brentford's weaknesses and it was pleasing that what we had worked on over the weekend came off in the game situation.

What 'things' did you work on? What were Brentford's weaknesses? How did you make it come off? Are the U21 tactics similar to the first team's?

"We have now played Hull, Huddersfield and Brentford in the space of three weeks, all of whom had been on long winning runs, so to have won twice and lost once when we should have got something at Huddersfield, shows we are making very encouraging progress."

It's great that results are improving, how did you manage to achieve it? What's different to last season's U21 team?

Morgan added: "The lads are buying into what we are asking of them, we are playing regularly and by in large we are playing with a young group who are all gradually maturing both on and off the field.

What are you asking of them? Who's improved the most? How have they matured?

"We have beaten clubs from higher divisions consistently throughout the season to date and the lads can be pleased with what they have achieved, but as they know there is always room for improvement."

What should be improved on? Besides the obvious, 'working hard', what should they do to improve?

I'm not trying to have a go at Morgan, nor the quoted article. There may even be valid reasons for not giving too much away. But I would like to point out that - if you want to share things in a little more detail, there will be people who'll be interested in hearing about it. You don't have to worry that we will find it too geeky or boring! :)

Bergen. Sorry your thread's been hijacked. Personally, I don't think we should be giving out details of what we do in training or what we work on. I'm not even comfortable with the amount of news on our youth team as it is.
I don't like the idea that kids who have yet to kick a ball for the first team are already minor celebrities. I worry that it can affect their mentality and attitude.
I appreciate people are interested but that shouldn't be more important than the young players development.
If you have a look on the other forum (BM) there's a couple of retired blokes who watch the u-21s regularly and post brief reports on who played well, who didn't etc.

When are you going to stop doing that and actually realise that it really isn't as hilarious as you probably think it is.

When you grow up and stop posting your anti Blades negative drivel!

So I guess that will be a very long time. :)

You wouldn't smile to his face

You're correct, I stopped hanging around the school gates years ago! (well certainly after that misunderstanding with..maybe that's for the off topic board.)

I think it makes sense to not give too much away on U21 players individual strengths and weaknesses and focus on attitude, desire etc. of the group for a couple of reasons.

1. If we start bleating on about Joe Boggs’ blistering pace and dazzling skill, Joe Bloggs will develop an ego which could be detrimental to his progress and could also prompt a Prem club to take him for a pittance given that EPPP means they can.

2. Singling out individuals could harm the confidence and morale of those not getting the individual praise.

3. Reinforcing the team effort will help to develop the team ethic amongst the youngsters.

So whilst it would be interesting to read more in depth analysis of where the kids are at, I think it’s best that we don’t get that much information.

I could say the same with your blind-faith, unrealistic, pie in the sky....(I could go on) uber positive bullshit.

Sounds like we could do with this Joe Boggs (or Bloggs) in the first team!
