Just watched the dvd of the 02/03 season (on the insistence of my 4 year old daughter - apparently she had it on twice yesterday as well :) ) and have to say the current lot are a million miles away from that team. Characters and leaders all over the park, played the game with energy and pace, could play it or battle, whichever way the game went. Apart from the obvious - Michael Brown and his goals - there was brilliant performances all over the place, Kabba, Nuddy, Jaggers, McCall, et al and I'd forgotten how good Michael Tonge was, he totally battered right backs that season. I'm a fan of Baxter and tend to think of him as similar to past players Tonge, Hodges, Hutchison but he's a country mile off what Tonge was in 02/03.

The one amazing thing comparing then to now, we averaged about 16k in 02/03, now in a division lower, watching absolute garbage in comparison we're getting 3/4 k more and the away followings would have been considerably more in the Championship.

Triple Assault season, great season, great goals, great performances but typical United, didn't grasp the big opportunities when they were for the taking.

An incredibly enjoyable season where we genuinely thought we could win every game, even if we went 2-0 down.

That team seemed to have real character and backbone as well, not like the current lot. Everyone seemed to chip in with goals and we had some really unpredictable players in the team like Kabba and Kenny and limited players used to their full potential from the bench like Pesch and Cheiiiiifffff.

Also produced a couple of the greatest moments at the lane in recent times with Jag's screamer against Leeds and the incredible game against Forest.

If ever I went into a play off final expecting us to win, it was that one.

What a season!

Me too Pete. I was that convinced we'd win I drove from London to Sheffield to go down on a coach with my mates so I could celebrate with them.

I'd like to point out that the 3-0 tonking we had in the play-off final was my 18th Birthday present :(

You're not fucking wrong mate that was a great season. I did nearly every game as it was pre Mrs B. To counter balance that though as I recall we started quite slow (lost at Coventry drew at home to Walsall?). And there was 'slight ' discontent - I think when it changed for me was going to Wolves and finding out we'd drawn Leeds and we did Wolves 3-1 and never looked back funnily enough top 2 was never in reach, a bit like last 2 seasons ;-) but it felt like a promotion season - we never gave up and the Forest Leeds games will live long in the memory - not forgetting the Pig game at the lane and even the glorious night we did the scousers! Why oh why did that twat mooney take the free kick at Anfield.

That season I maxed out 2 credit cards put any form of serious relationships on old and it's just a pity that my "piss up season" resulted in failure - The Bladesway ...

Yes that team certainly played some quality football to say they were labeled as a long ball squad of hoof merchants, not that the crackpot tippy tappy pass it sideways clappers will ever acknowledge the fact. Just to think a young version of our best player Sharp would get nowhere near selection for that team.

It's a shame ruined it for himself by flirting with Portsmouth during the season and almost derailing our bid to go up, never mind his end of seasons tactics in the Premier League which relegated us.

Well he wasn't a Premier League manager that has now been proved a number of times, he would however have got us straight back up the following season.

Before anyone starts I am not campaigning for him to come back or anything his day is now over.

Yeah I agree, he would have faired much better once we were relegated.
But saying that, most people would have been better than Robson!

Great season. Another good game was the Leicester at home, Asaba won it in the 90th minute.

Murphy & Page at the back were a class act. I don't think you can pick a name out of that team who didn't deserve credit. Class everywhere.
