I know there's a few stattos and nerds on here, maybe they can help me.

I am trying to find the line up from when we beat Arsenal 5-0 at the Lane in 73/74, which I believe is the game where TC sat on the ball.

Anyone know anything?

I thought the gooners beat us 5-0 at theirs and we beat them 5-1 at the Lane?

TC sitting on the ball to return the compliment to that t**t Alan Ball
Out of interest, what did Alan Ball say or do that was twattish?

They beat us 5-0 at the Lane on 29/1/72 and we beat them 5-0 there on 4/9/73.

The home game in between these two saw Alan Ball get sent off in one of the great moments of the season.

Pretty sure they'd signed Jeff Blockley for some sort of record sum and Billy D beat him to a front post header early on and we won 1-0. Currie and Hockey tormented "Bally" all game (probably because of the ball sitting incident in the previous encounter) and he eventually got sent off (and in those days this was a very rare occurrence) for chopping Hockey to the deck. What a reception he got walking to the tunnel (on the terrace side in those days). God, if only we could go back . . . . . .

Good memory - 7th October 1972. We didn't win after that for over 2 months and slipped into the relegation mix....

I'm guessing there's no footage of TC doing that? I'd love to see it.

Everyone in the ground was clapping and cheering as he walked towards the tunnel. He sarcastically applauded back which made everyone cheer and clap even more. Great days when we could turn anyone over. If only.....

" a quality situation, from a quality player"

I think from memory, there was a total ground rendition of "Tony, Tony, Currie" that literally echoed all round the ground.

A truly magical moment from a magical player.

Photo of the goal I posted in "Down Memory Lane" a few weeks ago

I always tell the story that when Alan ball sat on the ball it was around the half way line, towards

the tunnel and that when TC sat on the ball it was close to our goal line, cannot remember if it

was exactly like that but it is how I remember it.

"We were leading 4-0," Currie recalled, "so it was just my chance to get my own back. The thing is he did it on the halfway line and I did it in our box. When I got up , I tripped over the ball and they almost scored from it !" from The Matador.

"I was a ball-boy the day United beat Arsenal 5-0 and Tony Currie sat on the ball to tease Alan Ball (Ball had done similar at Highbury when Arsenal had run United ragged by a similar scoreline). Another incident I remember was Currie on the ball and he beckoned Alan Ball towards him. Alan ran at him and TC nutmegged him." Steve Thompson

I was there, my memory was TC sat on the ball near our goal line, taking the mick in more

ways than one! Then again the old memory isnt what it was.

He said we were a glorified third division club. Alan Ball is a little twat.

Of course, these days we are a glorified third division club.
Alan Ball was one of the nicest people I ever had the pleasure to meet ,at a pub in Titchfield after a barbecue at Steve Claridges house of all things. He sat and talked football for ages ,even though me (a Blade) and my mate Claridges cousin (a pompey fan) wanted him to be a twat he was very from it. To meet a world cup winner other than Peters was a great honour for me ,but he could have been just a local in a pub ,although his voice was annoying :) For the record neither he or my mate could stand Claridge (his house is called Wembley Heights) ,utter wanker.

Sadly, no. I would have loved to see the footage as I was over 160 miles away from BDTBL that night
I was there and anyone else who was there would ever understand how the board could have sold Currie, although it is is good to see that the successive boards have learnt from history. Oh hang on a minute:(

After that performance, TC would today have moved into the £40m bracket.

Well said.

There wasn't a Unitedite there who didn't think they were looking at far and away the best player in the country, head and shoulders above his so-called rivals.

What nobody has pointed out is the start we made to the game. Denis Clarebrough's book says simply: "United scored four goals in the opening seventeen minutes with the first in thirty five seconds. Currie in devastating form, sat on the ball near the end, completing United's revenge for the January 1972 defeat."

One of Currie's two goals I recollect as being absolutely smashed home from outside the box at the Bramall Lane end. To be fair to Bob Wilson, he made a lovely diving shape through the air as the ball whistled past.

Brilliant night.

Sold for £250,000. To Leeds. Couldn't be much worse.

“A lot of people criticised me for going at the time. They thought I’d walked out on the club,” he said. “But what they didn’t know was, not long before, I’d been happy to sign my career away for Sheffield United.

“Manchester United had been on the phone to me all the time. They’d been ringing me up saying ‘Come and play for us. We want you to replace Bobby Charlton’.

“Those who did know thought I was mad but I turned them down and signed a new deal because I didn’t want to leave. I loved Sheffield United, still do in fact, and I didn’t want to turn my back on the fans who showed me so much respect and love."

I was at the game with my dad. At half-time he came to see me and said something like "Make sure you remember every minute of this because that was the one of the finest performances I've ever seen a player give." Currie was probably at the peak of his game at that time and we don't realise how lucky we were.
