I'd like to go the Walsall game on the train.

What's the best way to get the best value tickets? Booking very early for instance.

I think this cropped up in another thread and someone said they booked months(?) in advance for away games, and got good prices.

I know to look online or phone up but my understanding and experience is that unless you already know the price, times, and t+c, you'll be sold a more expensive ticket than you need.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

:-)

trainsplit.com is gold for this sort of thing. Reckons that splitting the ticket at Derby (I assume you're travelling from Sheffield) will cut it down under 28 quid to buy on the day.

Thanks. Never heard of it. Will take a look when I get in.

Get a Derbyshire Wayfarer ticket for £12.30 this entitles you to travel from Sheffield to Burton on Trent. (Unlimited day travel)
You can stay on the same train to Birmingham New Street to change for Walsall.
Off peak day return for that leg is £12.10
Giving a total cost of bought on the day tickets to £24.40

Or borrow my Senior rail card and do it for £6.15 plus £8 . £14.15

Scottish heritage born in Yorkshire?

That £14.15 will be way too expensive then.

If you book well in advance, trainline.com can come up with good deals sometimes, when you book as single tickets and not return.

Thanks. This is all good, useful information.

I used trainsplit which got me to <£28 for a return.

Out of curiosity how did you get it this low? Is it local knowledge of Wayfarer tickets etc?

(I remember I used to do similar things when I lived in London, but you had to be aware of Travelcard zones etc and the only way realy to so that was to live there a while and become familiar with the system.)

I used http://www.travelsupermarket.com/c/train-tickets/tickets last year and got a great deal for a trip to London. Don't know if the prices you've been quoted above are singles or returns, but for a Sheffield to Walsall return on 21st Nov it's saying £20.30 each way, which sounds quite a lot to me.

Thanks again. I think without local knowledge trainsplit looks to be good on prices, and works out at £27.70 from memory when I checked last night.

But Davie Blade has outdone them and got it down to £24.40 return.

All welcome. I paid ~£42 when I went at shortish notice last season.

Yes, mate I've used the wayfarer tickets for ages now.
They have bumped up the price quite a lot over the years, but the senior concession (over 60s) at half price is brilliant value.
I got many of these bought in advance to avoid the price hikes, as they are date scratchcard tickets.
You just scratch the relevant date off So I wait until my ticket is actually checked, if you follow me!
Always make me smile as you can start in Staffordshire and finish in Yorkshire, on a Derbyshire Wayfarer.

There's also a Greater Manchester Wayfarer which covers places like, Grindleford, Buxton, Manchester Airport, Northwich, Warrington, Wigan, Bury,
They do group rates 2 adults and 2 kids up to 16 for £23.

With a bit of creativity just pay Shef to Grindleford then a GMW to Bury or Wigan, for far less than the normal fare.

I use them if I'm travelling further afield.
From Wigan/Warrington on the WCML you can get to Scotland for £13 with an advance ticket. Burton to Edinburgh £25!

It's no wonder people are confused if Grindleford is classed as Greater Manchester. It's about 40 miles from Manchester and 10 from Sheffield.
