Thought I'd share what I thought was an interesting article based on shots taken and faced per match so far this season, with analysis on attacking and defending effectiveness.

For those who can't be arsed to read the whole lot:

Shot Dominance

We just fall into the 'busy attack, busy defence' definition, with around 11 shots taken and faced on average each match to date.

Attacking Effectiveness

Only Bury have a lower number of shots taken per goal scored, which in part is impressive but begs the question as to how much better off we'd be if we created more chances. The tag of 'constant threat' seems a touch misleading when we only take a shot every 8 minutes or so.

Defensive Effectiveness

It's probably not that much of a surprise that we are labelled 'pushovers' on this one. But it wouldn't take that much of a change to rank alongside the better defensive teams in the division

Pointless statistics without considering quality of chances taken, there's a huge difference between, say, the one Sammon missed vs Blackpool and someone speculating from 35 yards because they heard someone in the Kop shout "shooooooooooot"

Interesting starting point but needs to be carefully interpreted.

Defensive frailties do not necessarily equate to frailties in the defence, but could mean midfield not doing that part if their job.

Two dimensions is so 18th century though. To be more representative you'd need a multi-dimensional space, that could get really interesting

Quite clearly not "pointless" considering the graphs correlate quite heavily with league positions.

I hate the way football is going. Number crunching, money ball bullshit. All these fucking experts with their Pro-Zone and we hear the same complaints from supporters of clubs all over the country; it's bred possession based, knock it across the back four, pass it from side to side, retain possession at all costs, no one making forward runs away from the ball, narrow no-winger tippy tappy fucking shit.

It's about time someone put together a side containing some grafters in midfield, some fast wingers who can cross a ball (if they exist anymore) and a big lad up front and played the English way. I'm bored to shitting death with this pseudo-continental 'tactical' arse. It's as dull as fuck and soon people will turn away from it like the Italians did, the PL bubble will burst spectacularly and there will be carnage as hundreds of American bankers leave the PL clubs in droves and fuck off back to Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan to find something else they can bleed to death.

Graphs and statistics aren't new. They're old, they must be, I did them at school. They were dull then and they still are.
And Douglas Adams is correct, in general terms, the older one gets the more resistant to change one becomes. But also old enough to know that something isn't automatically good just because it's new. Sinclair C5?

The graphs show that Adkins has not found the right players to select in the right formation as yet. Once he establishes a settled side and a settled way of playing we will move into different segments of the graph.

The graphs mostly demonstrate why the teams are where they are at this stage of the season. Whether each top current club can continue to play to it's strengths is the key. Suspensions, injuries, pressure being up there at the top, all take an effect.

I believe we can only improve now that Adkins has got his main man. Let's hope so and enjoy seeing the graphs by the year end.
