SOCCEROO David Carney finds himself in the middle of a tug of war between Sydney FC and English Championship club Sheffield United for his services.

Carney's team-mate in Sydney and the national side Mark Milligan is also a target for the Blades.

Sheffield United chairman Kevin McCabe yesterday said: "I expect Carney is on a plane winging to England.

"I would say he is one of the players we're interested in. While we've not signed him yet, he'd love Sheffield United.

"We are a great club, we are the world's oldest United and people forget that. Not Man United, but Sheffield United."

McCabe's enthusiasm for Carney, however, may be tempered by the stance of Sydney FC chief executive George Perry who said: "David is expected to report to training on Monday morning.

"There has been no formal offer from Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday or any other club that has come across my desk for Carney.

"As far as I am concerned David Carney is 27 days into a two-year contract, while Mark Milligan still has a year to run on his deal.

"But it is my understanding (of the immigration laws) as Milligan has no family ties to the UK he can't get a (British) passport, which would preclude him from obtaining a work visa."

Carney's Sydney-based agent Michael Crismale didn't return The Weekend Australian's phone calls. Milligan's agent Craig Nettlebeck, the former Sydney Swan, Melbourne Demons and Fremantle defender, is in Europe and could not be contacted.

McCabe, a wealthy realtor with extensive real estate interests in Australia, said: "I expect we can do business in Australia with some of your younger A-League players."

When pressed if this included the Sydney FC pair of Carney and Milligan, McCabe said: "You never know.

"We've had some terrific Australians at Sheffield United, such as Shaun Murphy, Doug Hodgson and Carl Veart. As I've blended property with football in the UK, I see no reason not to do it here in Australia as you are a great sporting nation.

"With our past contacts with those three players, I hope we can get a regular ****** of Australian talent."

Meanwhile, Sydney will give former Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder Michael Enfield and former Socceroo defender Tony Popovic their first runs with the club against the Central Coast at Canberra Stadium tomorrow.

Enfield has been signed to a two-year deal after impressing coach Branko Culina in training.

Popovic has been back in the country for just two weeks after an 11-year absence playing in Japan, England and the Middle East.

The vastly experienced 34- year-old left Sydney United in 1996 to join former national coach Eddie Thomson at J-League club Sanfrecce Hiroshima before linking with Crystal Palace in 2001, where he stayed until last year, when he joined the Al-Arabi club in Qatar.

Popovic, a defensive enforcer who made 58 appearances for the Socceroos and was a member of Australia's 2006 World Cup squad, reunites with Culina who was his coach at Sydney United.

Elsewhere, Adelaide United coach Aurelio Vidmar has completed his off-season buying spree with the signing of central defender Milan Susak.

The 23-year-old had been on trial with the Reds after a spell with the Vojvodina club in Serbia and impressed Vidmar enough to warrant offering the former Sydneysider a contract.

"I was reasonably pleased with what he had to offer in the two games he's played," Vidmar said.

Having signed Susak to a one-year deal, 22 of the 23 available spots available are now filled at Hindmarsh Stadium.

The final spot has been left vacant by Vidmar, who still has the option of signing another player when the transfer window next opens.

The cut-off date for all A-League squads to be finalised with the FFA is July 31.

Latest...but do we have a new Chairman?.........

DAVID CARNEY, the gifted Sydney FC utility with a thunderous left foot, has been granted permission to begin talks with Sheffield United with the view of rekindling his dream of playing professionally in Britain.

Carney, from Campbelltown in Sydney's southwest, will today fly to the Blades' complex at Bramall Lane, for talks with United's new management team of Bryan Robson and Brian Kidd.

The breakthrough in the stalemate which threatened to scupper Carney's bid for another crack at European football, came after Sheffield United company chairman and property developer Kevin McBride, who is in Australia on business, spoke to Sydney FC officials at the weekend.

But Sydney FC remains furious at defender Mark Milligan for breaking protocol in flying to Metz in France for talks without a clearance from either the club or the A-League.

"While we've given Carney permission to fly to England for talks with the Sheffield United management after having received a formal request from the Blades, there's no such agreement in place for Milligan," Sydney FC chief executive George Perry said last night.

Perry said he learned of Milligan's moves via an email from his manager Craig Nettlebeck.

"Let's have no misunderstanding here, Milligan has gone over there (to France) without the club's permission and knowing full well he's still a Sydney FC contracted player," Perry said.

Milligan is regarded as one of the best young defenders in the A-League and had been linked to a possible move to Sheffield United.

Carney previously spent six seasons at both English and Scottish clubs before returning to play a pivotal role in helping Sydney FC win the inaugural A-League premiership.

The talented left-sided midfielder initially spent three seasons at Everton.

Both Carney and Milligan were sorely missed in yesterday's A-League Cup match in Canberra, where a revitalised Central Coast Mariners cruised into the semi-finals with a 3-0 thrashing of the Sky Blues.

The moment I started reading that I wondered how long it would be before somebody United related had their name spelled wrong.

Let me leave for the Lane

DAVID Carney today pleaded with Sydney FC not to destroy his dream of joining Sheffield United.

The Socceroos midfielder player broke his silence after he was forced to do an about-turn at the city's airport yesterday.

Carney, once linked with the Owls, was set to board a flight bound for the UK when Sydney got tough over "terms of consent".

They want a cash offer before granting him permission to talk to United.

Carney, who has an extended two-year contract with Sydney, also claimed to be attracting interest from Wigan after unleashing his frustration.

"There are a number of English clubs who want to meet with me," Carney fumed.

"Like any other player, I am really keen to explore those options.

"It has been a bit frustrating the last couple of days. One minute I am going to England for talks, the next minute I am not.

"I'd really like the club to put themselves in my shoes. I don't believe they are doing that."

"I want the opportunity to go and at least see what they have got to offer.

"All I'm asking is a fair deal.

"The club have been great to me, so have the players, (Sydney coach) Branko (Culina) and the fans."

But club chief executive George Perry said that Sydney wouldn't change their stance until they received an offer for Carney.

And Culina poured cold water on United's suitability by insisting: "If David were to get a Premier League club, all well and good.

"But I don't think his style would suit Championship football."

Blades boss Bryan Robson will hope things run more smoothly when he attempts to persuade Everton striker James Beattie to become the club's record signing.

Robson, whose side travel to Rotherham for their latest pre-season friendly tonight, has lodged a £4 million bid for the 29-year-old but acknowledges that convincing Beattie to drop down a division at such a pivotal stage of career could prove a problem.

As well as offering to make him the highest paid and most expensive player in United's history, Robson has prepared a presentation for the former England international which highlights the transformation the Bramall Lane outfit has undergone in recent seasons.

Together with United chairman Terry Robinson, Robson has already opened talks with Beattie's advisors as he seeks to clarify the type of financial package it would take to soften the blow of Championship football.

Beattie, aged 29, is believed to earn around £40,000 a week at Goodison Park. Although United are unlikely to match that figure, money generated from the sales of Claude Davis and Phil Jagielka means Robson can still offer extremely attractive terms.

Looks like he really wants to join us.

Talks are back on.........

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australia midfielder David Carney has been cleared to fly to England this week to begin talks with second division side Sheffield United, Sydney FC said on Wednesday.

The Australian A-League club had rejected Carney's initial request to speak to the Yorkshire club but changed their mind once they received assurances that Sheffield United were serious about their offer.

"We always said we wouldn't stand in David's way of going overseas if we received a genuine offer that was in everyone's best interests," Sydney chief executive George Perry said in a statement.

A Sydney FC fan here awaiting the confirmation of the Carneys move. Carney will be missed by Sydney FC. When on form he can be a defenders nightmare. He has a great touch and good vision.
I think he'll need a few hours in the gym though, not because he is unfit, he was one of the sharpest Aussies on the pitch in the recent Asian Cup. I just think the pace and strength required in the championship will be a little tough for him.

Be interested how he goes

Good Luck in the coming season

Welcome to the forum and thanks for the information on Carney.

It's always a task when changing leagues...let's hope he can do it.

Another SFC fan here... A few points:

*You can expect to have paid anywhere from 150,000-400,000 pounds for David Carney. A good fee for mine given the present British market.

*He's an out-and-out winger. Real old school in the way he hugs the touchline. Has the capacity to hug the line all day when needed - positioning in that sense is solid.

*He's *very* left-footed. Jokes about the non-existence of Dave Carney's right foot are in abundance. That said, it's a very classy left foot.

*Prefers to play on the left-wing but gained fame at SFC through playing on the right (either in a 4-4-2 or up front/out wide in a 4-3-3 later). He will literally hug the touch line and wait for the ball, then dribble past his fullback and anyone he feels like. His direct style of running at a player and taking them on is extremely entertaining, very old-fashioned in a way. His confidence never drops - he'll take his man on all day long.

*More often than not for us was a real attacking threat. A key player in the SFC side going forward. Due to cutting in from the right he got a few shots on target. Has 8 goals/9 assists in 38 games (34 starts) at SFC.

*That said in his latter days he started tracking back a lot more. He recently played (and impressed) for Australia in a left wing-back role (Australia play with a back three), and is expected to keep it. He'll line up in midfield for you but should still be able to track back well. Experience growing up in England w/ Everton means the English game will be no worries.

*He's got a huge belief in his own ability. Has never hidden his desire to go back overseas after resurrecting his career at SFC and now has his chance. If he's good enough (and I believe he well could be at CCC level), he'll do it. Won't fail through lack of trying.

*Don't let his past list of clubs fool you. Caught in a rut after leaving Everton, he's certainly above the likes of Hamilton. The A-League is the rough equivalent of good League One/bad CCC sides, and Dave is one of the League's top 5-10 players. In the near future you will see the cream of the A-League go in to Europe's top tier (i.e. Michael Beauchamp now at Nurnberg winning the German Cup).

*Turned down Plymouth and Wednesday to head your way. That's a fact. Also rumoured interest from Wigan and Reading.

Carney joins the Blades

SOCCEROO David Carney flew out of Sydney last night to join English Championship side Sheffield United.

He has agreed to a three-year deal with the Blades, whi were controversially relegated from the Premier League last season and are favoured to make a quick return.

Before boarding his flight, Carney said: "There was interest from Premier League clubs but the big reason that I chose Sheffield United is that the club is ambitious and Bryan Robson (manager) has shown faith in my ability.

"He followed my performances at the Asian Cup. He prefers me as a creative player rather than as a defender."

Socceroos coach Graham Arnold used Carney in Scott Chipperfield's left wingback role in the Asian Cup matches against Thailand and Japan.

Sydney-born Carney was only 16 when he first left Australia to play youth team football with Everton - a team that also included Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

"We became very good friends," Carney said.

Two years ago Carney came back to Sydney for a trial with Sydney FC and Pierre Littbarski, the club's first coach, liked what he saw of the player's dribbling skills and willingness to take on players.

Carney was an instant hit with the Sydney fans and played an enormous part in the club's maiden championship success.

Sydney stopped him from going to England on Monday - he actually did a turnabout at Sydney airport - until an offer came from one of the English clubs.

Perry said yesterday: "We always said we wouldn't stand in David's way of going overseas if we received a genuine offer that was in everyone's best interests."

But it is understood there was a clause in Carney's contract that had a cap on any transfer fee.

"It's sad to leave Branko (Culina)," Carney said.

"He's a great coach but I am lucky to be going to another great coach and a football legend in Bryan Robson.

"I also want to thank the Sydney fans for their support. I will never forget them."

Culina was last night scratching his head on how a player of Carney's calibre could be replaced.

"Just another hiccup," he said. "But how do you replace an international from the local market? Who falls into that category?

"I have started looking at DVDs from far and wide.

"The problem we have is that that player has to fit into the cap with the salary Carney was on."

With the start of the A-League competition just three weeks away, Culina still doesn't know whether another Socceroo, defender Mark Milligan, is staying with the club.

Milligan took off to French club Metz last week for trials and is due back home today.

Chief executive Perry said the club held no grudge against Milligan and was looking forward to his return from Europe

Excellent news to be honest, finally a real left winger.

brilliant news. cant wait to see him

another member of the team in the right area of the park
