On paper, I think Wigan have the strongest squad.
I think ours is similar to Coventry in having a couple that look very good for this level (theirs being the likes of Ricketts and Armstrong) but lacking some depths in certain areas.
What I do think we have though is the best proven manager (I do like Edinborough, Smith, Hill, Cooper and Hasselbaink though).
I don’t think anyone is saying the squad we have can’t go up. I just think people feel let down that we have missed an opportunity to improve our squad and further enhance our chances after having expectations raised with comments from Phipps and Adkins about the Murphy money being reinvested, the last 2 days of the window being key etc.
We’re not behind the scenes to see why it hasn’t happened so people will draw their own conclusions/ guesses. Some are willing to give the club the benefit of the doubt whilst others are more cynical.
I’m disappointed and frustrated that we’ve missed out on our targets and I genuinely don’t know how to feel about the board. They frustrate me at times but they have impressed me at other times like signing Brayford, appointing Adkins etc.
I think a common failing though has been their apparent inability to manage and then live up to expectations.
“Prem in 3 or 5 years” (depending who you listen to)
“Think Liverpool”
“No need to sell” (followed by annual sale of best player)
“We can’t make selling clubs sell” (but buying clubs can make us sell?)
“Money will be reinvested” (followed by failure to bring anyone in before deadline)
All that’s just since the new regime without getting into “Beattie-flu”, “supporters don’t know what to look for in a manager” (from the man who appointed Bryan fucking Robson!) etc.
I think Jim does a lot of good work on social media and it’s a great link between club and supporters but at the same time, we still seem to score a fair few own goals on the PR front.
