...of sorts. There was no team sheets and so I do not know any names of players really (sorry long gone from days when I used to watch Jags, Monty, Tongey etc when we played at Abbeydale and I knew who a lot of the players were!) Seem to be a bit out of the loop.

I popped up to the Academy at Shirecliffe as had a few days off work.

Under 16's and Under 18's both played against Wednesday counterparts.

Nigel Adkins was there watching on as was a few others such as Glenn Roeder, Simon Tracey, Mark Todd, Matt Duke (now goalkeeping coach in the Academy), Nicky Weaver (Weds keeping coach) and David Hirst (Weds under 16 coach). Decent crowd in attendance. I also heard a scout on the phone to someone saying he was happy with their checks and they would be hoping to complete the deal for Ryan Woods from Shrewsbury as they had seen him 15 times nows (he was a scouser but not sure of club- might have been Wigan from things he was saying; it was not us I do not think so look out for that deal!). Also said they were watching Bradshaw again at the weekend. As I say unsure who he represented.

I did not watch much of the under 16 game but United led 1-0 at half time but lost 2-1. It was a close game but the winner from Weds was a great run and strike. Could have gone either way from bits I saw.

I did watch most of the under 18 game. On the Wednesday website there is a ridiculously biased report that says dominant Owls miss out. It mentions every one of the about 3 chances they had in the first half and miss the umpteen chances United had. United really ought to have been 4 or 5-0 up at half time kicking down the slope. They dallied too much in front of goal and took too long when they got in really good positions Finally the goal came when a stone wall penalty was awarded after an excellent run from the United midfielder. The penalty was converted very well to give United the least they deserved.

Second half was a different story as Wednesday were much the better side. They had a number of corners and eventually scored when the United left back who had been very good going forward let the winger who sidefooted home one on one. Wednesday then looked the more likely winner but United came again and right at the death they scored a winner.

In terms of play there was not much in the game overall. Both teams tried to get it down and play when they could although Weds did got a bit too long at times much to their undoing to the tall George Hirst (brother of David). Hirst Jnr is about 6'4 (at 16 or 17 I think) and is very gangly Looks nothing like his rotund Dad on the touchline. To be honest he was quite poor but only one game/early days. the tall black lad at centre back had him under control all game for United - he was decent whoever he was!

His name might have been Adebowale but could be wrong. For Weds the right winger was tricky and caused problems and they had a lad on the left too (think someone said they had signed him from Arsenal he looked ok).

They (Weds) also had a giant blond centre back who was nearly as tall as Hirst Jr but he looked similarly clumsy. Shows being a big un might work at the very young groups but eventually skill and athleticism tends to take over and those players are the ones that often stand out more over someone who is just tall but does not have the same ability.

For United I think we had Jordan Slew’s brother, Jorome up front. He is quite small if that is who it is but he did not really get in the game.

The keeper Ramsdale looked a bit shaky and kept missing crosses. The two midfielders were neat and tidy. Think one was an Irish lad called Gordon. Someone near me said United had mostly first years where as Weds had a lot of second years. Still with so many youngsters (Reed, Calvert Lewin) now in the first team reckoning means many of the under 18’s will then play for the u21’s as seems to be happening.

Suppose any win against the old enemy is a win and the last minute goal was celebrated wildly by the players but it was quite an enjoyable game on the whole and fairly even (as I say the report on swfc.co.uk is ridiculous). I used to like going up to Abbeydale and latterly Shirecliffe but annoying I don’t know many of the players (partly my fault being out of touch with academy players coming though and partly due to them not listing the teams anywhere pre match).

I know two of Wendy players. Warren Clarke (probably played CM) who got subbed after 73 mins and Jake Nicholson (came on as sub after 89 mins). Both played in same primary and secondary school teams as my son also for AFC Dronfield u8s and u9s

Almost the first thing WHF Jr Sr ever said about football was Harvey Gilmour is the best player in school. He was at Abbey Lane at the time and probably 8 or 9 years old. This was a consistent message.

Then he went to Sir Harold Jackson (a great school btw - now known as Bradway) where he played in the same team as Callum Semple. I watched them a few times and it was crystal clear, even at 9 or 10, how good he was relative to some of his peers. Callum scored for the u18s the other day.

It's really striking that these players have been consistently two of the best from a very early age.

Thanks Deadbat, I really enjoyed that report, your vagueness made it quite funny reading - I'm glad you soldiered on while not quite in control of the 'facts'! KUTGW

Saw Harvey score a good goal from a FK in the u18s match against QPR last season. He was in Y11 at Meadowhead at the time . He will have been 15 years old then

They were also part of the Meadowhead school team which was unbeaten for a couple of years I believe (they were definitely deemed the best ever Meadowhead school team). Funnily enough as soon as they left the school team along with a couple of others, the team began a bit of a decline.

Yup. No idea of any of the players at all. I could say the blond lad did well or the little lad on the right but nope no clue of any of the names!!! We won anyway.

Right hang on, Foulkesie I was all over the place trying to fit some chronology to your piece..... you are referring to your lad and his contemporaries and Sir Harold Jackson School changed its name about 6 or 7 years ago is that it?

Its just that what with your avatar and Harvey Gilmour sounding to me like someone born in the 1930s, Sir Harold Jackson sounding like an old school near us (Percy Jackson) that changed its name in the late 60s/early 70s as far as I know - I thought you were talking about the first thing your Dad told you about football.......WHF Jr Sr leaves both options doesn't it, or is just it me, after a long hard day and a bottle of beer?

Yes Abbey Lane and Bradway - who also had other United academy players I think - were the two best primary schools teams in the city. They played each other in the final of a citywide competition in Y6 which pretty much every school entered. (Mosborough I think were close.) Bradway won 3-1 at H***********.

Then...all the players in that final ended up going to the same secondary and being in the same team.

They were unbeatable locally, but nationally used to come up against a Manchester team with United and City academy players I think and get knocked out in a quarter final, though I'm less sure about that.

Are you sure it's just the one bottle?

The SHJ Y6 team played in 2009-10. I think the school changed its name that year or maybe the start of 10-11.

WHF Jr Sr is what Charlie Chan might refer to as Number One Son. (WHF Jr Jr would be Number 2 Son.)

Was the school really called Percy Jackson? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percy_Jackson_&_the_Olympians

Warren is a lovely lad who has worked incredibly hard to get this far, I've known him since he was a baby! Never seen him play so don't know what his chances are of making it, but I'd love him too, even if it is for Weds! He's not had it easy so far in his young life, he deserves it. FYI United did have the chance to sign him up at one point.

is that junior senior thing normal? - its a new one on me anyway thanks for the translation.

Its half a bottle actually but I'm pissed (USA meaning) about a job which has left me quite discombobulated!

Yes, Percy Jackson Grammar was the old name of Adwick School which is now probably called something aspirational like North Doncaster Cannon Fodder Academy, my Dad was headboy when the only aspiration the lads could hope for was to dot your Is, cross your Ts and try to figure out how to put the semi-colon in the right place.

I lived next door to his grandparents, his late mum and his uncle from 1967 to 1978! Warren has a very good engine and stood out for the school teams. He went to Chesterfield when he was 9 and moved to Wendy a few years later. When I last saw his grandad last year he said he is happy with Warren's progress. I think he will get a pro contract next spring as he has been making sub appearances for the u21s this month. I found out a few minutes ago from twitter that Warren got stretchered off at the u18s match today. Hope it is nothing serious

Percy Jackson Grammar was the old name of Adwick School

Well there you go. I worked at Adwick very briefly around 2000. Catchment had been redrawn and some of the staff had found the new intake, er, challenging.

I remember walking past one classroom: the kids had cleared a space, turned two tables on their sides, put one at either end and were using them as good-sized five-a-side nets in a game of football. A creative use of resources if ever I saw one.

Later that year the Superhead expelled or excluded 30+ kids on one day - and then left about a week later.

Yeah he was down for some time and they had to get the cart on to put him on a stretcher and get him taken away but did not see an ambulance or anything after this. There were a few tackles flying in. Both sides certainly wanted to win. As I say United seemed to have a lot of the younger players from visual appearances and be interesting to see average age of two sides. Bodes well for the future if so.

Oh dear hope he's OK. Small world then - I used to live on the same road as his him, his brother and grandparents! But it will be after they moved so not the same road as you. I still see them often so will hear all about it, fingers crossed it wasn't too serious.
