Nah, not this Saturday's game. It was my 60th last week and one of my friends tried to get a programme from around the time I was born. She kindly got me (off ebay) the United v Blackpool prog. from 22nd Oct. 1955.

Some intersting stuff, including the train to a match at Huddersfield - 3/9!

3/9 to buy the ticket or 3/9 it would get you there?

Takes me back graf, and although a decade later, I remember 7" vinyl singles costing 3/6 - that's three shilling and six old pence. As soon as I had money in the palm of my hand it slipped through in exchange for a single. One of life's highlights for myself, it was a time when there was such an outpouring of musical creativity that I, along with many others, couldn't resist collecting singles. B sides were just as important, but there, I've digressed, apologies.

Violet May's, itsinyer? Absolutely no need to apologise for digressing. Memories. It's all I've got left. :D

Wow - the programme style brings back some memories.

Happy belated birthday! :)

A leisurely stroll down the Wicker in the morning, ten pints,Depart from Attercliffe Road at 12.54. Sorted!
10 pints in circa 2 hours that's going some !! as I recall pubs didn't open until 1030 back in the day plus must be at least a 15 minute walk (or stagger) from Wicker to Attercliffe Road Station.

I struggled a bit on the quiz. Sample question: "What distinction do Northampton Town have?" Answer: "The only team to win four away games".

Also... in the same way that one finds it very hard to imagine that things actually happened in colour before the 1960s, I find it quite amusing that they have a 'memory corner' section for nostalgia. Didn't they realise that they were the olden days? ;)

Is it just me that finds it weird that they could have had a "30 years ago..... we beat Cardiff in the 1925 FA Cup Final" which is like us having one now that would be something like "30 years ago.... we beat Barnsley 3-1 with Keith Edwards (2) and Peter Withe scoring" - which I remember like it was yesterday.

I know the exact dates are not right but you get the gist.

I'm 65 next week, which means that I've been following the Blades for 57 years.

When I fall off my perch, I'm donating my brain to medical science

My addiction to music began in the very early '60s graf, when of course there was only vinyl (tapes don't count). I lived in Fulham throughout the '60s, travelling until I ended up in downtown Sheffield, kind of predictable really. When I arrived in Sheffield I recall Violet Mays, along with Record Collector (still here I believe). RC was especially good for soul and black american stuff, so I used to spend afternoons there listening and buying. Now it's cds, which my younger friends regard as an aberration of dinosaur proportions, but I don't care, it really is all about the music :)

My first job was working at GT News (formerly Hodges) at Crosspool in 1985, which I know makes me a bit of a youngster but record collecting is record collecting at any age, and every Friday when I got paid I'd be straight down to Record Collector in Broomhill where I would hand over my hard-earned wages in exchange for Italian Progressive Rock albums - PFM, Banco, Le Orme, Acqua Fragile...

Barry the proprietor saw it as a rare opportunity to get rid of his Italian Prog Stock which was filed away in his upstairs room. One day he even let me loose on my own up there, and £100 later...

Interesting read Greenwich, when you're that age I think music can be a bit tribal - I loved (still do) soul, r'n'b, blues, gospel, so I was in this black music bubble along with other black music fans. I used to visit Northern Soul clubs each weekend, sometimes visiting an all-nighter on a Friday night, followed by the same on a Saturday, then an all-dayer on a Sunday, but at that age my batteries could weather the demands I made on myself - and I did it all without a single upper!

As I'm now a lot older my tastes are far broader, so I seek just about anything. The difference being music that I find soulful as opposed to just soul music.

I met Barry a few times, good little shop that epitomises what a music shop should be.

10 pints would also make the train journey go either very quick (kip), or very slow (need a pee)

I'll listen to owt, and more importantly (especially in my younger days) I'd play owt as a gig was a gig whatever the genre. Even as a youngster just starting out in the professional world I recognised that music is music (then again Greenwich Blade 'Banco' ) and there was always something to be found whether it was playing for Turandot at Opera North, a new work with David Bedford, a reggae gig with Freddie McGregor (what a night that was), doing a 40s night with the Tom Daugherty Orchestra, a full on brass band competition with Black Dyke or a smoky night with a jazz combo I found enjoyment in the lot.

Interestingly my listening has always been similar. Eclectic is a perfect description.

Can't believe nobody ha s mentioned Rare and Racy yet. Spent many a happy hour in there in my late teens buying and selling.

Was the Freddie MacGregor night at the University? Mid to late 80s?

Happy Birthday mate, hope you had a good one, I'll tell Liz.

The beauty of CD"s is that for less than four quid you can get 30 Northern Soul tracks from Amazon, bought one last week for 3.57 with free delivery!

Violet May's was also very good for Blues and Soul particularly when it was located at the bottom of Duke St prior to her moving just behind The Moor. I always remember saying her saying to us as very young teenagers whilst we were rummaging through the Soul/Blues section "you won't like that stuff it's all blackies" whilst smoking her 50th fag of the day. Never tried to explain thats's why we were looking there:)

I know sometimes there's a pointed exchange between those who prefer vinyl to cd's, but perhaps I just can't be bothered and I'm just happy to listen to decent music regardless of which format it came in. Yes, I too tend to use Amazon for what it offers, especially the used music as this can be almost as good as something that's brand spanking new. Not a month passes without me receiving new music, from all genre's to stuff I'd call predictable.
