Classic Pre-Season Rumours

Anyone remember any of the classic rumours we've had to endure over the pre-season period? Admittedly it's my favourite part as the usual optimistic completely un-realistic names get banded about and then we eventually sign someone who is of a lesser ability. Any way here are my favourites from the last few seasons:

Kinkladze

Yes the very same who the season before had signed for Ajax for 5 million pounds. I was a big fan and was younger and naive and generally believed this would happen. I then remember him being interviewed on soccer am and being asked by Lovejoy as to whether he was signing for us, to which he replied, "who again?". I think it was a last ditch attempt to prove we weren't in financial free-fall after selling Marcelo and Lee Morris the week previous.

Bresciano

Australian play-maker who played in the Italian league for years, Blackwell wanted to make him our £4m joint record signing from Palermo. Never going to happen as Blackwell had never heard of him when asked about the possibility of him signing.

Gascoigne

Howard Kendall I think legit wanted to sign him. Probably would've killed him if he did sign and Kendall stayed.

I remember some ex Brazilian international being rumoured early in Robson's reign, was it Ze Maria? Used to play for Inter.

A lazy journalist read a part of it, thought it was real and published it in the Star. Idiots.
