I wonder if today was an indication that McEveley will become the club captain for this season? He's been captain in more or less all pre-season games and Adkins said he won't name the captain until this week.

Surely this means McEveley will be captain.

It would seem so, unless he brings in his captain this week.. Someone like Harlee Dean (which probably won't happen)

F**king hope not.
If Adkins deems him the best leader at the club why not? He will obviously be selected for the first game so are you saying Adkins shouldn't select his best leader as captain ?

It's as clear as it can be that McEveley is going to be captain, for now, for the reasons given. I'd add to that that Adkins singled him out as a model professional at the Evening With.

He got a lot of grief last season and I think this was unfair: he undoubtedly made mistakes but he was played out of position and ended up being not that great at a job that wasn't really his.

So far this season he's looked much better especially alongside Collins. They're not world class, but we are a Division 3 team.

But he still is being played out of position in that job that's not really his.

Really wish him well & hope he can improve greatly on his standards from the latter part of last season, but still find it worrying. Best of all worlds is that we get another bloody specialist centre-half in though!

Pretty sure too that they never played a game last season as a central defensive partnership – McEveley had been used at left back from the point he signed to the point Collins was frozen out. So we're in new territory here – we can't attach this pairing to last year's defensive failure, as they never had the opportunity to work together as one. It sounds like both are part of Adkins's "leadership group" that he's mentioned a few times.

No i'm saying he shouldn't select a player that's not good enough for us into the starting eleven never mind as captain.
And if Adkins thinks he is good enough ? Who is better than McEverley who is in the current squad and is fit ? If McEverley shows the form he did when he first went to centre half last season he is more than capable until we get someone better in. My concern is Collins as he always appears to have a bad mistake in him that costs us a goal(like today)

the clip missed the two seconds beforehand where Collins played it straight to the midfielder
If you lose the ball up the pitch when the player still has a lot to do you can hardly blame Collins fully, they still had a lot to do and what I want to know is what was our left back doing? Can't remember who it was but his positional sense was diabolical.

I disagree. Now he's lost his pace he simply has to play at centre half, and he's adapted his game accordingly.

He might not be the best and I do think we need to improve on him and Collins, but there are far worse options too. With the attacking prowess we have now I'm happy to go for a 4-3 every game!

he passed the ball from the edge of our area straight to their midfielder who set up the goal...he was not 'up the pitch'.

If Mr McEverley can reproduce anywhere near the type of performances he showed against QPR in the cup last year, then we should have nothing to worry about. I remember watching him very closely that game and he was immense at the back and showed great leadership qualities, I think he partnered young Kennedy that day.

Wow a defender misplaced a pass which unfortunately ended up costing us. Let's terminate his contract.

The pass from their midfielder should have not made it to it's intended target but somehow it did because we didn't defend it right. Our left back got himself into a right pickle and should have done better, Collins' pass should have been better but what happened after that wasn't his fault, they still had a lot to do.

I hope not, I would honestly put him down as one of our worst players to have the armband.

Mceverly might be the best of a bad bunch for captain - doesn't' suddenly make him a decent centre half.

There is one piece of a jigsaw that will stop us getting top 2 - a Centre half, ideally 2.

If we can only afford 1 x CH then FFS replace McEv, before it is too late - he is a left back.

Both Collins and Mcfadzean have to take some of the blame, but the cross is terrific as is the finish.

Collins and Mceverley both have drawbacks to their game and if we can find a real top class centre back then we should sign them. On a positive note I think these two have qualities that cover for each others drawbacks.

It was a little clip over the top and their player had time to bring it down with his head, that says all you need to know for me, i do agree it was a decent finish but it was made way too easy for him in all fairness.

Collins with a good solid signing next to him will be decent in this league although I'd obviously prefer better than decent for the respective league, lets either hope Adkins has his plans in stall or lets hope we score enough to not worry about how many we concede

We need 11 captains on the field . McEveley as captain , for tossing the coin perhaps before kick off , to determine which way , we are going to play in the first half , if he wins the toss.

We do need someone who is respected by players / fans and takes responsibility , and has authority .

Still something that needs sorting IMO.

Absolutely. One of Adkins's responses to this has been to say that leadership is a dying breed in the game. I'd say that's been particularly the case at this club. I've said it before, but I don't think it's a complete coincidence that the season the squad was littered with leaders, we were promoted. Morgs, Jags, Monty, Short, Unsworth, even Lucketti and Flitcroft to a very minor extent – all players that could comfortably pick up the armband, but collectively I think they helped keep that squad mentally strong. We had plenty of games where we had to lift ourselves after suffering a blow, plus a chasing pack for 2nd, and leadership in the squad was in my view a vitally important part of our success that season.

If captains were selected based on football rather than leadership skills there would be some pretty awful captains out there.

Club captains should be a role model, professional, dedicated, hard working, prepared to bleed for the cause.

I'm not McEveley's biggest fan when judged as a centre half, but I cant grumble at his attitude etc.

As a club who has pretty much been founded on a workman like ethos I would have thought we'd have a lot more tolerance to the likes of the Montys and McEveleys of the world.

The question of captaincy, whilst having an obvious importance, shouldn't cloud the fact that all teams need captains all over the place.

Give me a commanding voice, someone who's respected, in any position, and perhaps that will compound the messages that come from the guy wearing the captain's armband.
