Last night in "Meet the manager" I asked NA whether he was satisfied that this season's budget was sufficient to achieve promotion or whether FFP restricted us.

He gave a generally positive, careful and diplomatic answer in which he expressed satisfaction with the budget but said clubs have to be realistic and sensible with funding. The surprise to me was when he said that in his opinion 6 or 7 clubs in our division likely had a better budget than us but he refused to name them.

To be honest I am disappointed and surprised if we are not in the top 3. NA didn't mention FFP being a restricting factor.

I suppose the club spent a fortune last January and then another fortune when Clough and six others were paid off.

He will very quickly learn that that sort of remark isn't going to cut any ice at this club with it in this position. I would be pretty shocked if he made a remark like that again.

On the other hand it's inconceivable that it could be true. Who is he even thinking of? Wigan, Millwall (at a stretch), possibly Coventry?

It doesn't really matter since he wouldn't have taken us on if he didn't think he had the budget necessary to do the job. How he spends it is another matter, of course.

I guess Wigan were right when they said they had by far the biggest budget in the League. I wonder who other than them could possibly have more money than us. Swindon? Bradford? Chesterfield? Milwall? Fleetwood?
I'm a little less sure of storming the league now :/

It is possible that the budget has been reduced.

Look at when a Weir was in charge. We set our budget as if we were Yeovil.

Did you not hear the bit where he corrected himself?

Look at when a Weir was in charge. We set our budget as if we were Yeovil.

I think it was clear from the start that Weir was going to operate under constraints, and even then we did shell out for Baxter, Cuvelier and Lyle Taylor. Add to that the higher division loanees that Weir brought in.

Concerted budgetary rug-pulling happened ritually to every other manager between Porterfield and latter-day Warnock, however.

Did you not hear the bit where he corrected himself?

I heard the bit when he further discussed it and said he was guessing, rather than having definite information but I wouldn't have called it a correction.. He said he wasn't prepared to list the clubs, but do bear in mind he had that number of clubs in his mind, it was not a random answer.

I think it is fair to talk about these things so that fans, media etc. can manage their expectations. I don't think a manager's performance should be judged amongst the highest budgets if it's not. However it is disappointing.

That was after McCabe publicly stated he was not subbing the club any more and Weir was appointed on a "club must pay it's own way" basis - mission impossible.

The prince changed the scenario but after January and the Clough army exits on top of other spending, it might have levelled off a bit.

Hardly going to say we have the best budget. Puts loads more pressure on him to succeed immediately.

That may be true, but attempting to portray us as underdogs is going to fool nobody. One of his predecessor's less appealing traits, and certainly not necessary at this level.

Phipps has already said HRH is subbing the club £13 million a year whilst we are in this league, just to stay afloat as a business.

Unfortunately for Adkins, Clough spunked the football budget on the 17 dwarves, one even has the beard.

So our turnover is greater than it was when we were relegated?

I think as supporters , perhaps we should lower our expectations a little , and hope Adkins and co , can pull something out of the bag with loanees , free transfers and reasonable wages / contracts .

Not in a impossiable task or wit of man , but it will show how good a manager and staff we have actually got.

Its just the added ingrediants thats needed , but it looks like they will be from Lidel not Waitrose. The positive is Lidel keeps winning the supermarket of the year.:D

Very worrying if he feels that 2 clubs have a larger budget than us, never mind 6 or 7. This season might not be the rosy one everybody (me included) anticipated when he was first appointed.

He did it with Scunny fortunately so we know he's not just a chequebook manager.

Scunny though was a long time ago in the world of planet football .

Just hope its not another season were us fans are all clutching at bloody straws again.

The piss off thing about all things SUFC , is if Adkins doesn't achieve it , nobody can. We have just got to see how the season pans out and not get too up or down , about the pre-season matches .

Money does not guarantee promotion , but it does help.

Thanks S5. That's exactly what he said!!!! Listening to each word, we've now got a budget which has settled and some other clubs are going for it this season, part gamble which we've already done and failed. Does that make sense?

In the context of Silent's thread elsewhere, we fans need to take the money side on board and really understand where we are and have understanding where the manager is.

We are bookies favourites, perhaps for the wrong reasons, perhaps for the right reasons in that we have the best manager.

He seems to be talking less positively about going up this season now, which is worrying.

In terms of budget, that's very worrying, I don't think we have to spend much to go up tbh. We could potentially do it with frees and loans. The fact the budget isn't there if needed makes you wonder, especially when he made the comment about clubs chucking away money and budgets running out. I wonder if that was aimed at Clough?

Adkins stated that he got the players back early so he could assess them individually and as a group. He stated that he was disappointed about their condition on reporting back for training but it later transpired that he was referring to those injured rather than the general condition of the squad after they had been holidaying.

Don't think he tried to portray us as underdogs, just wanted to let the fans know it's not going to be a walk in the park and that there is going to be competition. We will never be deemed underdogs in this league we must have been in the top 3 most fancied for promotion by the bookies since we've been down here.

Apart from the obvious,cb's. All Adkins has to do is manage what we have got, better than NC did. If he can add 20% to their value through the season. I reckon we will do it.

Plus key players who may include Higdon and J. Wallace - fingers crossed.

So there could be possibly 6 teams in our league that have a bigger budget than us, so what, look at the teams we played in the cup runs, possibly a bigger budget than all the teams put together in our league. Performance come through hard work with the abilities you have at the time, give me passion and performance, don't want to get into the size matters argument.:)

Not bothered about any team with a bigger budget than us . As you say , so what . We just have to be canny in the transfer market . Unfortunately players these days only play for money , and would ply there trade at a tin pot ground , support and facilities , for a touch more brass in there pay packet . Lets get players who will be proud to wear the shirt with passion , who have some bollocks to get us out of this league .

Adkins says the squad is not good enough for promotion . Then ship them out and cut our losses , with them who are not up to it . The nice approach is over , Adkins now requires to show us is ruthless streak , which may well happen after the friendly at the weekend.

Never easy , but it sorts out the men from the boys.
