So why did you put it? The whole Bladey Bladeness is clouding the subject.

99% of Blades are delighted with Adkins appointment, so maybe we should trust the man's judgement when it comes to players he's worked with in the past. And on that note, why on earth are you concerned that he may have signed him because he knows him well, i.e. knows the systems he plays well in, the players he does best alongside, knows how to motivate him etc.

And unless Adkins has managed Sharp at this level in the last few seasons, his lack of goals doesn't tell the full story.
I commented about it because genuinely from last year it proved that a manager working with the players before does not mean the players are good enough for this league. But also I appreciate that can't be known until it has been tried, I just don't think we can afford to try again. It has to be this year we get out of league one. That was my logic there.

I was delighted with the appointment of Adkins and I trust him to sign the right players but unfortunately I disagree with this particular one currently but of course that could change depending on the way he performs if he does sign.

I guess we'll have to see though mate, come the start of the season. There's so many factors effecting everything right now.

It generally means that a concept suggested by party a is accepted by party b. In this case, Bergen wrote that Axel Smeets was an excellent right back, Houso accepted this suggestion and 'agreed'.

Correct. Mainly because the managers he played under had no idea how to properly deploy him. He was horribly mismanaged, conclusively proven by his goal scoring record at other clubs.

Exactly.
Warnock - didn't give him a chance but at the point he was trying to break through, why would he.
Blackwell - made Sharp go fetch the ball out wide and pass to Beattie. He started scoring when partnered with Henderson then got injured.
Robson - well...

Billy's record over the past few years is not too dissimilar to O'Grady's, yet people were pissing their pants to sign him.

Its reverse Bladey Bladeyness

CoG is a different player entirely. An effective target man who, without scoring prolifically himself (though he got 15 in the league above us for a poor Barnsley side) would substantially increase the number of goals scored by the team. He's a strong, tireless, team player with good close control and never gives the opposition defence a moment's peace. A proper centre-forward. I'd sign him tomorrow. Billy Sharp would certainly benefit from his presence alongside him.

The part in bold is something I've been saying as well. Blades fans don't know that Axel Smeets was a decent right back.

It'll be interesting in any case, I'll be looking forward to seeing how Adkins plans to set us up with or without Sharp.

Or Ahmed Fahti is an African Nations winner and Luton Shelton has since finished top scorer in South American World Cup qualifiers and scored 35 goals for Jamaica.

Both have played at a higher standard than SUFC since leaving

Sharp, Adams, Done, McNulty

Saw him score quite a few that weren't!

Well I'm not good at this sort of "memory stuff" and I don't keep records but I bet those who do would tell us that a tidy majority of his goals were "poacher style". I do remember Bristol City, for example.

I did point out to people at the time that he needed to be the spearhead, main centre forward or he would continue to struggle. There seemed to be this insistence for a while that a centre forward had to be a big target man.

The fact that he was leading the line at Scunny and scored lots, was leading the line at Donny and scored lots.....didn't matter.

Was talking to a pig earlier who has seen Billy Sharp play a damn sight more than us blades have in recent times and he mentioned his admiration at his strength and work rate.

He's not a poacher

I completely agree. Another example is Shane Long. Perfect to lead a front line but not at all a target man type. He is however deceptively strong and very hard working, like Billy is.

The only time he got over 16 goals in a season was his 2 seasons at Scunthorpe 8 years ago. Since then he's been far from prolific, struggling to get above single figures since he left Doncaster 3 years ago, and then factor in his increase in age and we can consider ourselves ripped off.

Last season was his first season since 2012 where the club he was playing for owned him. He's been passed between clubs on loan. Can't get the consistency

He has been a championship player since 2007 which means for the last 4 years has been plying his trade in the division above us.

People will be genuinely surprised at the quality difference when he plays. We've forgotten what average championship players are like.... A damn sight better than what we currently have.

It will work this time and quite a few on here will be eating humble pie before Xmas.

Will bag a shed load and contribute well to those around him as well.

Excellent signing if it comes off, one which every other L1 manager will be envious of.

What price L1 top scorer ?

Still think you know better ??

Ps the 500k fee quoted will almost certainly be for Leeds to pay up the last year of his contract. So Sharp will bag the loot, not Leeds. Bonus.
As Sharp has his years wages up front (-tax of course), I would estimate his terms will be £7k/£8k per week at UTD ; 2 or 3 year deal.

If we're only spending £500k on him then I can't really have any complaints but I don't think he's what we need. People are saying he's a 'fox in the box' but we've already got that in Done.
So we will have 2.

Bonus

And I would not rule out McNulty to come good and give us a 3rd option.

Seriously, dependent on form/ selection etc. I could see any of these 3 lads reaching 20 goals next season.

When was the last time we have said that ? Deane n Agana in the fucking 80s !!!!

I can't see where Sharp fit's into our attacking options. McNulty, Done, Higdon, Adams with a potential return for DDG means we are already strong up top.

If signing Sharp means we'll lose Done and/or Murphy, we'll regret that.

If signing Sharp means we're getting rid of Higdon, i'll do a happy dance.

66 league goals last season, second lowest scorers in the top 8 - we are hardly strong up top

Amazed at this signing TBH. If we sign him.
Done for £600k or Sharp for £500k. No comparison
I'm with Bergen Blade on this.

I've never rated the big fat lad one bit.
Too many samey players up front for me. Done Sharp McNulty

What gets you up in pace and power.
Bristol City got up through pace and power, where does BS fit into that scenario?

Hope this is nonsense. Done is miles ahead of Sharp, we don't need him. If we're going to sign a striker, at least sign somebody of equal or more ability than our current ones. Not best pleased if this goes ahead.

I agree Done is a great striker at this level and a must-have in the team but (call me cup half empty if you like) we can't just rely on him can we? Who do you suggest that is attainable and affordable? Higdon and McNulty may come good under the new regime or they may not. We won't get Gary Hooper. I personally think McNulty could offer more with the right manager (ie one who doesn't fuck with his confidence and slag him off after a game when he has scored an important goal for us) than Higdon (who particularly concerned me in the Swindon game when they were playing him like a puppet to get him sent off).

Cotterill said that the key approach at Bristol was sign players who have been there and done it (Aaron Wilbraham - 35 , Wade Elliott -36), and sign players to fit the way you play - I think BS fits into both those scenarios under Adkins

I'm not the manager so I don't have much knowledge of players outside of the lane but I do know that when you sign somebody, you look to sign someone to improve the squad, a player that is better than what we have already. Sharp isn't that in my personal opinion. I agree on McNulty though.
