still remember it quite well silent came on tele (bbc sport it wasnt called granstand then) soon after 3-00 Ron simpson had scored in the 1st minute.Went to the replay at a very foggy bramall lane ,i think the crowd was 38000
i was only 11 at the time but i went on my own i dont think parents today would allow someone so young to go to a
big cuptie on such a horrible night ,the fog was that bad it would have been abandoned today we won 3 nil i was on the bramall lane end and never saw any of the goals jack kelsey i think was in the arsenal net . That team had a great cup record in the late fifties although in the 2nd division we beat 1st division teams quite often culminating in that 3 match marathon against leicester the season we won promotion(1961).For me that defence of = hodgy, cec,g shaw,b richardson,j shaw and g summers was the best in my time of watching the blades, there wasnt one of them
any where near 6ft tall i think cec was the tallest and i doubt he was over 5ft 10inch all from memory silent ime sure you will put me right if i have got any of it wrong;)

LSF will answer your question on who was our tallest player in the defence. Jack Kelsey broke his leg in the replay and was carried off the pitch

Without looking at stats and purely from my young memory, I'd guess Brian Richardson was the tallest, but I may be wrong? Cec possibly running him close?

Remember as if yesterday. Left. Sheffield 6.30 on coach from outside Palace cinema in Sheffield, down A1, no M1 then, Simpson scored a cracker. Replay packed out, working late just got in ground at back of Bramall Lane end and as said Kelsey broke his leg and we went on to win.
Great defence then, when we got in Highbury for first game my Dad said that they would not get through our defence.
As Finlay said and I agree the defence was probably the best ever seen at the club.
Such happy memories, will they ever come back again.
