Due to financial constraints they made no summer signings at all. None in January either. Seven academy developed players in the squad. Only lost 2 games all season. Just saying...it can be done without blowing the bank if the club is well run, well supported (Sporting and Betis easily top the crowd averages) and the academy is well developed.

In a final day of the kind we Blades know only too well, Sporting cruised to a 0-3 win away at the champions, Betis, while second placed Girona conceded a last minute equaliser at home to lowly Lugo to leave them third on goal difference.

We should twin with Gerona, nice town, HANDY FOR lloret and barcelona
Betis made 8 changes for this game, saying players were shattered . Its led to a few heated exchanges

If any manager tried doing anything remotely like that with us, he'd be out the door before he see's August.

Betis' coach responded by saying they'd " got their homework done already which entitled them to play whoever they wanted"

plus although they spent nothing on transfers they brought in several players on rather hefty wages with revenue from their best players

spains relegated clubs do not recieve parachuite payments , but sporting de gijon are a decent sized club, much bigger than Gerona, has 3 times the population

And the way they blew it yesterday...and they really blew it...that twinning idea with Girona sounds about right!

Well, this time, for once, my team is the success story...makes a change

If I remember, Gijon was a World Cup venue was it not?

Gijon's El Molinon stadium is the oldest pro football ground in the Spanish league. It was indeed a World Cup venue and host to the infamous game between Germany and Austria in which neither team attacked once the appropriate score had been sorted so both teams could qualify. At Algeria's expense. (Another team as blighted as the blades, clearly)

it was the venue for the austria v germany non match when neither team played as they manuafactured a mutually agreed result
it is known as the disgrace of Gijon locally
xixon is the basque version Gijon is Castilian , proper spanish ie majority
alicante airport is now alicante elche airport , but the original spelling is Elx
its like those stroppy scots who insist they live in Alba

Xixòn is the Asturian spelling not Basque, coming from Bable, the Asturian language (or dialect depending on your politics)

I'm sure I read somewhere that Gijon's ground is the only major stadium in Europe to have been designed by a woman? Also haven't their fans got a bit of a reputation?

Like many clubs, they have a small band of idiots - the Ultra Boys - but the reputation generally is that Sporting has one of the most loyal fan bases in Spanish football.

Promotion without spending. Isn't that what he who's name shall no longer be spoken tried to do in his first season here?

I always thought it was Lemster ,never realised it was Leominster
and in Leicestershire Beaver Castle is written Belvoir
Barnsley though say Barugh green like a sheep Baaaaa Green
