Been with him three times and Billy's goalscoring record still stands up as the chart shows.

Since 2012, still averaging a goal every three games in the League despite quite a few games being used as a sub

If he does, who will suffer, Done? Maybe they will share the workload although they are different types of players.

I always thought Mark Mcnulty was a much much poorer version of Billy.

Can't see it.....although Adkins prefers 4-4-2 with pacey widemen so there is definitely room for 2 strikers.

Think Billy's age is against him. Done and Nutty can do that job, but that's up to the Boss

I hope Murphy gets to play as the top man alongside Billy/McNuts/whoever delete as appropriate.

I am hoping he is still on good terms with Southampton and especially Les Reed. Let's get a couple of promising youngsters such as Jason McCathy (cb), U21 captain.

It's not how much you spend, it's how you utilise the transfer market.

Bill , although we love him to bits , i think the first priority is a tall , agile CF to be capable of playing and bringing the best ( and vis versa ) of Done , Murphy , McNuts , Adams .

Billy would be a great addition and a morale boost for perhaps the fans , more than the team. In saying that , if we can , bring him in .

He certainly seems to be a half decent impact sub - wages might be an issue but if they are appointing Adkins then he must have some budget available.

By the way, I'm not necessarily advocating Billy's return but maybe he might accept a three year deal at a reasonable level of money and he'd be a decent player to have around - but not my first choice.

.

He might bring in the Reading Donkey Yakubu if we're saying he will sign his old strikers. Imagine him up front with the Higgopotomus............442 here we go.
Realistically though I think he will be a good manager if it's true. With the backing the board are saying they will give the new man, I don't think he will need to scrape the bottom of the barrel for old has beens..............Onwards and Upwards.

Hopefully he won't have to scrape the bottom of the barrel.

Is it sh1t or bust for the Prince?

Whatever, Adkins has to get it right

I hope he signs Billy just to see if pinchy turns green, bursts out of his shirt and rampages down London Road.

Agree , not only that Billy would be back at his real home SUFC , with a manager who he can trust ,we would would get the best out of him , like a spring chicken , with new lease of life .Also he would be very close to his family and not having to travel far to work , ( Leeds is a motorway nightmare ) .

Think his Mrs would be happy with him being at home more , and with the tragedy he has had , in his personal life , he may be at the stage of thinking , theres more to life than money . Could be win win for us all .

Lets get Adkins confirmed first , or we all start to run away with ideas.

Aren't you a bit old to be getting this giddy?

Never to old to be giddy :P

If you read my OP - I'm not actually getting giddy about Billy coming back.

I'm also not totally convinced that Adkins will be the saviour most fans think he will be.

He will have my total support though as I think we have done well to get him and I wish him all the best

Personally I hope this transfer now happens. It's proven that if you build a team around Sharp and give the players the instructions to get the ball into the box as quickly and as often as possible like an Adkins side then he'll score goals, plenty of them at this level especially. But as some have mentioned I can also see McNulty being able to do the same if given the chance

Very true - we all thought Clough was the possible saviour.

Thinking Adkins (if it is) will pick up the SUFC baton and everything in the garden will be rosy, is far fetched.

He is nothing more than the best possible available (Robinson apart)

He will soon realise the size if the job.

Never too old indeed BOSS

.....to make an uber striker, the likes of which has never been seen before
He surely can't fail for a third time:eek:

I like McNulty so it would be a no from me anyway, we could do with someone to create chances as we already have a few players who can put chances away, Billy would be a waste of our resources imo but hopefully we'll get a strong, quick and athletic player who can bag a hatful, who will come to league one to give us another valuable option in which we will need to get out of this league, that isn't my job to find them but perhaps we may get a scouting network now that can look outside of their own bubble.

Billy Sharp's stats: http://www.soccerbase.com/players/player.sd?player_id=38747&season_id=143

  • 2014/15: 5 goals in 18 starts and 17 sub apps
  • 2013/14: 6 goals in 21 starts and 5 sub apps
  • 2012/13: 12 goals in 32 starts and 12 sub apps

Can't really comment about his time at the two club's before Leeds but I know while at Elland Road he was never or at least very rarely played to his strength's he was put on the wide left or right of a front trio at times aswell as expected to play as the lone frontman too.

Sharp IS a goalscorer and if played in the right setup he WILL get goals especially at the level we find ourselves at & at this level he'd have to be considered as one of if not the best forward in the league surely

Billy seemed happy enough at Leeds last season so I fully expect him to stay there. Not really into this going back for former players. Billy's had two cracks at it and for whatever reason it didn't work out. Plenty of other strikers out there.

These were my thoughts on him the last time he was linked (a year ago):

Should Billy Sharp return for the third time?

Billy Sharp has been linked with a return to Bramall Lane and it's not surprising. The Blades need a goal scorer, Sharp has scored a lot of goals at this level before, and of course, is a real Blade. But is he ideal? Is he the same player that he was a few years ago?

There comes a time for all strikers when they just seem to stop scoring, suddenly or gradually. James Beattie was an example of the former, doing well and scoring goals for Stoke in the Premiership, but then failing to score at all for his next three clubs. The third was his return to Bramall Lane, which we all know didn't work out.

If you look at the leading scorers list in the Premiership there aren't many strikers aged 30+ there. Some strikers who have stopped scoring can temporarily regain their scoring touch by dropping down a level. (Beattie scored a few for Accrington in League Two after he left us). Richard Cresswell stopped scoring in the Championship, then got a few in his first season in League One, before the goals dried up again, and he had to move further down the leagues.

Billy Sharp scored 9 goals in 11 starts at Southampton, continuing his good form at Doncaster and helping Southampton to promotion. He failed to get into the team in the Premiership though, and went on loan at Nottingham Forest, scoring 10 goals that season. The record wasn't too bad, but not as good as it used to be. This season he's had two loan spells, at Reading and back at Doncaster, scoring just 6 goals in 25 games. These are disappointing figures for a player like Sharp and he was recently also dropped from Doncaster's starting line up.

Sharp's main weakness has always been his lack of pace. It is impressive that he's been able to score as many as he has with such a limitation. It shows that he's been good at other things - determination, a predator's instinct, quick turns, calm head, good finishing technique, anticipation, body strength.

But even though Sharp hasn't relied on pace, there will come a day when his agility, mobility, ability to turn quickly will deteriorate a bit more, meaning that he will require an extra tenth of a second to get shots in, which will see many of them blocked. He's just 28, so he may be able to regain his scoring touch, even at Championship level. But it could also be the case that Sharp's lack of natural athleticism will see his goals dry up quicker than some other strikers. Has it started already? I watched him at the Keepmoat Stadium last month. He had a quiet game, but he did get on the scoresheet - a teammate's header hit him and bounced in. It's hard to make conclusions based on one game. Hard to criticise a poacher who scored a goal.

I think it's vital that we study Sharp's performances this season, not just look at his record and general game a few years ago. Clough must also decide if Sharp is the type of striker he needs in his set up next season. It wouldn't be nice to see Sharp being brought back and then not being given his favored role as a goal poacher. What will happen if we do bring Ched Evans back, and he's preferred as our main striker? I can't see Sharp and Evans working well together, and there will be others who can do a better job as a target man or supporting striker.

Clough has played 4-5-1 most of this season and has played very different type of players (than Sharp) in the striker position. The player who's most similar to Sharp, Shaun Miller, was sent out on loan, suggesting Clough didn't want a goal poacher. Formations and preferences can change for next season though.

It would be fantastic to see Sharp return and get 30 goals to fire us to promotion next season. Fans would love it. But let's do our home work before we decide. He won't be a cheap signing and we need to be confident that he's exactly the player we need.
