Would it get a higher mark if you read it in an exaggerated camp tone?

Camp and careworn, I think, is just right for that one. I can picture it delivered by John Hurt, Simon Callow or maybe dear Larry himself....

There is no such thing as "hoof" v "not hoof". The entire football world (you aside) lives between theses extremes.

Until you move on from this, you are going to continue to pick fights with straw men.

What fascinates me is that, as I understand it, in the Manichean World of Pinchy, we played "hoof" under Bassett, Warnock and Blackwell and were always in the top division or the top half of the 2nd tier; whereas under Wilson, Weir and Clough we played "proper football" and have been marooned in the 3rd Division for what seems like aeons.

How does this compute with "proper football" being the only way to go?

Yes the trouble with us in the last 4 years is we played too much football and not creating many chances. I am a believer in passing the ball when necessary and play the long ball when necessary

I have been going to BDTBL since 1970 too and the football under Harris (until Dec 1973) was far more exciting than 1989-1992

I take your point, but for sheer exhilaration going from a shit relegated to the 3rd Division team in 1988 to a top ten in the Country team in 1992 takes some beating.

Also that 1988-92 period was the only time the Gods seemed to be on our side:

1989: promoted on GD
1990: promotion goes down the last day; we win easily and our rivals are thrashed
1991: don't win any of first 16 and still stay up
1992: bottom in November and only win 5 games before Xmas and end up 9th.

What does league position have to do with it? What matters is how many times your midfielders knock it back to your centre backs who knock it out to the full backs, who knock it inside to the centre midfielders again who lay it back to the centre halves...

That's only because it took them 4 years to lube up for the epic rogering they gave us for the next 15.

Yes it was a big rise in league placings. I liked Bassett and I do understand that his style was good timing for us because in 1988 we had a poor squad and McEwan's passing style was too difficult to make it work so Bassett brought in the right players to make his style work

Not at all. Who needs passing?

The game should consist of 90 minutes of 50/50 challenges, with each team required to surrender the ball immediately after taking possession. The match would start by way of an additional official, known as the ball-chucker, who would throw the ball (as high as he can) in the air whereupon the biggest, most powerful brick-shithouses in the respective teams have to fight to the death. The winner obtains....possession of the ball, which he is required to surrender immediately. An additional official, known as the ball-chucker, would then....

Goals can only be scored by chance, during a "fight to the death" phase. After a goal, an additional official known as...

The game ends when the last player remains alive, whereupon an additional official....

Are you ok?

In the world outside S2, where games and leagues and trophies are won.....

What does moving out and shortening mean. Who out of the two is favourite? Ta.
If you put £9 on Parkinson you get £13 in total, £4 winnings plus your £9 back. Put £9 on Adkins you win £29.25. £20.25 winnings plus your £9 back. Making Parkinson favourite.

Not sure what odds you're using for that example, but the current betting is nothing like that

He can join the ranks of Michael Tongue, Matthew Kilgannon, Neil Collins and Fabian Brandy.

Although I think we should forget Atkins and make an overture towards Tony Pullis.

Pulis is on £85kpw and if Berahino goes is looking at a budget close £50 million, if he stays, £27 million good luck on that one:D

I'm afraid I've explained this so often, without it ever sinking in, that I'm weary of it now. One more time, in simple words. It's all about winning. Which teams win most often? The best footballing teams. The best footballing teams win games, leagues and trophies. Not the ones who can kick it longest, hardest and highest. The best teams play pass and move football. They assuredly do not play "Hoofy football". ["Gerritintbox Iniesta tha' wanker"] Proper football is winning football. Wimbledon are extinct.

Only in S2......

I despair [again...]. I'm in a state of constant despair.....

I must be a philistine Pinchy . All i want is a winning team , with some action on the field that gets my arse out of my seat . Winning football is the name of the game , and i could care less what name anybody calls it . Where in league 1 , a long way off champions league . Mix and match depending on the opposition .

Not a purest , but perhaps pugilistic in wanting to win at BDTBL and away . We've had the shit kicked out of us on many occasion this season . Yes play football , in any way that gives SUFC and all connected a successful team and season.

..... I am a believer in passing the ball when necessary and play the long ball when necessary

I'm with you on that, Silent .... but on the basis that the decision to play a short pass, forwards, backwards or sideways, a long pass, a hoof to a channel or launch it to a giant centre-forward is made by a good quality player based on momentary circumstance in a game, not based on a pre-determined instruction meted out prior to the season starting that will get you dropped if you don't repeat it for 90 minutes.

(and a long pass isn't the same as a hoof or a "launch").

I've probably prattled about this before, but the John Beck style was to carry out a specific set of instructions regardless of circumstance. He had a player from Handsworth and Brook School, as a full-back (who could play a bit further forward too). Handsworth-lad told us over a shandy or two in the Old Crown once of Beck's tactical talks -

To paraphrase:

John Beck: "You're on edge of box, with a clear shot on goal, and I know you can shoot a bit....what do you do?"
Handsworth-lad: "I'll have a pop, see if i can score"
JB: "Do that and I'll bring you off, and you won't play for me for another 3 months. What you do is this - always - knock it wide to the winger and let him put the ball over for donkey there in the middle. It's his job to score, yours is to deliver the ball to wingers, (after you've finished getting too far forward)".
HL: "But what if the wingers not there, boss?"
JB: "Then I'll bring him off, and he won't player for me for another 3 months...... but that won't happen cos he knows his job"
