JFH must be in with a shout but given our 'connections' don't be surprised if we bring in a foreign manager

Welcome to the reality of English Soccerball Jim.

This will have cost HRH a few bog rolls but it shows he (and his money) are committed to SUFC's success. TBH I would have been expecting him to go if NN hadn't!

I know nowt about employing a football manager, all I know is I want fast exciting attacking football and players who want to bleed red and white stripes (RIP Woody). I'm hoping somewhere, someone in our setup does know who to pick cause our track record of crap managers makes me think someone can sell sand to the Saudis

Who is JFH?

I hate this example and it's brought up every single time a manager gets sacked.

Alex Ferguson had won the Scottish league 4 times with Aberdeen and the UEFA cup, he had pedigree, and a reason to have patience. Clough kept Derby mid-table in the championship, that's all we had to go on except the regression this season.
Clough took us to two semi finals in 18 months with a league 1 club saved us from relegation and took us into the playoffs, not a bad return, A lot of people said that Ferguson made bad decisions through his my way or highway attitude, but it got results in the end, his previous record at Aberdeen was not going to save him on that day, I just hope that the board hasn't made a decision as they say out of the frying pan into the fire, and what happens next season if we don't get promotion? Sack the manager

Alex Ferguson had an exceptionally good track record before that point. There was evidence he's get it right. Turn those statements on their head and I give you Nigel Clough.

Saved us from relegation got to the playoffs this season and 2 cup semifinals with a league 1 club in 18 months IMO that is a good track record

I do hope not. What on Earth has he done to justify being manager of SUFC? I sincerely hope this is not insider stuff Foxy? A completely underwhelming candidate. We need more than a big and exotic-sounding name!

He's done about as much as David Weir had and most were delighted when we got him. Yourself included.

I don't think he'd work out anyway as it happens. Mind, the field as it stands is shocking all around.

You missed the massive improvement of a whole 2 places in league one with 3 transfer windows to sort it out.

Dig a little deeper and it doesn't bare scrutiny.

Saving us from relegation was more a measure of just undoing the complete incompetence of the previous manager.

We finished as far away from automatic promotion and we did from relegation, in terms of points. We ended the season with a whimper, and despite being provided huge funding, could not even fill key positions.

He's done a stabilising job, at best. He simply has not shown the urgency and planning required to get out of the division, both in terms of the style of football last season, the squad building, and the post mortem in the closed season.

I'm a bit sad to see him go, but he's the architect of his own downfall.

alcoblade Thank you - I thought I was the only one.

"Saved us from relegation"? Blind Freddy could have saved us from relegation. It really was as simple as replacing that idiot Weir. The cup runs I'll give you - but anyone, anyone, other than the utter incompetent that was in charge would have been able to keep Utd in Div 3. No credit for that.

post of the day. sums it up perfectly IMO

We had money to spend in those transfer windows through good cup runs money he generated, I didn't say he had got everything right as we all know, but I think he would have sorted a lot of the problems out this close season, we need stability and changing managers at the end of every season because we didn't get promoted is not going to resolve the issue, IMO we were going in the right direction given time, the board got rid of Wilson and look where that got us, managers used to get the sack if the team were relegated or finished close to relegation.

I love this club, never a dull moment. Just as the season ends with nothing to look forward to , then Bang in the news again. UTB

The timing is interesting. It's 2 weeks since Swindon and they could/should have sacked him then. The board have been waiting to see whose contracts haven't been extended.

The money generated from the cup runs hmmmmm not sure if you say that in support of Clough or not, to me it makes his failure to bring better players to the club even more alarming.

I have to say that I am not surprised as JP had said that the directors were going to meet and review the club's performance and I thought it premature to see Clough's "Business as usual" approach as conclusive evidence that he would be retained. I think the retained list had to be submitted to meet FL regs but other than that the only transactions were really routine ones to my mind. Whether these were Clough's decisions or "business" decisions who knows. This is positive news only if we have a replacement lined up who is a better manager and ready to step in, but at least Clough hasn't had the chance to completely blow this year's transfer budget and replicate the entire Derby side.

Yes and probably some of the retained were deals envoked by clauses - regardless of who is manager (wasnt McEverley's based on appearances)?

Blimey. Where were you when...

It's like the Kennedy assassination all over again.

(Or is that tastelessly overstating things?)

For me we can't really say whether it's a good or bad decision till we know who's lined up.

I really liked Clough as a person and I'd've liked to've seen what his team could do with two centre backs. I think we'd've made the autos.

Really wish him well wherever he ends up next.

I imagine the Powers That Be do have someone lined up and I'd like to think they've even been talking about transfer targets. We need a good pre-season and that has to start pretty much immediately.

They have big plans for the club, let's hope they can deliver.
