The best I can offer you on that is all the sack victims are Clough men, brought in by him. Morgs is a long term employee and his record with the U21's stands up to scrutiny.
How you can judge his extremely short term tenure as manager as failure is flimsy in the least.
I'll stand by my feeling that Chris Morgan will one day make a good manager at league level. Whether its with Sheff U is another question.

No it's not. Ended up being so at Villa but look before then. Appointed for Norwich the week his Colchester team won there 5-0 or thereabouts.

Actually, I never understand why everyone has to fall on the sword when only the manager has clearly fucked up. They come as a team, seems to be the explanation. Well, Morgan wasn't part of that initial team. It's impossible to say from here if he's done a good or a bad job. Given the available info, I'd say he's worth keeping for transitional purposes.

Words cannot describe how utterly pissed off I am at this decision. How many times do we have to change manager to eventually figure out that changing manager every fucking year doesn't work...

If they get this next one wrong (which given our track record, is probable) then get ready for division 4.
 
I thought he'd be given another shot at it, but I do wonder if his stubbornness in not admitting his mistakes has cost him. The season post-mortem with the board must have been the catalyst for this, otherwise he'd have gone last week. The centre half issues sum it up for me and not bringing Collins back in for the 2nd leg was wrong IMO.

All that said, I'd have given him until Christmas, but I am not surprised in the slightest that he's gone. He's made too many mistakes - the centre half situation, the constant conceding from set-pieces, the repeated small weak midfield.

It is worth sticking to something if you can see the building blocks, but as others have said, this wasn't actually in much evidence from last season. There was no spine to the team, and setting up defensively despite that being the worst part of our squad did not suit the team and made for some excruciating football at home. And all that is consistent with his time at Derby, and we're stuck another division down.

I am sad he didn't achieve more after the promise of last year, but we had the most resources of any club in this division and we have seriously under-performed. We're all sick of this division and football is a results business these days. What we've done today is no more short term than 90% of the rest of the league.

As for replacements, Nigel Adkins would be my preference, knows what he's doing at this level. Warburton second choice.

Agree 100%. I suspect the board will have wanted answers on Collins and Butler but never got any

I think you might be right there

I have to say, I was completely uninspired when I heard the line that we needed a centre half and a forward, and the midfield was OK.

Our league position flattered our points total and disguised the country mile we were away from automatic promotion. We should be aiming to storm this league. Talk of tweaking around the edges of a bang average third division team didn't cut it with me.

But how many times does it have to be repeated that sticking with shit ones will only deliver shit outcomes? It's the appointments that are at fault, not the sackings.

Bristol City are not regretting hiring and firing, and have just walked the league with a manager who's been there 2 minutes.

i can't help thinking there is a lot going on behind the scenes.. he has managed to fall out with Collins.. butler. jcr.. deG.. constantly criticises McNulty.. plays Done on the wing.. and leaves Che on the bench.. upset Doyle..
well done board. i'm shocked but impressed by some bloody leadership for a change.

It's not about whether they're any good.
It's about Clough's stubborn nature and attitude to firstly fall out with two players,
and then not admit to anyone his part to play in it.

Nothing to do with the quality
Maybe the board don't want a man in charge with such stubbornness and attitude.
 
IMO it is A bad decision, just look at Alex Ferguson, was on the verge of getting sacked at Man Utd and Mark Robbins popped up and scored that goal and saved him from the firing squad. As a manager you couldn't get a more stubborn twat than him, Cloughie was not even in his league, but sticking with Ferguson brought the club all the rewards and the best football manager in the English leagues. How easily that could have been different if Robbins hadn't scored that goal?

So we signed Butler despite him being shit and then never played him? And then never admitted that it was a bit of a cock up?

You're probably right in your assessment of the 2, but that entire situation was created by ourselves last off-season and we never looked close to correcting it (Paddy McCarthy....)

I agree he had no answers.

The bust up at the start of the season with Doyle, Butler and Collins set the tone as Clough did not seem to sort that situation out.

Alex Ferguson had an exceptionally good track record before that point. There was evidence he's get it right. Turn those statements on their head and I give you Nigel Clough.

Firstly I am shocked.
I thought NC did a good job, people seem to have a short memory. Just over a year ago he was the new messiah having saved us from relegation and nearly reached the pay-offs.
We DID make the play-offs this season. We may well have made auto next. So why has he gone?
Like some peeps have intimated, I reckon there has been some issue blown up that we don't know about.
Clough is stubborn, but that's not always a bad thing, he takes after is dad for that, but sometimes he remains intransigent when he has made errors, and that can rub people up the wrong way.
Long term it may be a good thing, or a complete disaster, time will tell.
As usual I'm optimistic.

Not saying I think he'll get it, more that I think he has a number of admirers at the moment and that he'll certainly make his way to the list.

I don't think he's got the adequate experience in getting sides promoted that would put him at the top of the list.

I hate this example and it's brought up every single time a manager gets sacked.

Alex Ferguson had won the Scottish league 4 times with Aberdeen and the UEFA cup, he had pedigree, and a reason to have patience. Clough kept Derby mid-table in the championship, that's all we had to go on except the regression this season.

I actually agree with this. And the whole 'well the new manager needs someone to tell him about the players' stuff is twaddle too. If (perhaps a big if) we appoint a proper football manager, I'd prefer them not to need the training wheels of Chris Morgan to tell them how to do their job and assess the squad.
