When Clough took over at Burton in 1998 they were in the Southern Premier League Premier Division, the league below the Conference. He managed to gain promotion to the Conference in 2002.
Burton then remained in the Conference for seven years, showing gradual improvement. They finished in sixth place in 2007 and fifth place in 2008.
In January 2009, when he took over at Derby, Burton were 13 points clear at the top of the conference and you couldn’t get a bet on them to be promoted (they went on to win it). So that’s effectively two promotions (and no relegations) in a little over ten years
At Derby, his team finished 18th, 14th, 19th, 12th and 10th. They were in 14th position when he was sacked in September 2013. We all know what happened last season at SUFC
Looking at the stats, his record isn’t too impressive. But he seems a good fit for the Blades, and I’m confident he will get us out of League One this season or next. He’s still young but has been managing teams for almost 17 years. Presuming we get to the Championship, I hope we give him enough time as we gave Warnock if not more, and don’t sack him if we have one poor season.
Saying that, his brief is to get us up there. Given the resources at his disposal, if he fails to achieve promotion by the end of next season, I can’t see him lasting much longer. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.
Barring a Weir-like plummet down the table, I think he should be given another full season even if we are still in League One.
