Fans seem to have a problem wherein once someone is deemed shit, they're always shit. Today, for example, Higdon was one of our better players yet still got ridiculous amounts of the usual abuse. I've not been impressed by him so far but when someone plays well you have to acknowledge it.

The best example came with Porter. As he became a cult/joke figure he was dismissed as shit with people not being able to solely look at his performance. The same could be said of many regarding Matt Hill.

I loved Matt Hill, hence my dp, agree on the centre back thing.
True, although personally I always really like Matt Hill, especially at centre back. For a short guy he seemed to win every header he went for!

Higdon deserves more of a chance, only then can people even think of slagging him off.

Stunning miss by him today though!

Thought he held the ball up ok but he's not what you'd call dynamic. Better than Porter?

The goalposts had more movement than higdon today. So many times he just stood still when a bit of effort could have opened up their defence.

Sorry but that is absolute rubbish and highlights what the OP has stated. He held the ball up well, won headers and linked the play. Yes he should have done better with the shot on he edge of the box but he should have also been awarded a penalty when he wrestled to the ground. Can't remember Diego getting the same abuse today when he didn't score from that chance or the two shots he blasted over the bar in similar positions to Higdon.
I thought MH and DG were starting to looking like a good partnership especially when DG started to play closer to MH in the second half.

Higdon held the ball up well today, and won some good flick-ons.

From where we were sat, the rest of his game was woeful. He simply doesn't make runs--a fact that made some of our midfielders look a bit stupid at times today (unfairly), as they banged balls into vacant spaces that any centre forward worth a shirt would have been steaming into. As for the one he blasted over the bar ... please don't make me revisit that, not until I've had a drink.

I agree that people shouldn't be on his back straight at the first whistle but I thought he was shocking today. Anyone who didn't see the game on Wednesday would have thought he had played 90 mins against Spurs.

Anyone notice he didn't go celebrate the goal with Diego? Don't think he's enjoying it here anymore.

Yes I thought the same. I thought Higdon was excellent today, looked fit, sharp and battled against a very physical side. Thought he linked really well with Diego second half, not so much with McNulty, but I think McNulty struggled to play off him a little. Probably just like in the first half where we had a lot of players getting to know each other a little bit.

Apart from that awful shot from Higdon, he played well

It wasn't just Higdon, Davies, Alcock, Baxter and Dimaio all got a few moans to the normal digs. I think those noises will get quieter as the season goes on and games come thick and fast

Good point. Of course, some footballers are just shit. But Higdon held the ball well today overall.

Supporting the blades...

Rule 1 - Blades need a scapegoat
Rule 2 - if scapegoat leaves. Find new one

If you expect Higdon to be "steaming into" vacant spaces you're looking for a different player. It's like asking Wayne Allison to run the channels. He needs to stay in the middle, hold the ball up and bring others into play, which he did most of the time today.

I thought he did his job well and would have deserved the goal had he taken the one chance he got.

Fair play, but shouldn't we be expecting more of him than just holding the ball up ? "Steaming" was the wrong word. But I'll stand by a general disappointment that he always seems so static, and rarely seems to anticipate a ball.

Please don't get me wrong, I'm not on his back as such--but I did think his all-round game was poor today

I think it's fair to expect more in terms of his touch and his passing sometimes but it's clear he lacks general mobility so we can't expect him to be making runs all over the place.

Personally I think we need to play a different style when he's in the team, based on getting it wide and getting crosses in the box for him. A 3-5-2 system in theory should have been ideal for him but the other players we had in the team didn't work in that system. How many good balls did we put in today? One?

Before kick off I said he looked a lot leaner.

Best I've seen him play.

I thought one of the main reasons he was better today was our change in style at times. We were more direct and hoofed occasionally but not in an aimless manner. It's not something we should permanently switch to in my opinion but it's a good option to have.

If Higdon gets chances/half chances he'll stick a good few away.

When he got booed of the other week it made me vomit.

Give the bloke a chanceFFS

Never ever boo a man wearing red and white. Ever.

But I really don't believe he's promotion worthy Div1 striker. Hope I'm wrong, but I doubt I am...

I think people are making the chance out to be easier than it was. He probably should have had a touch and gone forward but having struggled recently he snatched at it. That was then followed by singing for McNulty which is just ridiculous and will only make matters worse. I hate booing after games but waying players going off as happened to Higdon tops even that.

Yer probably right.
Hopefully there will be better coming in.

Having said that I think Higdon would be better in a two up front
