It is a dismal 2 point from 12 at the Lane for United as another lacklustre showing saw the Blades huff and puff but never look particularly likely to beat a surprisingly poor MK Dons side. To add insult to injury, the visitors who were quite content with a point; actually snatched all three points as Delle Alli scored from a ricochet from a late free kick.

United had probably shaded the contest but in truth never totally convinced and most of the noise from the crowd came due to an equally unsatisfactory performance from the officials. The late goal added to the chagrin of the home fans who in truth will be fuming at the side tossing away three home games in a row without a victory to speak of.

United gave a debut to Chris O’Grady up top and also started with Flynn at right back and Basham back in midfield. MK Dons had the luxury of resting hat trick hero Benik Afobe who began on the bench.

The visitors started better and were pinging it around confidently as United struggled to get a foothold. Still they created little other than a few corners and a Spence header at Howard and slowly United began to get into the game. A Basham long ranger was straight at the keeper. Scougall then hit badly wide before a decent move saw Harris played in by Doyle and the ball across just evaded Basham.

A blow for United came when O’Grady had to depart; his debut only lasting 20 minutes as McNulty came on as the loannee limped off holding the back of his calf. McCarthy headed over and Campbell Ryce’s cross shot was saved before a series of strange decisions from the referees with Harris feeling he should have got a free kick right in front of the assistant. Soon after two yellow cards came for challenges that seemed innocuous by comparison with Alli and Hodson booked.

United had enjoyed the better of the second part of the first half after MK had started the better but there had been no real clear chances for either sides.

The second half saw United start at a better tempo and Campbell Ryce continued to threaten running at his men. Scougall had a fierce shot well saved and then McNulty hooked wide after a corner but still United were struggling to create much other than half chances.

MK had been less of an attacking threat but Afobe came on and Kay had a header cleared off the line (which was as good a chance as anything United had) and then Murphy had a shot at Martin at the other end.

More yellow cards followed with both centre backs being booked and Kay could have walked for a clumsy foul on McNulty, McFadzean committed a series of niggly fouls and also was fortunate to escape with just one yellow card.

From a set play United got the ball in the net but McCarthy’s finish was ruled out. It was difficult to tell if it was for the original header from Basham or the follow up but there were not too many complaints on this one from United.

Baxter came on for Scougall and then after McEveley’s clumsy foul gave MK a free kick. McGahey came on for the injured Basham. From the resultant free kick in a really good position, the ball was hit hard and true from Green but although Howard save the ball ricocheted off another MK player and ALLI reacted to the loose ball and turned it into the empty net. It was a fortunate deflection but the visitors reacted first. Karl Robinson’s reaction on the goal showed what it meant as they had turned a workmanlike point into seemingly all three points.

United now threw on McGahey up top as they desperately tried to force a late goal. They won a few late corners and had a few shots blocked but the only real drama came when finally the referee sent off an MK Dons player with Green dismissed for second yellow right at the death. Soon after the final whistle came and signalled another desperately disappointing outcome for Clough’s Blades who are now rapidly losing ground on the top sides.

United – We had three home games on the bounce and many felt we could maybe get 6-7 or even 9 points. We got 2. Tonight daft as it sounds we were better than the previous two home games in that we had some semblance of control of the game and were better than MK Dons for long spells BUT we created sod all most of the game and it was so powder puff. They were cynical and the ref was poor but we have to do better than that. We have to be able to break teams down, get into the box, create chances, get men forward.

We did none of these things other than a smattering of occasion. It shows how poor we are when our main outlet and threat is a journeyman winger (who can’t cross). We lost O’Grady but with him/without him looked unlikely to ever get in decent positons as did not have numbers or support for the long striker. Everything was at a slow tempo all game and we never really hurry the visitors. We had a few long range shots on target and one decent cross from Harris Basham nearly got and then a disallowed goal from a set play. Outside of this I am struggling to remember many clear chances (McNulty hooked one wide) and their keeper did not make a significant save of note all game. I do feel we could have played another couple of hours and still not scored.

What irked me is they were quite poor and looked there for the beating with two slow centre backs who both could have been sent off and would have been if we had put them under more pressure. They did not really look to attack us and wanted a point but for the most part we could not break them down. We did not change the tactics or approach. We also kept with the same formation with Baxter for Scougall much of a likeness. It was actually boring. More than being poor, it was that devoid of any kind of excitement, skill or bravery from players to take chances and gamble in the last third. It was rigid, boring and simply set us up to try and snatch a 1-0 at best. I hear some saying we will come good and we will get it right but playing this way we will not. We will stay around 5th-10th all season and at best may sneak into the playoffs but we are not good enough way we are playing to go up. Sure we could sign 3 or 4 more players but even if he gives him the funds not sure what the point is if he sets teams up in such a pedestrian and limited fashion? Tonight actually showed even though some of players are not maybe good enough; most did their jobs tonight to varying degrees. There was no real lack of effort but the unwillingness to support the striker with another or to say to a midfielder you run forward with the ball and not go backwards or sideways. It seems we are setting up not to lose but we are losing so we might aswell go for it. At least we might get entertained. At the moment it is desperately dull to watch. Sure we could have drawn 0-0 but that was not much better really. We did not deserve to lose tonight and were not awful but we were average and that really sums us up. Bang average and boring to watch allied to that does not make for much to be positive about.

There is still time to turn it around with incoming players and a change of approach from him but if he does not change the latter then we may aswell forget promotion.

MK Dons – They started the game well and we struggled to get it off them for the first 5-10 minutes but then after that they regressed and the game became really scrappy. We then got control without being totally on top and they became quite poor. Felt they were niggly all game and picked up a lot of bookings and gave away some quite cynical fouls (could have had a few more given too). However they will say they defended well I am sure. I will disagree and say they were put under absolutely no pressure. When we did attack them they looked poor and I felt with more attacking intent they could have buckled. They did little going up front and seemed to have settled for a draw and in the second half barely mustered an attack.

The free scoring side of Saturday was missing and they tried to dig in and just get a point.

Then at the death they steal a goal (bit fortunate but got men in the box and capitalised- if it had happened at other end doubt we would have followed it up sadly). Bit of a smash and grab but they will also argue that we did not create much or have many clear chances. Yes they were cynical and niggly and stretched things with gamesmanship but will argue they kept a clean sheet, got a late goal and that sense was a perfect away performance. We have done things like them away in game and will again.

Horrible to watch and at times they bordered on cheating but we have to be better to beat such teams. They also have strikers such as Grigg and Afobe in reserve who are much superior to McNulty and Higdon who we have. They have shown at home they can blow teams away and can dig in away like tonight when they were not at best to get the result. We sadly have got some tonkings away (got better recently) but don’t look remotely like hammering teams or even winning comfortably at the Lane. The recent home record and our goals scored compared to theirs shows why they look far more like promotion contenders at current time.

I have to say they were not great tonight and I expected much better. They had an off night and still coped with our toothless attack fairly easily and still won the game. Says it all.

Howard 6/10 – Had little to nothing to do. Made a few routine catches and a couple of time he maybe could have come or shouted when defenders cleared. For the free kick it may have been a decent instinctive save but he pushed it back into play. I may be a little harsh but again as with Saturday he has had little to do and one chance they have had and it is in the back of the net.

Flynn 7.5/10 – Did ok in an unfamiliar positon. He was better than Alcock had been in previous games. Thought Flynn was steady enough. He defended ok and was actually worse going forward making some poor decisions or not always overlapping (maybe he forgot how to go forward!). He got skinned badly by Afobe at the end when they had a half chance. I would leave him there though. Was one of our better players tonight.

Harris 7/10 – Got clattered a lot by their player early on but kept going. One superb cross which just evaded Basham but some poor crosses too. He was alright though and to say he got a lot of hammer kept getting up and getting on with it (although 2nd half thought he was looking for free kick too much!).

McEveley 7.5/10 – Thought he was maybe our best player again and his mark would be higher BUT he gave away the free kick that led to the goal with a silly and unnecessary challenge. He was too eager and it cost us the game in the end. Other than that (even though it was a big moment) he played really well. He won tackles, got first to the ball and brought it forward well. He was good in the air too and overall looked so commanding until the free kick. Sounds like I am being picky but it did cost us.

McCarthy 5.5/10 – He is not impressing me at the moment and for an experience player his confidence seems shot. He gave it away 2 or 3 times and kept going backwards or to the keeper as seemed to not want to take initiative. His touch and passing is poor.

Doyle 6.5/10 – He was alright tonight and did his job in terms of tackles and breaking up play after a poor start where they threatened to dominate early on. As game went on he continued to do simple things and move it on with a few short passes or miscontrols but generally sound enough.

Basham 7/10 – Thought he was decent enough again. Thing I like is that he has never hid in recent weeks and has kept plugging away and tried to go forward.
He got in some good positions in the box and actually did go forward more than most but still has a tendency to mistime his jump (he is awful in the air for someone so tall sad to say!). He has been one of better players in recent weeks. He is functional rather than spectacular and I would play him centre back with McEveley and send McCarthy back in the future.

Scougall 6.5/10 – Thought he put a lot of effort in but again failed to see much of an influence on the ball. He had 2 or 3 decent runs forward including one step over that bought a free kick and another that led to a half chance. Had one shot straight at keeper. However he got injured 2 or 3 times due his own miscontrol or bad
touch leading to a tackle. He was taken off as seemed to be struggling but Baxter had even less impact.

Campbell Ryce 6.5/10 – May get called for marking him up tonight but I felt for all the mixed bag of crosses he was again the main threat for us in terms of
looking most likely to make something happen. He actually put 5 or 6 awful crosses in or failed to get a cross in but also put some good ones in, particularly early. At least 4 or 5 were put into the right area but no one attacked. He put some short and some longer (admittedly some behind the goal again). His crossing is not the best but cannot say he did not get a ton of balls in tonight. His decision making continues to frustrate but as I have said for all criticism of final product did anyone else get any more balls into the box or right area (even on a few occasions) tonight? Still end product mostly was not good enough but did much more than Murphy.

O’Grady – Won a few headers but flicked them up in the air and we had no one alongside him so it did not matter. Hard to judge as only 20 minutes in he was subbed. He seemed as if it was back of his calf and I would suggest he might be out for a few weeks now. We did see even in brief time that it won’t matter who we have up front as unless they have support or decent service with men around him/them we won’t create or score many.

Murphy 4/10 – Have to say thought that was his poorest game of the season. We left him on as he can always work a bit of magic or score a decent goal but today he was really poor and cannot remember much going right for him. He was often crowded out or got muscled out of it. Came inside and played up top for a period but mostly was not in the game.

Subs –

McNulty 5/10
- No service really but he was slow and stagnant for all criticism of the formation and tactics. Only had one spell where he turned centre back and drew a booking (could have been red) and then got involved with other centre back. I thought finally he is showing them they are in a game but then disappeared again. He was given some horrible service but still expect him to be on front foot and was often behind man or caught offside. Cannot play as the lone striker as lacks pace and strength.

Baxter – Played a few lazy lofted balls behind men that slowed play down and did not really get into the game. Still at least makes those who have criticised him so much that we were not much better without him than with him.

McGahey – Brought on as Basham limped off and they scored instantly so went up front for last few minutes but did not have many touches.

Manager rating : Clough 4/10 – Just not changing things. Stubbornly persisting with same formation, tactics and approach. Hoping to snatch 1-0’s at home and playing it tight with one up top most of the games. Yielded a massive 3 points from 5 games now (15 points) and we don’t even look like we can beat sides at home let alone win comfortably or hammer sides. He does not change it and just keeps going with same rigid, boring approach. It is dull to watch and not much better than Weir’s sideways/backwards approach. We seem to have no idea how to break teams down and just get it to Campbell Ryce or Murphy and hope they can jink past a man and get a cross in. Either they don’t or when they do there is no one in the box and it is cleared. We never really get men beyond the striker and for a side that had so many in midfield we don’t dominate here either. It is not working (the goals scored) and home record suggests he has to change the approach. If he doesn’t the season will peter out with another play off defeat being the height of our ambitions for me. The division is poor and is there for the taking but his negativity is threatening to waste another season. Tonight showed it is not so much about the players (Murphy was poor but rest were ok – certainly not awful) as the effort was there but they are almost playing like robots – too scared to come out of his system or actually god forbid attack and move into the box. We had 2 or 3 long range shots and maybe a couple of scrambles but the keeper did not have a proper save to make all game.

Officials – Dire. Referee was totally inconsistent all game. He gave some fussy free kicks to them in the first half and missed some obvious ones for us. He then booked a few of their players for very little and then second half seemed to let most things go and gave very little either way. He just had no control of the game all night. He let timewasting and cynical tactics from MK go without punishment and also really could have sent off both centre backs. McFadzean committed numerous fouls either side of the booking, The other lad could have walked for a bad late and high tackle on McNulty. It was an almost a waste of time when he did finally send the lad off at the end. He was equally bad for both sides. I felt the sub Afobe got fouled three times and got nothing and he actually gave United a lot of 50/50’s second half (had been other way round first half). He missed countless hand balls and seemed to let players take free kicks/throws from wherever they want (Harris stl 25 yards at one point!). The linesman were as bad if not worse. The one on the South Stand in the first half may aswell have been sat with me missing numerous bad tackles on Harris. It did seem as if the goal we scored was offside (both from the kick and rebound) and sadly the McEveley challenge did seem a foul so they got those right on reflection but the rest of the night; it was basically a lucky dip what he gave with no idea whether he would let minimal contact go or give fouls and then crude fouls were dismissed. Bizarre performance is the best way I can describe them all tonight.

Crowd – Another crowd of 17,000+ (just). They brought very few too. Most of the noise was aimed at the officials and that seemed to be only thing to get United fans excited. The rest of the game it was more frustration and groans although for another chance free home performance; the crowd were quite patient. To watch another game without a win and without many chances or excitement, I feel United fans deserve medals. Clough can serve up more excuses and blame anyone but himself but if he wants crowds to stay with him and not start to turn on him (he gets a pass this year for last year’s remarkable turnaround) he has to show some managerial nous and flexibility. If he does not then the patience won’t last long nor will the numbers of support.

United had probably shaded the contest but in truth never totally convinced

Depressingly familiar.

Pretty much agree with ,although I don't think we were negative ,we are lacking confidence in front of goal ,and losing Ogrady was a major blow. McNulty although he did ok is clearly struggling with the mask. Our set pieces are poor ,we could really do with Ben Davies ,and when our best player Murphy simply doesn't turn up we are handicapped. We won the midfield ,Basham and Doyle did well but we need to get on the end of JCRs crosses ,there were plenty of near post ones tonight that weren't attacked. It didn't help that the referee was weak as piss and his linesman were just pathetic ,the result was undeserved but we do need to be more decisive in the final third.

Never looked like scoring, no men in the box. No Plan B. No Higdon despite him scoring two at MKD in the cup, in fact McGahey played up front instead for the last few minutes.

Agree with each rating, thought Basham had his best game, agree he's a centre half though. McEveley was outstanding apart from the tackle for the vital free kick, but he was the only one going for the ball I thought. Interested to see the video in due course. Harris did very well as did Flynn. McCarthy adds nothing.

Scougall is a young lad making his way and needs to develop a cutting edge if he plays in that key role.

Wonder how many will show up for Plymouth on Saturday,

Why would you want Higdon up front after his last game on Friday
Very harsh on McNulty you sound like like Clough Deadbat at least a 7.5
Basham was ordinary again in mid field McEverley was good no foul for the goal

Be honest Pedro, you shouldn't get 7.5 for running about in a mask and doing very little, still we all see things differently. Would like to see Adams in action but I don't think that will happen unless we're 3-0 up in a game, so that won't be any time soon.

My first thoughts when the ref gave the free kick which led to the goal was that he'd given it to us.

I'd need to see it again but there didn't seem to be too much protesting from the players.

McEveley was a magnet for the ball second half. He seemed to cut out everything. He was head and shoulders above everyone else on the pitch.

Agree with most of what was said earlier. Would disagree with Deadbat on JCR, he is the only player who looks like making anything happen. Yes some of his crosses are wayward but he put at least 4 into the 6 yard box last night and no one goes near post to take a chance, in fact half the time there is only one player in the box. There is never anyone there to put away the ricochets or rebounds.

I am not coming for the cup game, three 400 mile round trips in 11 days with very little enjoyment has done for me!!

Baxter slagged off for slowing the game down which I really didn't see last night or against Notts County. Campbell-Ryce is a worse culprit by far. Constantly stopping, twisting, turning until he either falls on his arse, scoops the ball behind the goal or over every player or cannot beat the first man. This is always due to his inability to take on a man and beat him and it becomes increasingly more frustrating each time it happens. Flynn should be in place of JCR. He and McCarthy are the two I have a real problem with being in the team.

I've very much in the 'pro-Clough' camp if there is such a thing however I do agree that he's got to mix it up.

In all fairness we played alright, we were up against a promotion rival in MK & on another day we steal the 3 points rather than them but at the moment we go out with a mentality/system/set-up to try 'not to lose' a game & nick a 1-0 whereas with the players at our disposal we should be going out to win games & be on the frontfoot. (it's becoming all too repetitive saying that)

Teams have figured us out that if you press us high we struggle & rely probably too heavily on Murphy & JCR to create abit of magic

Frustrating is the word to describe United at the minute

Karl Robinson's comments:

Robinson said: "We didn't deserve to win. I've got to be honest and say that we weren't great.

"They're a very good side and we had to do one or two things at the end of the game. We rolled our sleeves up and we fight. I'm not ever going to apologise for my team fighting and putting their bodies on the line.

"Dele getting a goal again. This kid's just ridiculous! To score nine goals at 18 years of age. It's just scary. I think he's our all-time leading goalscoring midfielder from open play.

"I was a little bit disappointed with some of the bookings. I have to make one formal apology to Sheffield United because Will Grigg didn't give the ball back to them in the right manner. He got carried away and he's apologised to them already.

"I've got no complaints about Danny Green's red card because they were both blatant bookings.

"We've won after not being good and hopefully we can use that now to our advantage to go on from here.

On paper, within the formation selected I thought the line up looked decent.

I think we are all frustrated that we haven't won any of the last four home league games. But as an individual game against a team in good form, having won 6-0 the previous game, I think most of us would accept a performance where we looked the better team and produced the most chances. Let's see if that means progress, something to build on, despite the result, before we lose all patience and belief.

A shame that O'Grady couldn't last longer though. I'd hoped that he'd make us 'click'.

There is no point crossing into the box if the sole striker is outnumbered 4 to 1.

There is no point crossing to the near post if nobody ever gets there.

There is no point knocking the ball high upfield to McNulty if he is marked by two much bigger and stronger centre backs who buffet into him without any restriction or censure by the officials.

There is no point persevering with Plan A right until the 95th minute when it isn't working.

If Murphy is not making any headway we are in trouble frankly. Why didn't we switch wingers? Ryce was doing quite well but his crosses never found a man throughout. Say what you like about Higdon last Friday, last night he would have had far more presence in the box which is his stock in trade. In any case why not play him with McNulty and indeed McGahey up front, I was not against that idea at all. With 15 minutes to go we should have really competed for the win with more big men in the box, then toss it in and see what happens. Their 5 men defending the box had a field day.

Very fair comments from Robinson. I think he secretly wants the job. ;)

I think 0-0 would have been fair. I think they played for that and were quite comfortably doing so. They put on Afobe to try and nick something in the last half hour and did so. Fair play. On paper we're a tough place to come despite our moans. There were a few cynical moments but I've seen far worse e.g. Howard Wilkinsons' Leeds team wins hands down.

I've just seen the highlights and have to say we were poor defending their goal.

The free kick was central right on the edge of the area. We formed just a 4 man wall believe it or not, with three individual players separately sharing space with a Dons player. The kick was placed right where the Dons player moved from and if you watch the three separate United players they were on the move.

I ask why we didn't have a full wall of at least six players and why we didn't place a player right behind the Dons lad?

I had assumed our wall had jumped and the ball had gone under, but in fact there were holes a plenty and the kicker found one. Poor, very poor. Suicide in fact.

Great save but poor goalkeeping in choosing the number in the wall. Can I change my rating for Howard please?

Basham was ordinary again in mid field McEverley was good no foul for the goal

Tend to agree about Basham in midfield, he looks much more comfortable at centre back. I'd also argue for a team that is attempting to play a passing game you can't have Doyle and Basham in the same midfield, especially with Scougal playing as the third 'un in the hole. When all are fit I'd go Doyle-Wallace-Baxter, of those currently available I'd have Reed for Wallace. Clough's got to put players in that can pick a pass and unlock the door, Doyle and Basham aren't going to do it and Scougal while he has some qualities as a footballer isn't that type either.
