Were 16 games in. Haven't got a striker. Keep playing 4-6-0 formation. We only managed a 1-0 win at Doncaster and are a massive 3pts off 2nd with just the 1 game in hand.

I'm utterly disappointed at the inept board of directors that clearly aren't capable of employing a managerial team capable of winning every game 5-0.

Its beyond a joke.

.. Well it would be nice to win at least one game 5-0 ;) ...

While yes we are 3 points behind 2nd place but you have to remember our poor goal difference! It might cost us promotion end of the campaign. So when we are on top of a game like Yeovil for example we shouldn't be happy taking just a 2-0 win when we could have easily won by 3 or more.

We are doing just what Wolves did last season.

Start slowly (with quite a few different players aka: Kenny Jackett)

They grew into the season and just got better - we are doing exactly the same.

Wouldn't be surprised to see us win the league in EXACTLY the same way as they did.

Massive tongue in cheek to original poster btw ;)

I think we need to nail this, because it's said quite often and it's a bit of a myth.

How often has a team lost out on promotion on GD? When did it last happen?
With our luck we will miss out on promotion on goal difference, with Swindons/ Bristol City goal difference +10 more then our own, you might as well see them 4 points ahead, even if we win our game in hand we will still be below them. Also there should be no excuse not to better our self as a team, our goal difference at the moment will be no help to us if it does go down the wire.
Man City won the prem on goal difference a few seasons ago so it can happen.

To be fair pinchy i can't remember when the last time it did happen,so it's nailed on to happen for us then isn't it! It's the blades way:D

Not to mention quarter finals of the league cup. :)

The pigs pipped us on goal average in 51/52. If we hadn't missed a penalty & beat them 8-3 who knows?

It's disgusting, with all the money we have we should be beating teams like Doncaster 25-0 with just six players...............:tumbleweed:,

To sum up then: It happens once in a blue moon but we'll be the next to suffer - It's the Blades Way. I can understand that view!

I'm still not bothered about the GD though. We're going to gradually exert our superiority on this league, and I include those above us in that, world-beaters though they are.

Interestingly, we had exactly the same number of points at this stage in 2011-12 when we ended up with 90.

I suspect 90 would be enough this time round :-)

We'll be the next to suffer what ?
If you mean some one scoring the only goal of the match from outside the penalty box, I think we've suffered enough already....

But at least this one wasn't against the run of play...........;)

Get a striker in on loan for the season who can hit the ground running (O'Grady) and we'll win the league.

If we'd had some ambition this season and signed a prolific striker in July, we WOULD have been winning the League !!
Yes .... we're in a decent position now but where would we have been IF we had a decent striker from the first game. Look at the points we've dropped that we shouldn't have if we could score goals in more than ones !! That, my dear chap is what most Blades are pissed about .... o_O
UTB & FTP

Didn't we go up on goal difference over Hull in 1984? Was living in Leicester and seem to remember listening to the radio waiting for updates from Burnley. Hull needed to win by three margin to oil us. They were 2-0 up early on but didn't manage to score any more. Nervy stuff.

I think with the number of injuries we've had this season that have meant we've had to change team i think we have done well.
Couple of additions on jan and a settled team and we'll be flying

Agreed, and the other myth is that a great GD is 'worth an extra point'. This clearly isn't true - A superior GD means nothing if you finish one point below your rivals!

However the low GD is a symptom of our narrow wins. My contention is that you can't win promotion on narrow wins alone - the margin for error each game is too big (see Barnsley, Leyton Orient). Putting away a few teams more comfortably would do us the world of good!

Goal difference would worry me more if there was only a few games left to play but if we can beat the top teams then the goal difference shouldn't matter in the end...I know it's a big but, but I'm sure we will only get better as the season progresses and let's face it we are only 3 points of second, playing not very good football so far and not playing with a recognised forward for a lot of the season.

So UTB and FTP.

playing not very good football so far
I agree with most of what you say but not this.

I think we've played some good stuff in a lot of the games,it's just penetrating the defence what we struggle with imo,the football has been allright until we get to a certain point,if we get this sorted then we're not far off at all.

So to sum up why this season has been such a let down:
3 points off automatics and we're still in November.
Quarter final of League cup having beaten West Ham.
Bigger crowds home & away than our massive neighbours.
Can it possibly get any worse.
I think you'll find the OP is a bit tongue in cheek,we're not in a bad position no,but things can get worse and they will if we stay in this league for any longer, which i think if we can just be a bit more positive we could really give some teams a good hiding.

It was in 1949-50. We had played all our games and Wendy needed to beat Spurs or draw 0-0 to pip us on goal average. Had it been a 2-2 draw then we would have gone up. The match ended in a 0-0 draw

The following season Wendy tried to sign Jimmy Hagan to save them relegation on a record transfer fee but Hagan turned them down. Wendy failed to stay up

In 1951-52 we beat Wendy 7-3 and 3-1 but we finished in 11th in the table and Wendy went up as champions

I hope your right because i think this season is our best chance of getting out of this shit division and start the ball rolling to eventually get back to where we belong to be playing our football

That was goals scored. Our goal differences were equal.

I should have consulted my complete record book before posting. It was only a matter of feet away at the time.
