Sheffield United’s lowest moment last season came when they were heavily beaten at Gresty Road in February. The Blades were mired in the relegation place and looked hopeless. After the resurgent run of form under Nigel Clough saw them get away from danger and reach the cup semi final, United of course are nearer the top end this season. Indeed after a 1-0 win over the Railwaymen they are now well cemented in the top 6 places and only 2 points off second spot. It was the third win in a week for United and the third consecutive clean sheet.

The goal came from Stefan Scougall; his first of the season after great work from Jamie Murphy down the left hand side. United should have won more comfortably but Jose Baxter missed his spot kick after being fouled. 10 minutes stoppage time and a red card for Crewe were the other talking points in a game the away side thoroughly deserved to take the three points.
Manager Clough changed things against as he opted to ‘rest’ the outstanding player from the Yeovil game; Louis Reed and bring back fit again James Wallace. He also brought back Paddy McCarthy for Harrison McGahey and Jose Baxter came in for the unlucky Marc McNulty. Jay McEveley was back on the bench. Crewe had former Blade Fabian Brandy starting the game. He is currently on loan from Rotherham

United began the game well and were winning all the loose tackles and were keeping the ball well. They were on the front foot and penned Crewe back. Baxter had one chance blocked out and then a great opportunity saw Alcock’s shot after a cross from the right bounce into the ground and up against a post before rolling across the line and away. It was very unfortunate for the visitors but they continued to dominate the game with Doyle and Wallace winning the midfield and Campbell Ryce and Murphy seeing a lot of the ball out wide.

Scougall had a deflected effort saved and then two chances to cross were wasted. United had been well on top but poor service in the final third meant Crewe had not had to defend too many chances. Crewe had barely had an attack but then they did get forward and Cooper’s powerful shot was well saved by Howard who pushed the ball away. The first half came to an end not long after.

The second half started in similar fashion to the first with United well on top. Campbell Ryce had an effort wide and then Murphy got down the left and won a corner. It was all the visitors but they could not get the breakthrough. Wallace had a shot over and then a flurry of crosses came to nothing. Crewe had a rare break as Brandy got away but his deflected shot went wide and he was substituted soon after to ironic cheers from the Blades fans.

Finally United did get in front as Murphy sprinted from his own half and ran and ran going past two defenders, cutting inside and then playing in SCOUGALL who calmly sidefooted home with the keeper at the near post as the cross came over. It was the midfielders’ first United goal since Wembley and he celebrated towards the big Blades following.
United continued to have more of the ball even after the goal and at least did not sit back like they did at Bradford and went for the second.

Alcock knocked the ball into the box and Baxter got onto the through ball and was clumsily upended. It seemed it had to be a card of some sort as he was the last man but the referee chose not to punish the defender any further. Baxter took the kick and he hit it hard but it was a nice height and keeper Garratt pushed it away.
Basham took a knock to his head and had to be bandaged and Inman came off even worse and had to be stretchered off after a long delay.

As the game entered the final stages; United now were having to deal with a bit more pressure but Crewe could not fashion a chance as the two centre backs continued their dominant display.
United made a flurry of changes with McNulty on for Baxter and then soon after Reed and McEveley came on for the scorer Scougall and the stricken Basham.

McNulty got away from Ray and was clear akin to the chance at Bradford last week but this time his shot was too close to the keeper and hit his legs and went behind for a corner. It was another golden chance to seal the game but kept Crewe in it. Ray continued to remonstrate and was shown what seemed like a straight red card for his arguments with the referee. He maybe should have gone earlier for the foul on the penalty!

Now playing 10 men yet again (third time in four games); United tried to keep the ball for the closing stages. McCarthy made a superb tackle as Crewe had a rare chance just before the referee chose to add on 10 additional minutes after the earlier stoppage. United picked up a couple of bookings in this time and could have made it save with breaks for Campbell Ryce and Reed getting away but not testing the keeper. Crewe had one final chance but a long range shot was well wide and United could celebrate a perfect seven days as referee Bankes blew his final whistle around 5pm!

United – The word I would use is controlled. We dominated the game for the large part and had most of the ball. We defended well under little pressure and had the midfield battle sown up inside the first 5 minutes. They were poor but to be fair we started the game better than we have for a while and made sure we played higher up the field and pressed well. At times our passing was a bit sloppy and the final ball not good enough but everything up the final third was decent but then that last ball or lack of an option *Baxter poor) and no real centre forward to hit meant we looked a bit powder puff. Saying that we hit the post, missed a penalty and a one on one so still had more than enough to get a few goals. They had one shot which Howard saved well in the first half and I cannot recall being concerned that they might score (suppose it could happen) even in the massive amount of stoppage time added on.

The last week has seen us deservedly win three games and win them with minimum of fuss. We have kept three clean sheets and look better than we have been. It has not been scintillating but solid and the defence seems to be getting back to standards we set last season. I think Basham being there has helped and may have found his best position. I also think in a strange way rotating the team might have helped some stay fresh even thought I kind of one some settling down of the side.

The major concern is still that final third. We at times made poor decisions, made bad final balls or did not look dangerous enough for all the play we did have. It was the sort of game with decent options up top it could have been 3 or 4-0 but too often we did well until that final area. Crewe will argue other than the aforementioned chances we did not really hurt them and I would agree. It is an area we need to improve. I cannot see the point of us having Higdon or Porter if Clough does not think they are good enough against sides such as Crewe. I personally would move them on if that is the case (either loan or permanent) in January and look to sign 2 quality strikers to compliment McNulty (Baxter not a striker for me). We need someone with real pace who can get behind and then we need a target man who can actually win headers and hold it up/. I don’t think Porter or Higdon offer any of those qualities sadly. Maybe keep one as a back up but we need those 2 players with the attributes I have mentioned.

I feel Bristol and Preston will not drop many points and both have experience and goals. If we want to be amongst those two we need to invest in these players. Hopefully we can stay there or thereabouts up to Xmas and then push on if we can add such players and quality. There should be no reason if defence stays solid that we won’t be in and around top 6 but need to add.

However today was good and we were solid, professional and did what we needed. It was a deserved win and a decent performance with some good individual showings but more of a team showing. It was a better tempo from the start than in recent weeks and we were not slow to going.

Crewe – They had been on a great run winning three on the bounce after an awful start to the season but today they were never really at it although credit to United who controlled the game from the start. They did not win tackles in midfield and I felt today having the extra man actually showed (means we were light up top as mentioned) and Crewe never got a foothold in this area all game. They were probably not tested enough defensively although we did get behind a few times but going the other way they offered very little. I cannot recall other than the one shot them having a proper effort on goal and Howard we rather untroubled.

Brandy was really poor. He ran down some blind alleys and then became disinterested second half and was taken off. They of course have a lot of talented young players but today I can’t recall many of their players being a real threat. Credit to Steve Davis on what he has done there on such limited resources/small crowds. They will probably be in a relegation scrap this year though and don’t have much of a home advantage. Daft as it sounds I think they will give us a tougher game at the Lane than they did today as they have in seasons past.

Howard 7/10
– Had nothing to do. Hard to mark him but he did make one good save in the first half from a decent striker. Other than that he was untroubled.

Alcock 7/10
– Felt he improved from the other night and was more solid. He was on the front foot and was able to win his battle and was solid.

Harris 7/10
– His standards overall seem to be getting back to what he showed last season (bit of a blip the other night). He was down our side where we sat second half and I felt he was decent. He won the ball and got forward when he could.

McCarthy 7.5/10
– Like Basham thought he was very good and nice and solid. No nonsense and was able to do just the simple things well. Today his partnership with Basham was good although they had little pace to trouble us down the middle.

Basham 8/10
– Excellent today. He played well the other night and was solid but today thought he was outstanding. He won every header and was on the front foot all game. Got a nasty cut and came back bandaged but then had to go off right at the end. He looks a better centre half than a midfielder and for me I would leave him there and it is his shirt to lose now.

Doyle 7.5/10
– Won tackles, kept the ball and allowed us to have all the play in the central area. He just did his job. Has settled down into his role well and has been quite consistent this season.

Wallace 7.5/10
– I do really like him and if he can stay fit and play in the middle with Doyle then we will win the midfield a lot more than we lose it. We controlled the central area from start to finish and had so much more of the ball than them. He is combative, a nice passer and gets on the ball. He is a decent athlete too and overall is a solid midfielder at this level that I think can get better. Just needs to stay fit.

Murphy 7.5/10
– A few frustrating moments when he had a chance to get at the full back but he was a threat and maybe our main attacking threat all game. He made the goal with a superb run from his own half going at and beating two men and then patiently pulling the ball back to a shirt (why can’t we pick men out more rather than aimless crosses?)

Scougall 7/10
– To be honest alongside Baxter thought he was one of the poorer players and he was anonymous for long spells but had a nice period in second half where he became more involved and ended in him getting in the box to score a nice goal. His mark would have been one down without that though as he still is not contributing games or getting in good positions like he did last season (we need much more of him bursting into the box like he did for the goal; as he has two men behind him to cover).

Campbell Ryce 7/10 –
Started the game well and got down the flank to allow us to be dangerous down the right. He faded as an attacking force but he put in a great shift up and down and did a lot of the defensive stuff well today. His final ball still lets him down.

Baxter 5/10
– Thought he was poor and our weak link and I have defended him in the past. He did not really hold the ball that well and gave it away. Also thought effort wise he has to do much better in terms of chasing players down and offering a nuisance value. Did went the penalty but it was a poor one and a nice height for the keeper although a good save too.

Subs

McNulty
– Looked livelier than Baxter when he was on but missed a really good chance; a one on one with the keeper which he really ought to have scored.

Reed
– Come on for Scougall for the final 5 minutes and helped us keep the ball in the closing stages.

McEveley
– Came on for the injured Basham and headed a few balls away at the end. Decent player to have as a cover defender to play a number of positions.

Manager rating
– Clough 8/10 – I was unsure why he changed the side around again and felt it was harsh on Reed and McNulty who were two of our better players i the week. The defence changed again but he had to bring McCarthy back for McGahey so no issues with that. However maybe his freshening things up and squad rotation is working looking at the results and improved performances this week. We have deservedly and fairly comfortably won 3 games on the bounce. Maybe our squad depth is starting to have an influence. I do hope he can give some continuity to some degree but today the defence was as solid as it has been all season, the midfield controlled things and we won the game fairly easily I felt. We still have issues up top for me but hopefully in January we can address that.

Officials
– Not many bad challenges all game and the red was for arguing so hard to know what he said (the player felt he had been fouled but he had not as McNulty got clear). The penalty was straight forward but how did the player not get at least a booking (was last man although could argue he was going slightly away from goal) is beyond me and odd he went off then for a red card for arguing. The rest of the game he had little to really do as I say there were not many bad challenges. The 10 minutes at the end seems a little long as although there was the stoppage for the bad injury to their player; I am not sure it warranted that long even though there were subs and Basham also got injured. Seems standard we have to play 7-10 minutes extra. Wondering whether refs have been told to add on longer this season as does seem to be happening more than the standard 3 we always used to see? I think that is a good thing as stops teams time wasting and means the right amount of time is added on if players get injured etc.

Crowd/Ground
– Always handy to have a ground right next to the station! Poor crowd really with the big stand not even a third full I would say and the two tiny lego style stands behind the goal not even full either. Surely would have been better to give one end as they have in the past to Blades fans as we sold out our 1,700 allocation on the side stand. We were sat quite low down (stand not very high) and with the pitch right against the stand it was an interesting view if not one I normally prefer (sit high up in the South Stand at home) but gave you an idea of the speed the game is played at (seemed a lot quicker lower down). The United fans as always got behind the side and were supportive all game. Few chants for you know who but fortunately more in favour of current players. Enjoyed the ‘You’re just a s**t Campbell Ryce!’ aimed at the awful Brandy.

Day Out
– We got to Manchester around 10.30am and had a walk around the Football Museum (recommend it especially if you have young un’s) for a bit before settling down in the Northern Quarter having a few beers and watching the midday football amongst a lot of disappointed Man City fans. After refuelling (friend bought Prosecco and Poppadoms. Delightful!) at Piccadilly we got to Crewe around 2pm. Walked in and out of some horrendous boozers on the main road before eventually realising they were all awful and had a quick pint in the least busy one. Ended up in the ground just before kick off and then post game we did the reverse trip but straight back to Manchester. More beers in the same area and some good chat/banter about all things life. Well in reality it was hypothetical music questions : Super Furry Animals or Supergrass etc was about as intellectual as we got. Was woke up by my friend who was going onto Nottingham (could have not told me and I would be in Norwich this morning) but we got back around 10pm. My friend had no money and could not find his credit card for his taxi as he arrived home which was marginally better than me falling out of my taxi into the road as I bent over on my haunches to pay. A good day had by all though. No idea how much was consumed. I would guess 10-12 pints but it all was a bit of a blur (Oasis won that particular versus by the way) post 7pm. Getting too old for it!

That was pretty much how I saw proceedings DB.
Good point about the speed of the game. I was on row b and the view of Murphy leaving the hapless Tootle in his slipstream was worth the admission price alone :-)

Just missing a graph and some animations

We were on Row B too towards the end where we scored. When Murphy set off, it looked like the wrong choice, he had a very narrow gap to run at. Tootle just couldn't keep up and he didn't have the inconvenience of the ball to worry about.

On previous runs, Murphy went for the byline, this time he checked back and sold Tootle a proper dummy. Nice sidefoot across and Scougall couldn't miss, unlike JCR later.

Great to see Basham showing his worth. It's almost like we have a new player since he has been playing at centre half

Think you are very kind to Brandy ,he was much worse than really poor :)
I haven't seen it on the telly but the lads in front of me said the sending off was for pushing the ref in the chest ,must admit I didn't see it.
I was on row C ,the closest Ive been to pitchside for a long time ,and was surprised at how fast the ball travels and how little time players have in this division ,was very impressed with the control and speed of passing of Wallace and Doyle especially ,also Wallaces strength and talking. Scougall is like a ferret nipping away at defenders and unsettling them.
Great report DB

Our formation was again 4-5-1 with Wallace and Scougall to the side of Doyle. That's how we lined up when they had the ball. It may seem a minor detail, but I think it's important to understand especially the amount of miles that Scougall runs during a game.

He does drop down in line with the other two defensively, and deserves credit for the amount of times he manages to get into the box when crosses comes in. We tried playing a high line and aggressively and effectively closed down (Wallace and Scougall did great) their two deep midfielders, which meant they couldn't get their passing going.

Midfield at Crewe.jpg

When our crosses are coming in Scougall is always aiming for the first post even when we counter attack, and if you're going to be a target at the first post you have to be there early and that often requires good pace as well as extreme work rate and stamina. When we scored the winning goal, Scougall was actually on the ball very deep (37 seconds into the video below) before he gives it to Harris and starts running forward again. It's a fantastic run by Murphy, but it wouldn't have been a goal without Scougall also making his way into the box.

Scougall did loads of these runs, especially in the second half and although he still lacks a bit luck or form when he's on the ball, he must be credited for the amount of grass he covers.

When we scored the first goal vs Yeovil many noticed that the move started with Murphy and that it was Reed's shot that the keeper saved with McNulty knocking in the rebound. But who remembers that it was Scougall who ran onto Murphy's cross and gave Reed the ball? Watch the first 15 seconds of the video below and you'll see the small, but important part he plays in the goal. I think it would have been a easily cleared cross if it hadn't been for Scougall's ability to get first to the ball.

A couple of games ago a lot of posters wanted Scougall benched, but I'm glad that Clough has persisted with him and I think he will only get better the more he plays. Movement from midfield is vital in this formation and it's good to see that the team is starting to gel and players' good attributes are starting to get used at good effect.

The new Jamie Hoyland!

That is one fantastic run from Murphy - a few touches in it looks like the defender will intercept easily then he's away and into the box. That's alone impressive, but the calmness when in the box to wait for the right moment to pass to Scougs is great to see - very much like the Murphy at the height of last season.

Basham played well but really the quality of Crewe's attack was very poor, Brandy and Haber played out wide so any threat their was came down the flanks.Murphy was a threat throughout and wins my man of the match, constant threat, great run to set up Scouggs and worked his socks off!9/10

Deadbat, thank goodness you are a better reporter than a pundit. What a difference a week makes!

Since Basham went into the back 4 isn't it a fact the clean sheets have started? That helps the lad to realise he is a defender not a midfield box to box man. Maybe he just had to get it out of his system. Maybe we'll sell him next season for 2.5 million, who knows?!

What we should all realise is that players take time to settle at "big clubs", and whether we believe it or not, United are a big club relatively speaking.

Even Deadbat wrote off Murphy only a few months ago. We all learn lessons over the years.

Personally I always saw that Murphy had the ability, but needs the right encouragement from management, players and fans. He's one of those who needs an arm around him, so if anybody sees him in the street, put your arms around him.

Clough admitted earlier in the season that Murphy couldn't beat anyone all of a sudden, but that they kept playing him in the hope that he found form. I think he'll keep improving as the team settles further. On the whole I think things are looking very positive at the moment.

Who was utterly gash and did nothing but harm us as a team? Utterly justified and only a bit of banter.

To be fair S5, he only played 14 games, he certainly was capable, witness his first game for us. How did he do us nothing but harm ?, you could argue Doyle harmed us after his stupid unnecessary sending off against Fulham.
