Paddy McCarthy is believed to be on the loan radar of Sheffield United

Crystal Palace club captain Paddy McCarthy is understood to be on the radar of League One side Sheffield United for a loan move.

The centre-back is looking for game-time away from Selhurst Park and has been the subject of enquiries from Championship clubs too.

Boss Neil Warnock - a former Blade - could be key in a deal happening for the 31-year-old, which will see him go out and play up to six games.

McCarthy recently signed a new contract at Palace, and he could be the second defender to leave on loan, following Peter Ramage, who looks set to move to Barnsley until January.

I can see this happening if he wants game time to get back to some level of sharpness to contest a place back at Palace

Indeed - wouldn't on the face of it feel like a loan with a view to a permanent move. But would meet the Clough aim of getting in someone that could go straight in and is better than what we've got.

If true, very much a short-term thing - last week he signed a contract extension to the end of next season, so clearly NW still wants him involved at Palace (but presumably back fit)

Sheffield United will unveil Paddy McCarthy as their latest new signing this morning, The Star can confirm.

The Crystal Palace defender, who is poised to make his debut at Chesterfield tomorrow, travelled to South Yorkshire last night after agreeing to join on a month long emergency loan.

However, sources close to Selhurst Park, where former United manager Neil Warnock took charge five weeks ago, have indicated the arrangement could be extended until January if it proves a success.

The Premier League club are also thought to be subsidising a significant portion of McCarthy’s wages for the duration of his stay with Nigel Clough’s side.

United are known to have fought off competition from a host of Championship clubs to secure the 31-year-old’s services.

McCarthy, who started his career at Manchester City before representing Leicester City and Charlton Athletic, has made two appearances for Palace since August.

Both of those came in the Capital One Cup, against Walsall and Newcastle.

Good solid defender .should be outstanding at this level.will be a big miss when he goes back

This could be a quality signing. A Palace mate of mine says no way will we be allowed to keep him - all these years up here and he still doesn't understand the power of the draw of BDTBL:rolleyes:.

NW quoted in the Daily Mail re: McCarthy and Peter Ramage being loaned out:

"The problem is you can only have seven substitutes and I like my forwards, I do."

"Paddy is like anybody else, he's very important to the club and I think the club recognises that. That's why they given him a new contract. I think he needs games, there have been one or two clubs that have asked about him.

That's a decent signing if he plays to his usual standards

Could be a good signing. I think it all depends on how fit the lad is. If hes not upto speed (even at league 1 level) then we would be looking at having to sub a CB during a match. Not something that usually happens?

Wasn't he Palace's captain last season?

Great signing IMO. Not sure how fast he is though. If he takes McGahey's place, will we be a bit slow?

I'll translate:-
"When you bid for him, we want more than that".

Be very pleased about this loan
Reminds me of a Craig Short type of player - commanding and a leader :)

He's slow, but has looked strong, commanding and dependable when I've seen him.

Was Warnock at the celebration party? Was this move started there maybe?

Should prove interesting BB. McCarthy has a wealth of experience, and even if he's not the fastest, playing in the Championship and the Prem means he'll have learnt to cope with players who have pace. From memory I think he's non-nonsense, he imposes himself, and asks no quarter and gives none.
