Wonderful to see Woody again!

Remember seeing him score from outside the box against Leicester. Watching from part of the old cricket ground he bent the ball round the wall and the keeper never moved. You see it now but it must have taken a special player to have done that with the old ball. Class player.

I believe he scored twice from corners, against Newcastle in the League cup at the Lane and against Leicester in our season after promotion to the 1st division in 1971. An absolute class act

That keeper was Peter Shilton.

Boxing Day 1970. When Woody was about to take the FK at the Kop End, a firework exploded in the Kop, Woody took advantage of Peter Shilton being distracted by the noise and bent the ball round the wall with Shilton still frozen in shock!

I've enjoyed watching all the clips on Sheff U Tube

Not really surprising that the awards "best-ever player"," best-ever manager" etc all went to Blades from the modern area who are still alive. No disrespect to Harry Basset, but his achievements pale in comparison to those of our best-ever manager, John Nicholson, who won the FA Cup four times.

Amazing to see so many legends in attendance. Great to see that Warnock was invited and made the trip up so soon after a game, and Jags too. I wonder if McCabe and Warnock had a few words.

Sean Bean wasn't there but put a fantastic video up where he does an impression of Doyle's Lambeth Walk.

I've seen players knocked out cold blocking his shots, goals scored direct from corner kicks, he could hit a ball with both feet and he even scored a header once too, looks like he has lost a yard or two of pace going to the corner flag though ;) He really should have won many England caps just a shame Ramsey's teams never played with out and out wingers.

He wasn't a bad stand-in goalkeeper either

.

John Nicholson never managed the Blades. He was the club secretary. George Waller, the trainer and the captains (Nudger Needham for 1898, 1899 and 1902 League and FA Cup wins, George Utley for 1915 FA Cup win and Billy Gillespie for 1925 FA Cup) had far more say in tactics and team selections (The football committee decide on player recruitment and contracts). We didnt have a manager until Teddy Davison in 1932. John Harris should have got the award as our best ever manager but the trouble with public voting is that many of the voters do not realise the achievements made by Nudger Needham, Billy Gillespie, Jimmy Hagan and John Harris. That is why I didnt take part in the voting

Also scored direct from the corner for his first goal in the home game against Coventry in November 1971 (his penalty in the 2nd half was saved by Bill Glazier which denied him a hat trick) and in the home game against Norwich in January 1973

I did a 6 part article of Woody's goals and assists for Flashing Blade about 12 or 13 years ago. The highest number of assists by him for one season was 29 in the 1969-70 season (he also scored 21 goals)
What do you call yersen in fb then?
Are you Handsworth blade?
Regardless, I recall your excellent articles and the fact that briefly you were Woody`s brother in law.

Yes I am on FB (Peter Sharpe). Never used the pseudonym "Handsworth".

LSF, not me, is Woody's ex brother in law

Blimey I'd forgotten that ! Went in goal at home to Leeds after Hodgy broke his finger. We were struggling that season and Leeds were flying. They'd signed Mick Jones and we fielded Mick Hill in his place who scored the winner. Woody was outstanding in goal, saved some crackers. Jags eat your heart out

Also went in goal in the last 15 minutes against Newcastle in the League Cup in 1969, against Orient (last 5 mins) in August 1970, last 20 minutes at L**ds in Nov 1972 after McAlister was carried off unconcious and after Tom McAlister broke his leg in the home game against Man City in Oct 1973, 5 games and only conceded one goal which was an own goal by Bill Dearden in the Man City game

trust billy to bugger up a perfect record ;)
I remember the goal well, a harmless looking ball into the box that was going to the far post that Woody had it covered but Billy (probably thinking that there was a City player ready to attack the ball) tried to head the ball away for a corner and as soon as the ball was going into the near post, Woody changed direction, got a hand to the ball but didnt have enough to tip it over the bar

What was he doing there anyway. He was the centre forward!

Thought that too! He must have been in the box for a Man City corner, then the corner was half cleared etc (just a theory as I do not remember the events just before Dearden tried to head the ball clear)

He wasn't the tallest was he? You would have thought we would have kept him up front when we defended corners.

my first memory of woody ! it was an FA youth cuptie against notts forest at the lane we beat them 5-1 and woody scored one of his acreamers into the kop goal we played man utd in the next round (semi final) at old trafford lost 2-0 willi morgan was the star of that team besti was too old to play and morgan was a real lookalike of his i was at that game and as happened a few
years ago (maguire and co) they were too good for us we have only reached semi final 3 times bristol city being the other and lost that one too sounds just like the first team does it not

When I first started attending at the Lane, Woody was in his prime, just a hint of a shooting chance and you knew there was a good chance of him finding the back of the net. We have had a few since then who can crack a ball but none with the consistency and accuracy of this man, some of his goals were absolute beauties. A real treat to have seen him Saturday, restored to something like good health. A true great at the Lane. Keep off the fags though Woody.

Interesting but the George Best "lookalike" cannot be Willie Morgan because he is older than Bestie also his first club was Burnley (from 1960 to 1968)

you may be right but i have always thought the lookalike was morgan was told at the time besti was too old but as i now have checked he was same age as woody so was able to play . having already starred for man utd first team that maybe the reason he didnt play they were too good for us anyway
