Gus looked lost when he came on at Spurs.

He needs a move back to either our level or back to the Netherlands where he can get some minutes and have an impact.

He's no use to a team that doesn't have the ball and one that does, at that level, will want someone who can get about the pitch more.

It's a nostalgia signing like when we brought James Beattie back who was nowhere near as good as he was first time round.

I'd hazard a guess he's not all that big a fan of football, certainly the energetic part of it. He's a very talented player but he only shows that in spurts and is only suited to teams like us and Coventry where one flash of skill goes a long way to masking the laziness and disinterest he's more capable of showing.

I'm not a fan of Illi, think he's a mercenary first and a footballer second but he's a cracking player with bags of natural talent who works his nads off to be that top player. Maybe the player Gus could have been with a lot more work and dedication, rather than the overweight bit part player that he is.

He'll be great in those Legends games when he's surrounded by similarly out of shape ex pros in a few years.

Perhaps the most inconsistent Blades player I've ever seen.

And by inconsistent, I mean inconsistent within the same game.

He could play a world class, defence splitting pass and then spend the next ten minutes bumbling around the pitch, fouling people and blindly running with the ball into crowds of opposition players.

It was bizarre at times.

I could never work out if he was lazy, didn't give a fuck or was just a bit thick.

He's not worth the hassle, move on.

I raise you a Stephen Quinn, he could run past 2 players with great skill, then fail with a 5 yard pass at the end of it. He was the ultimate ‘yin and yang’ footballer.

Like I said and many others, he’s a signing for when they are belatedly relegated back to the championship next season. I think some people laughed at that idea, but it’s completely true.

Brain deane 3rd spell springs to mind.

Although I do remeber him coming on for that 1 game back in the 3rd spell and very nearly scoring with an header I think? That would have been poetry.

It's a move that only made sense for 2 out of the 3 parties.

Winners
  • Blades - get a half decent fee for a player likely to leave anyway
  • Hamer - gets an increased bank balance and decent contract

Losers
- Cov - Get a player who's unlikely to be a star player for them at the level or have the impact they require and cost a fair sum to sit on the bench all year

Only benefit Cov may have is he could still be a standout for them back in the Champ if they are relegated and maybe he's worth having for that reason when they inevitably lose a few who do well this year

It’s a signing that makes less and less sense for Cov the more you look at it.

To be fair to Hamer I think we’re going to see a lot more footballers tail off in their late 20s because of how much quicker and stronger players need to be now, and how many more miles on the clock they’re wracking up before they reach 30.

I think it’ll be a while before we see another player like Jags or Billy knocking around at nearly 40.

This led me to googling oldest Prem players, which then led me to oldest ever players, which then (stay with me) led me to John Budgie Burridge. Flipping heck! What a career. Just have a look at his Wiki page.

James Milner and Jamie Vardy say hello 👋🏻

I’m a huge fan. He’s absolutely ambitious but I don’t see any indication that he’s more about the money than the average footballer.

Every step he’s taken has been upwards. If he’d naffed off to Saudi then I’d agree.

I do agree on Gus. Love him too, but he’s more frustrating to me. He’s all about the fun times, not the hard yards. Surprised Saudi didn’t come calling - he’d be ace there and he’d retire even wealthier.

Interesting concept. Suggests he is only interest in the highest pay and then decided a good arena to try and apply that to was to become a professional footballer. As JD mentions, he's simply sought to get to the top of the game.

Of course, he might end up in the third division next season, but...

He's lost interest in football which I said last season. He wanted a final pay day move abroad but nothing came in so he ended up taking as much money as he could with Coventry. There was no appetite to go back there but it was financially his best move. I'm stunned Coventry went in for him to be honest.

Not like Gus to lack appetite.

I don't think it can be disputed that losing Hamer leaves us with a creative hole.
One that is in the process of being filled with playing slightly differently and with different players.

He has the capability on his day to be the best midfielder in the championship. First season down he displayed this consistently, often seeing a goal or assist contribution that decided a game. And gaining player of the season in the championship.
Even last season he still managed 12 assists and 5 goals despite having an injury for 6 weeks and the team starting the season very poorly.

But it is also clear that his effectiveness overall in games seemed to drop last season and his fitness was that bit less than the season before.
Which is still not where you want key midfielders to be. Or any key player really.

I must admit that given his move this summer and presumably desire to go back to Coventry and step up to the PL. I'm surprised it appears that his fitness levels are either no better than last season or potentially worse.

I don't think it's a given he will go out on loan in January. I also don't think it's a given he would come back here if it did. Sure he left with good relations and liked the club by all accounts. But it would depend on wage contributions and where his desire to move would be. I think he might see it as the time to go back to Holland if he moves next.

He'll be a millionaire.

Stanley Matthews played for Stoke against Fulham in a first division match on his 50th birthday in February 1965.
Oh I know there's been plenty older, its just because the post I was replying to said it'll be a while before we currently see anyone knocking about at nearly 40...when there are actually several!

I meant from the current crop of players in their 20s. I don’t think anyone that’s played in the 2020s will be playing elite level football beyond their early 30s.
