In the end it was a comfortable afternoon and a fairly easy win with United completely dominating most of the second half to see off a poor Lincoln side. The game did not begin that way though and Lincoln were the better side for the first 30 minutes and had a few chances, as we began slowly, lacking ideas or penetration. It seemed more of the same (poor, slow football where teams where sharper and looked more of a threat) and we looked totally clueless with laborious sideways and backwards possession then ended normally with an aimless hoof. Not sure, outside of perhaps Peck and Kitchen, anyone played well. Lincoln grew in confidence and had all the efforts. To be fair to the Blades, the final 15 minutes we did have some efforts (Rothwell wide and Brereton Diaz) albeit from range and finally got the ball forward more quickly. The goal came from one touch stuff and the ball moved around quicker with McCallum sending a good ball in and Bamford, who had not been in the game, cleverly flicking home. We ended the half on top but were fortunate to lead.

Second half we were in total control. We came out and pinned them back with Rothwell missing a good chance and the football was quicker and played forward more. Bamford was influential and almost dropped into a ten role and the two wide men became much more influential. Chong had a decent 20 minutes and scored a decent team goal, after good work from Rothwell, who was much improved. The third, like the first, came from a quicker ball into the box, before the defence was set. The cross was good from Brereton Diaz but the finish was sublime from Bamford, who had his best half of the season and looked more like the player from last season. That was game, set and match. Changes were made for both teams but the final part of the game saw United see things out without much worry – with only one brilliant Cooper save from close range after a good ball from ex Blade Ogbene. Lincoln had not threatened at all up to this point in a very one-sided half. United controlled a game for the first time this season and were worthy winners as they played the ball quicker and as a collective, played higher up the field. Lincoln, who themselves were rather direct ran out of ideas and were well beaten. Despite an extremely officious official who was fussy and inconsistent, the Blades were able to get a much needed three points.

It was not a brilliant game. The standard was poor for large periods with some comedy moments of football from both teams. Balls being sliced behind, out of play and given away but United stepped it up for the second half and showed quality and experience to put the Imps away. They are a big powerful side but technically look bereft of ball players and I think will be nearer the bottom places. Credit United, and Wilder. A sluggish start to say the least but the goal kind of sparked them into life and then buoyed by this, put the foot down to take the victory. Wilder needed it after the dreadful end to the last set of games and some more bizarre comments in pressers, which had left a number doubting his future at the Lane. For now, his team responded and put in a decent performance to take the win and see us around half way. Two long trips away this week will be tricky, but if could win just one of them we will remain here before two games to come at the Lane.

I still have concerns over the fitness and conditioning (Phillips somehow injured over the break?) and we lacked pace and athleticism again but we did what we had to today. I am pleased we started to play the ball quicker (after the tepid build up first half) but there are still big improvements to make in terms of our style and way of playing. Better teams might have been a few goals to the good before we scored. There were pleasing individual performances and some return to form for a few – also good to see some returning players coming back from injury.

___

Cooper 7/10 – Had a few shots coming in first half and lucky to see one header just go over his bar after terrible marking but he dealt with what he had to. His kicking was poor again (struggling to find half way and kicked two out) but made a superb save near the end from point blank range. Not sure how he kept this out?

Choudhury 6/10 – Thought he did ok today and maybe the best he has been. Not outstanding and still slow to react to things but did get to the ball more than he has done and defended ok. They got down his side to begin with but he improved as the game went on. Worrying he was still unable to complete a full game again though.

McCallum 6.5/10 - Started poorly, with a few loose touches and then got booked for a clumsy foul that could have cost us when Reach only hit Cooper’s midriff. Like Choudhury, he improved as the game went on and actually put a few good balls in, as he got up and down. Set up the second with a great ball and a few other decent balls. They hardly had an attack second half as both full backs played higher up. Won a lot of aerial stuff which was handy as they were a big side and used long throws/diagonals a lot.

Tanganga 4/10 – Thought he was our weakest player today. He won a few tackles/headers but too often gambles and gets caught out. Physically the big lad was able to shake him off a few times and completely lost him on the header. Three times in succession he passed it straight to them. Technically he is awful most of the time and to say he does not impose himself, I am still not convinced by him. Harsh booking when he seemed to be grabbed first (shirt pull) on the corner. Went to right back but left his man way too much room. When your worst player (today at least) is captain, that is a bit of a worry.

Kitching 7/10 – Our best defender today and used the ball well when he had it but did what he had to. Thought we were not engaging physically to begin with but he set the tone by winning a few headers/tackles. He actually used the ball well and tries to move it forward into midfield but often he kept being given the ball and it should be others kickstarting moves. He has been a solid signing so far on the whole. Nothing remarkable but does get stuck in and at least compete.

Rothwell 6/10 – Thought he was dreadful first half, like many others, barely seeing any of the ball and when he did, he went backwards and sideways. Seemed to not be in the game at all and they ran through the middle a fair bit although they were direct so missing midfield out but no excuse for us doing the same. Had one decent shot and then improved after this and thought second half he played quite well. He drove forward and was able to move it on quicker. Should have scored of course but then he set up the second and seemed to threading balls through or always looking to be more positive.

Peck 7/10 – Our stand out player first half and he was always getting stuck in, nicking loose balls and trying to be the one driving us. A few poor passes or touches but did not hide. Most of our better things came from him, as we were second best the first 30 minutes. Second half much the same, he looked to try and play forward passes, although Rothwell was much more involved. Bamford dropped back a fair bit and this helped us dominate the ball. A few slalom runs and seemed another that was unlucky to be booked (looked like he got pulled down?).

Brereton Diaz 6.5/10 – A mixed bag. Did some decent things and maybe the best he has played since he came back but he takes an age to do things and is painfully slow to move/get on the ball. When he did have the ball, a few nice touches and pieces of skill but he just does not have the pace to hurt teams. Couple of shots on goal but weak finishes when he should be doing better – but he was involved in some decent things and his early cross set up the second. Not convinced him and Chong, playing as inverse wingers works but they did swap a fair bit. Both kept coming onto stronger foot.

Chong 6.5/10 – First half he was given a fait bit of the ball but seemed like he was very predictable, as he kept coming onto his left foot and trying to come inside. This made it easy for Lincoln but he did put a few decent crosses in. HE was another who lacks the pace and aggressiveness to really hurt defenders and kept coming inside. I thought neither him or BBD were really hurting them but second half they both improved but particularly Chong. He became more direct, ran at them and went inside and outside. He had a few good runs before he got on the Rothwell pass to score (ironically may have not been going in – hit keeper and could have been a cross?) Better showing but would prefer Donovan to be honest but maybe Wilder thought he would be better used when they tired?

Cannon 5/10 – Thought he was largely anonymous sadly (as was Bamford till he scored!) Too often the ball comes off him or it does not stick and he is painfully weak in any kind of challenge. Not sure he had many touches first half at all. Did try and make runs and I suppose the direct stuff does not suit him but then when we play it to him, he struggles to hold it up or link play. Not sure him and Bamford have much of an understanding and feel we need either physicality or pace in a strike pairing. Second half became a bit more involved but did not have any efforts at goal, create anything meaningful or even really be part of many moves we made. Just a nothing sort of player – would love us to try and get some money back in January.

Bamford 8/10 – 8/10 seems high for someone who that up his goal who was as poor as Cannon, and not in the game most of the first half but his second half he was excellent. First half, it was not helped by our complete lack of service or play into the front two (still think they should move more and present more) but despite being way off the pace, as he had been much of the season, you know he can find a moment – unlike Cannon. The goal was a lovely flick and classic centre forward play. After this, he gained confidence and then became involved in many of our good moves second half. He dropped back into a 10 role and was more influential. Held it up, used it well and came back to retrieve possession a few times. He then scored a sumptuous third goal for us, which was only a half chance.

Subs –

McGuiness 6/10 – Some may have been surprised by the change but we did not have a right back on the bench (where is Doherty and Shackleton – these two like Phillips seem to be unfit despite not playing, or were they just not chosen?). I think Wilder was concerned about their physicality and that their route back was a set piece goal or something coming from a header so it proved a decent change. McGuiness did well and actually looked more comfortable than Tanganga did in this position.

Donovan 6/10 – The game was crying out for him first half and if we had not scored, surely, we would have put him on at half time? However, the goal saw us leave it at the break and we improved so we did not need to call on him. Despite Chong and BBD doing some of things second half, I still would want him starting and he might be getting a bit fed up, as he was been one of our most dangerous players this season. Did ok when he came on but at this point, the game was just being played to the finish.

Campbell – Not sure he had many touches; he chased down a few balls forward but at this stage we did not need to attack much.

One – Nice to see him back and get some time against the club he was on loan too. Blocked a few clearances and put himself about. Offers us something difference (pace and power) wide or up top. Want him to see more time moving forward over Cannon and Campbell ideally.

Riedewald – Just brought on to help see things out but the game was already decided.

Manager Rating: Wilder 7/10 – Three points, a clean sheet and a comfortable win – in the end. He will have been happy to see of a tricky fixture, especially when some pressure was building on him and the team. We were awful the first part of the game and you felt nothing had changed and wondered what we had been working on/the plan but the goal really gave us a big lift and the win was never in doubt after this. Credit to whatever he said at the break. Been very critical of him this season for not impacting the team after the breaks but he clearly got them up the field, seemed to tweak things with Bamford playing more withdrawn, saw us dominate the ball and we went through them a number of times, both centrally and out wide. It was played forward quicker with less touches and individually/collectively and tactically we hugely improved after the break.

---

Lincoln – Started the game well and were the much better side. They looked to get it forward with big strikers (House and Street!) and utilised the long throws/free kicks with Reach taking most of these. They had 5 shots to 0 and were much more likely the first half hour. Missed a good headed chance and Reach will have been disappointed with his free kick too – he normally is excellent on these and in an ideal place for him. They looked up for the fight and were quicker and more physical. They pressured the backline and seemed to get to the ball first. We had not really tested the defence at all but then when we did, they showed weaknesses. The balls into the box wee not defended well at all and they did not react to players attacking the ball – all three goals saw players from United get to the ball first to finish. Thought the defenders looked slow and clumsy and we moved them about and found gaps. Second half, they were never in it and meekly surrended. They made changes but the game was up really by this stage. In the end, well beaten and will be frustrated they did not get a lead to start the game. It might have been different of course then. Overall, looked a fairly limited side that relied on throws, knock ons and set plays. Maybe that is harsh as they have done well this season and had some impressive wins. Lack quality and perhaps an out and out striker to nick the goals. I think they will struggle and be in a relegation fight and when injuries occur, will lack the depth of other sides. Home games will be so important to them of course.

Opposition player of the match – Street was lively early on and a handful but most of their chances seemed to come from Reach’s crosses/throws! Ogbene did ok when he came on and nearly made a goal with the ball in, that led to the Cooper wonder save.

Opposition weak link – Thought the centre backs were slow and Bamford showed his class against the big but immobile Bradley. McGrandles was booked and nearly got a second yellow as he struggled with Peck for long periods – before being withdrawn.

Referee – Josh Smith. Premier League ref isn’t he? Showed as he became fussy and totally inconsistent. He booked McCallum, rightly so for the foul on the edge of the box but then let them off for two or three cynical fouls (on Bamford and BBD) as we broke. He then booked McGrandles for a lesser offence and seemed to indicate it was a totting up – but this was more for the team than him? After this he seemed to decide to book players every sort of 10 minutes, so you could get away with fouls if you did it just after he had booked one! Thought he was making it up as he went along. The yellow for Tanganga – when it was Elerewe who was the aggressor. The Peck one also seemed like definite contact but to book him for diving seemed really harsh? He started booking players randomly near the end and there were so many soft free kicks and it became stop start. It was not a really dirty game at all and lacked fluency in terms of passing/technical play but his performance did not help at all.

I'd swap Tangangas and Choudurry scores. Tangy was a lot better than you say - battled all first half with their big lump and I thought won the battle. Choudurry just isn't a right back, first half score for him was 2/10. Matt Doherty where was he?

I dont think anyone put in a less than average performance today .

No one was great no one was poor

Ref was wank

Tanganga’s yellow card really was ridiculous. The ref gave both of them a warning but after that Tanganga did absolutely nothing wrong and all the blame lay with the Lincoln defender. I think he’d said to himself that if anything happens now I’ll book both.

Tanaganga was trying to get away from their player who was grabbing him and following him around. A joke he got booked for that.

Another match where the ref seems to dish out a yellow card to us early doors but not the opposition for similar fouls.

Wasn’t he just. The Peck booking looked a laughably bad decision from where I was sat and the linesman infront of John street must have missed 5/6 offside calls. Ogbene must have been 5 yards offside late on and no flag.
Incidents like the Peck one drive me mad. He’s beaten the player and he’s through on goal, what does he gain by diving? A free kick in a low percentage area?

It’s maddening, even playing the game at amateur level you know people don’t take a dive there.

I'd agree with the score for Tanganga who seemed to be all over the place, forgetting he had been moved to RB when McGuinnes came on. Of course Ryan Oné got blamed by Wilder for going walkabout rather than our captain not marking his man giving Lincoln a late chance well saved by Cooper.

Most refs clearly haven’t played football since
Junior school, must barely watch the game and have zero understanding of basic physics based on some of the shite they come up with

Bizarre game of football. We were dreadful for 40 minutes, 30 was generous DB. Lincoln were the better side and missed chances. Then we swop our wide men. Not sure if it was by accident or design. BBD and Chong suddenly become different players. Lincoln are the first team this season not to change tactics at half time enabling us to start the second half well. Chongs goal, agree it was a cross but we'll take the deflection, killed off any revival from the oppo. They fell away after that and our confidence grew.

Proper goal for the third first time cross into box and excellent volley brought a much welcome 3 points. Bamford was the difference begtween the teams.

Agree that BBD slows the game down too many times. Canon for all his energy lacked the pace to get onto a number of through balls. Bamford through the frustration of not being played in dropped deeper into a 10 and we looked better for that.

Tanganga was a mixed bag some last minute clearances and headers away but his distribution was dreadful. He was at fault not One for letting them get in for their late chance. One should have been left and Donovan right to see out the game. Seriki is a huge miss.

Good day for the manager if its true the owners were watching. Unfortunately post match he was morphing into 3 games in a week syndrome. The way to get out of the current malaise is to continue to play on the front foot as we did for the last 30 minutes today. No excuses on fitness now they've had 3 weeks off.

Fair report, first 30 mins we were awful and I thought we’d get a lesson from league 1 Lincoln (one of the most one dimensional teams I’ve seen in a long while).

When we decided that 10 passes along the back line, followed by a punt to their number 15’s forehead wasn’t going to work, we improved a lot.

Probably the most ‘Culture carriers’ I’ve ever seen on a football pitch together between the 2 sides. It was like overseas scouting has never existed.

Bamford was playing 10 all the game. He was always dropping off in the first half, but since we had no coherency of any sort of approach we simply didn't get the ball to him.

The first time we did, where we finally got him the ball in some space in that Didsy zone, he started the move off which led to the first goal which he finished well. Second half he found more ball in that area and we looked much better. Superb display from him overall and he works so much better as a 10 than a target man. Great first time finish for his second.

Thank you Deadbat as ever a sound and accurate summary. But I would mark Cooper down two points for not wearing a bloody cap in the first half!! Why do so few keeprs wear them now??

What a strange game. The first 30 mimnutes were painful and if Lincoln had been more aggressive & positive would have scored. If they had then the crowd would have turned. On such fine margins careers hang.

Thereafter we improved and second half looked a division better than them. Several encouraging performances - Peck, Bamford, Chong, Kitchen, to name a few.

I also thought the movement and formation worked well. Much more fluid than I've seen for a long time. I really want to see One get some proper game time now. He could offer everything that the two TCs don't.

Overall a good day out and back to London by 7:30pm for once.

No excuses on fitness now they've had 3 weeks off.
first half I thought BBD did slow it down and made the same predictable move to cut in to his right and pass sideways/backwards so many times. Seemed more effective second half , in fact did they swap over before the end of the first half? Seem to remember him on the right for a couple of moves and getting crosses in when we were still playing towards the away end?

Yes change happened around 40 minute mark.

Good write up Deaders. It's great to be back isn't it?

I was expecting the three week break to manifest some decent changes for the better in our strategy but the first forty minutes we were abysmal once again. I thought recently-promoted Lincoln would be easy meat but they matched us punch for punch (we didn't even punch until Rothwell's speculative effort). It was typical United with shitloads of slow, unproductive passing sideways and backwards in the central third and nothing going forward. Peck did his best, Chong was like Bambi on ice and the rest of the team timid and wasteful. The goal was typical 'feed Bamford and he will score' stuff which we had failed to do for forty minutes. Like Billy Sharp, if you find him with four passes in the zone during the match he has at least three attempts on target and one goal in that. Why don't we do that more often? He's a striker, FFS! Instead we busied ourselves for almost an entire half 'possessing' but not 'advancing' and 'creating chances'. Lincoln pressed us, the 'play out from the back' schtick is over now because we don't have the capability to cleverly get out and round pressing players.

Second half for me was different gravy. The midfield two were more active and Wilder switched BBD and Chong just before HT and they stayed there in the second half but for me BBD is still not in an advanced position as I feel he is better at (possibly front three in a 4-3-3 or a 3-4-3 where he was great at Forest) but we played in their half a lot more and stopped Lincoln breaking fairly well, although we weren't at the best until McGuinness came on to counter their long ball over the top (which Tanganga and Kitching had massive problems with) and moved number 5 out to RB that we looked a lot more robust in the backline. Don't get me wrong, I think McGunness is shit getting under the ball at the cross but he added height because they had Tanganga and Kitching for breakfast a few times punting it long with Cooper out quick to punch away thankfully.

Our second goal for me came from two players I would have subbed out at HT. Chong finished well and Rothwell found him brilliantly but both players have 'WILDER SIGNING' stamped all over them. Both are sub optimal. Chong is clumsy and wasteful and Rothwell still is ale-house. We can do better and Philips's expected absence due to injury today leaves him as the best option to play alongside Peck versus Reiderwald (coasting) and Arblaster (will never recover the brief flashes of promise) in midfield. The third was pure Bamford ... you see him in space and you find him and he does the biz.

Did we deserve the win today? Absolutely. 3-0 spells it's own tale over how better we are overall against a developing Div 1 side. Did we make it easy? No. I am of the reluctant opinion that despite the win, Wilder is on thin ice. He is out of ideas what to do with this array of players and with the ongoing style of paceless, non-advancing play, the endless unproductivity coming from passing it to-and-fro across the back, the inability to turn possession into product in the box we are a poorer bet than any of the teams around us and above us to end up even in the playoffs.

Maybe it is time to say without fear, Wilder Out.

Thanks Big D. Nice to read a balanced view. I didn’t go. For reasons set out in the match thread. I did however speak to two people who did whose opinion I respect. One who knows Wilder pretty well. Both said we were shit for 40 minutes with the same old same old slow sideways and hoof. Both said Lincoln must have gone in at the break thinking it simply wasn’t their day. Second half we played better. One opinion being abandoned inverted wingers was a good move.

On the matter of Wilder out. The guy who likes Wilder has this very simple take on the situation. The owners know nothing. They are a fuck up that has happened and will continue to happen. (It was actually him that told me about them before they took over). Wilder is not the man for the job in the long term. He’s shown he’s lost it with his little Englander mentality. BUT when you’re dealing with owners like this who are clueless, better the devil you know than some complete clown they are quite capable of dropping into the job. Basically like him or not, stick with him this season and we’ll survive is his take. Even though the football on offer is dire.

Good on him. He’s a better supporter than me at the moment. Hope he’s right.

First half up to our opener was agony to watch - just no pace or penetration about our play.
The ironic
"We've had a shot !" chanting from a large section of the kop said it all.
I was almost asleep through boredom until awoken by it kicking off between one lone nutter accusing everyone in the vicinity of disloyalty for not singing 🙄
It was all set up to explode in ugly fashion if Lincoln scored but then , from nowhere , we scored and tempers moderated.
I think Wilder must have sensed it and given them a rocket at HT , which at least improved the effort to go forward with some purpose.
In so doing , he got a stay of execution , but he'll be back on a knife-edge in a fortnight if we serve up any more of what we saw in that first-half.

The second half set a bar for what a minimally acceptable performance looks like from now on. It was watchable without being amazing. Compared to the first 40 minutes it was almost like a different sport.

Anyone know what the beef with Wilder and their manager was at full time?

Encouraging win and let's not forget Lincoln have been no mugs so far this season.

Will be an interesting week and I fear losing time on the training ground due to two long trips to Portsmouth then Bristol and minimum recovery.

Wilder was pointing to the pitch. I suspect it was about that nasty challenge on Cannon. They got away with that. There was some very poor refereeing. The Tanganga and Peck bookings were a joke, and he was a lot more tolerant of their excesses than ours.

I was interested to see Lincoln given how well it’s being going for them and it’s easy to see why they did so well last year and this year so far. Very good at keeping their shape, huge, fit guys. Also very physical - they are a dirty side. I suspect they get away with it a bit with their feel good/underdog story.

Where they fell down was having to chase the game. The only time they’ve been behind away this season is right at the end of the Boro game. They couldn’t use their system in the second half and it showed. They frayed at the edges.

And allied to what was likely their worst half of the season was our best half of the season, after a pretty dismal first half, well worked goal aside. You have to give a lot of credit to Wilder and the players. Rothwell got on the front foot and Chong, after a busy but indifferent first half, was really good. Ditto BBD who I rated more highly than others in this thread. If we learnt anything yesterday it is that BBD and Chong need to be that way round!

Lots of good second half displays although Tanganga annoyed me with his lackadaisical play throughout. His refusal to mark Ogbene almost cost us a goal. Fortunately Cooper and a remarkable miss from the rebound bailed him out.

Bamford is a class act. Peck my Motm as he was one of the few who were good for 90 mins. Cannon had a tough day amongst the giants.

More of this please.

Don't think Wilder and Cohen see eye to eye. However it's not unlike him to cause friction after all!

Agree on BBD probably his best game for us this season. The positional switch in the second half led to our third goal. Maybe Wilder reads this forum after all 👀

although we weren't at the best until McGuinness came on to counter their long ball over the top (which Tanganga and Kitching had massive problems with) and moved number 5 out to RB that we looked a lot more robust in the backline. That worried me a tad too, those long, basic balls over the top that Cooper had to come and deal with, three times in the space of about five minutes as I recall.

Thanks for the report Deadbat
After 30 minutes I thought we’d either lose the game or get a 0-0 at best. However it was a great bit of play and a lovely finish to give us the lead and we played much better thereafter. All three goals came from good play and together with a clean sheet, hopefully this will give us some belief and confidence going into the forthcoming games.

Concur with what most people are saying. We were as poor as we have been all season for 35 minutes but after we scored we played much better helped by Lincoln having no plan how to get back in the game. The key moment for me was Chong and BBD switching wings as this gave us more width as we didn't have to consistently try and come inside all the time. This helped to open up the Lincoln defence which had been pretty comfortable up to that point.

The big positives apart from the win and score line were good performances at last from Rothwell, Chong, BBD ad Choudhury. Second half Bamford was back to his best and two excellent finishes. I also thought contrary to many that Cannon put in a decent shift and did a lot of the dirty work up front allowing others to be more effective. For once we didn't end up making a load of substitutions on 60 minutes so perhaps we have improved some fitness levels in the break. Having said all that Lincoln lacked any real quality albeit are very awkward to play against. The first goal was always going to be key which thankfully we got due to our superior quality.

This has to be a stepping stone for the rest of the season and we need to build on this with two tricky long distance away games coming up this week. Yesterday the second half performance should be the absolute minimum requirement given the better opposition we are going to be facing. Still feel we need to look over our shoulder at looking to put distance between the teams below us at the moment rather than any thoughts of challenging in the top half. However lets enjoy a deserved win and move on to Wednesday night,
