Burnham is considering allowing alcohol back in the stands at football games

Im not in favour of it if you cant go 45 / 90 mins without a drink threres a problem. I love a beer but the piss they serve is just not appealing
Also you will get idiots if we score they will launch their beer up in the air and you may get covered in lager

Even if was the best beer in Sheffield theres nothing worth having people walking backwards and forwards to the bar because they can't go 45 minutes without a drink. Then you literally chuck in people throwing beer in celebration because they have seen it on TV and those who can't handle their drink without being a dick head.

Wonder if it’s the corporates at old Trafford that are pressuring for the change. So they can drink in view of the pitch.
Would be a dreadful idea on our kop for the reasons you state.

It's not so much that, it's just overall behaviour of some people who ruin it for the rest. I'd like a pint while watching the game, I can do it at other sporting events.

Putting arguments aside on cost/quality virtually every other type of spectator entertainment leaves it to the venue/organiser to make the call on selling alcohol - which the vast majority do.

You can drink in the stands at non league football, women’s football and at every other pro football league in Europe.

Leave it up to the individual to decide where and when they want a drink. If somebody is determined to get drunk they will simply do it before the match, regardless of whether you can get a drink in the ground.

In fact, on away games especially, it’s usually the case people will get tanked up because they know there will be a 90 minute window where they can’t get a drink.

In terms of people getting up and down to go to the bar - it closes at kick off and doesn’t reopen til 38 minutes. No real need to change that.

With family and other commitments I don’t always have the time for the pub before or after so it would be nice to get a drink during the game. Maybe even get one at half time I don’t have to try and drink in 5 minutes.

We've had the beer ban since 1985 - 40 years!! Don't think Andy Burnham has been in too many groups of fans standing at away games - if he had, I think he might think twice about this. Why change something with which most people don't have any real issue?

I think if you serve in reusable cups that you could gain a deposit back from, that COULD reduce the number of twats throwing beer up and down. Or make the cups a piece of memorabilia with a nice Blades design on them. I also like a pint whilst watching the match, not so much I can’t go without one, I just enjoy one but yeh, not Carling.

I would say it might help the club generate more cash but in reality, doesn't it just mean Compass take more money for the time being? Potential to negotiate a better contract next time round with larger sales volume?

I love the idea of sitting watching the game with a beer. In reality, I drive to matches so don't ever get to drink anyway.

if we sold an extra 3000 pints per match, at all 23 home games, thats an extra £400,000 in revenue.

I personally think any uptick in sales (after the first couple of games) would be minimal.

At nearly £7 a pint I don’t think many will be buying extra - but rather taking their time with their drinks rather than necking them on the concourse.

Completely agree, except that I would allow it in corporate areas and directors boxes (where Burnham sits), and if it goes well I MIGHT think about extending it to the whole of the South Stand but NEVER on the Kop or away ends at ANY ground.

Agree with most that it’s a terrible idea. Fine in corporate areas where Burnham will sit because you won’t get some dickhead chucking his lager all over you.
This will also cause unnecessary arguments between fans in the stands.

I have had a season ticket for many seasons in La Liga and there has never been the option to drink alcohol in the stands. At my team you can't even buy beer in the concourse.

And that's despite the fact that opposition fans can mingle unmolested in just about any part of the ground, unlike in England, and that in Spain you can order beer at McDonald's.

What an inconsequential suggestion this is.

In the corporate areas they give you free tea/coffee at half time, and if you just take the empty coffee cup and pour your beer into it instead nobody says anything when you take your drink back outside to watch the second half.

The arguments against it are ridiculous. The main ones seem to be a) people might throw it in the air and b) surely people can go 45 minutes without a drink.

The answer to a) is clearly to charge a deposit on the container and make throwing beer in the air an ejectable offence (if it isn't already)

b) isn't a logical argument. Of course anyone can go 45 minutes without a drink. But they might fancy one.

It's like banning chocolate in view of the pitch and if anyone objects saying "surely you can go 45 minutes without a Dairy Milk".

I don’t know the ins and outs of the catering contract, but we’d only get a % of the additional revenue. It’s likely to be done on a profit share or management fee basis. So we’d see a fraction of the benefit.
