Lack of players from abroad

You must have missed last summer.

Sheffield United made four signings through their AI recruitment model in 2025: Jefferson Caceres, Mihail Polendakov, Ehije Ukaki and Christian Nwachukwu.
Yes and we will never know if they were a mistake or not because Wilder ditched them straightaway.

Presumably players like these take a while to come good.

They are players you sign a loan for a season or two. I don’t think we saw them as first team players when they signed. Maybe the owners did due to their lack of knowledge.

Because Wilder is a racist dinosaur innit? 🙄

Seriously though, our infrastructure is crap.

Why can't we get this right? Most championship clubs rely on scouting players from abroad whom will be cheaper than getting players from the English leagues, these players seem to be attacking skilled pacey types compared to our slower and shiter Tom Cannon types.

Or is it just me?
Crossed my mind yesterday when you looked at the two squads how UK centric our squad is compared to theirs. Even the ones that play for other countries are British or Irish born.

It's rather ironic that Wilder's only non-uk signing is Choudhury and he's been awful.

Though it doesn't help when you're not match fit and being played wildly out of your natural position, so can't blame Choudhury too much.

I hope people realise that signing players from abroad is very reliant on data rather than scouting .

Didn't we try that once

Highlighted this nearly years ago, completely agree with the OP

Other teams seem to manage it successfully. Maybe have a look at what they do instead of winging it which is what we appeared to do last season
Im not saying its wrong to look abroad but were damned if we do and damned if we dont .
Really dont know how many failures other clubs get or what the ratio is .

It’s not a new thing with Wilder. Wilder v1 spoke at length about wanting players from GB for a closer dressing room. It worked for Wilder v1.

Football has since moved on. In a day when over 70% of the premier league players starting games were born outside of GB you are severely limiting your prospects of buying and developing a premier league regular. You’re also fishing in the most expansive pond.

When Wilder left the first time and PA did that interview on Sky he said one of the things they clashed about was recruitment. They set up some meetings about recruitment and when they got on to discussing a new goalkeeper as we had been firmly priced out of a Dean hendeson return wilder had one name on his list and that was Ramsdale. The scouts had got a number of European goalkeepers on their lists available in the 5/6m range but wilder was adamant it was Ramsdale and Ramsdale only. They all knew we didn’t have a big budget so wanted to use it wisely.

Yeah Ramsdale has gone on to have a good career but that 13-15 million saved on a keeper could have bought another couple of outfield players we badly needed. We could’ve attempted to replace JOC for a start.
Yes we could've signed the great Ivo Grbic, oh wait on a minute!!!

So obviously we should never try it again. We obviously can’t do what other clubs, even those in lower leagues, are quite capable of. That’s how shit we are as a club. Is that what you’re saying?

Not one bit. As I have said there was alot of criticism on here for the so called AI experiment which is really data driven recruitment.
We got it wrong albeit some may still come off, who knows.

I really dont know what the success ratio is compared with developing in house but it comes with financial risks which it appears were not in a position to pursue currently .

I dont think were a shit club in any way . The squad probably isn't how we'd want it to be but its looking like a season of holding our ground and no more .

I cant guess the strategy but if I had to I'd say its not never , just not now.

Not really changed at all since then.

Other clubs have though.

Ivo Grbic though.

That’s our recruitment and goalkeeping coach recommendation and a Wilder signing
Frightening isn’t it

Luckily they brought in Michael Cooper to solve the situation.

I wonder how many were excited at the signing, 6'5" Croatian international, played for Atletico Madrid and Lille, qualified for the Champions League.

"As an Atletico Madrid fan I can say you guys have bought an excellent goalkeeper."

"You will get great goalkeeper and real leader!"

As a 6-foot-5 Croatian international goalkeeper, Grbić is widely known for his physical dominance in the box, quick reflexes, and command of his penalty area

Sounds like the spin James Bord must have given COH about his wonder ZX Spectrum AI recruitment model.

I'm shocked that this man is only interested in British and Irish players.

Not particularly arsed about overseas signings (clear we have no intention of going down that path). But I’d absolutely adore seeing us sign players who haven’t played for us, been linked to us or have some affiliation with us. It’s a bit weird using such rigid requirements.

We used the AI platform of a Poker Player. Who knew that wouldnt work

We have taken financial risks with our current recruitment model (Tom Cannon) also signing only players that fit Wilders antiquated idea of signing a professional footballer who has played for us before (BBD, Choudhury, Jairo) or who is injury prone (Davies, Shackleton, etc)

We are on the decline as a football club I know the loss of parachute payments doesnt help but that should not stop us from being shrewd in the Transfer Market we lack players with physicality and pace. Our fitness levels are a joke. Coventry and other clubs have been successful without parachute payments
I hope we do hold our ground

If you think for a second i dont recognise that then your mistaken.

Both things can be true ,we cocked up recruitment 2 summers on the bounce with completely different strategies.

Its not a case of domestic v foreign and which is better , if you both badly you"ll end up in the same place.

Correct, it's a case of shopping in the biggest possible market in order to get the best value for money with the resources you have available.

No one is saying foreign players are better. They're saying we ought to be looking overseas as well as at home because that gives us more options. I'll add that the UK market is more expensive because of the influence of the Premier League on prices lower down the pyramid.

The particular AI / Data strategy we used was never going to work. This showed to owners naievity
There are other Data driven strategies that obviously do work

I would agree with that but with Wilder we dont even explore the foreign market. In todays football that is unforgiveable. You cant just dismiss a huge chunk of the market beacause they are not Bristish and havent played in this country before

Sunderland signed Wilson Isidor from Zenit St. Petersburg for 5 million.

Norwich signed Mo Toure from Randers in Denmark for about 3 million.

Compare these two players to Tom Cannon on the following metrics: price, performances, and current value. It's not pretty reading.

Until we are in a position to make signings like this we have hit our ceiling. We need a recruitment department that is capable of unearthing players like this and a manager who is willing and able to integrate players like this into his team.

I haven't said if theyre better or worse in terms of talent or value . The risks are greater due to be reliant on data , players settling , language , culture , all sorts .

After 2 summers weve shown how to get it wrong using both statergies , certainly on paper. We'll have to give what we have time with the coaches to see if it actually can be made to work this season .

Im not against either statergy , but as ever its recruiting the right players wherever theyre from
