I've watched our recruitment over the last few years and it's all so one dimensional. Older injury prone journeyman players.
Why not try younger loans? Marli Salmon at Arsenal is a perfect example. He's had a fantastic pre-season. Won't get much game time as a 16yr old kid especially as they're stacked at centre back with Saliba, Gabriel, Mosquera and now about to sign Konsa. Ring Arsenal. Be proactive. He's got limitless talent. Or what about Chelsea or City's academies? We're living in the dark ages constantly signing over the hill players.

We do loan young uns - rak saki, mcatee, Donovan, but 16yr old, especially at CB is crackers mate

I don't care how good he could be, a 16 year old centee back would get absolutely torn apart in the Championship.

We've signed 5 players over the age of 30 in the last 4 seasons.
You'd say Tom Davies, Jamie Shackleton & Kalvin Phillips were/are injury prone. The rest were/are either decent or just crap. I'd wager most championship teams signings over the last few years have a similar make-up.

The kid is over 6ft. He'd pocket Kieffer Moore any day of the week. Different quality completely. If you're good enough then age is immaterial. Just look at Rooney and Dowman.

Those 2 are exceptions not the rule

Also, they will no doubt have made many mistakes, but doing so 70yds up the pitch is fine

Doing it as a CB leads to goals

I would take a punt on a gifted 16 yr old attacking lad
I wouldn’t on a CB

We have signed younger players in the last 3 to 4 years …Donovan , Gilchrist , Rak Saki , Soumare , Zatterstrom , Burrows , McAtee , MGW off the top of my head ?

There is absolutely no way a 16yr old would
‘pocket’ Keiffer Moore.

Moore has bullied some very experienced and established championship defenders, he’d make absolute mincemeat of a 16yr old with no first team experience.

Because we have no one capable of coaching and improving young players.They all leave eventually anyway.
Easier to pass the buck for poor performance onto older experienced players cos they should know better.

Age aside it does kind of prove his point. That’s a woeful return on recruitment since Hoyland came to the club and still people defend him.

Not saying we should be signing 16 year old centrebacks but maybe we should be signing players with more physical attributes that are capable of playing 40 games a season.

If I remember correctly - Slater never really made it into our 1st team, Egan was too slow and error prone and McBurnie was seen as a bit of an idiot and useless as a CF.
None of them leaving caused any issues with the fans

Egan was the archetypal "good Championship defender" whose deficiencies were immediately exposed by top level players. McBurnie was mainly only hated by some certain vocal characters. Slater probably would have started more for us but for him being blocked by a very good group of centre mids, which isn't his fault (although I'm sure if he did get minutes, some idiots here would just look at his 5'8" stature and assume he's just Louis Reed 2.0)

100%, you look at Slater now and he’s had to work extremely hard to become the player he has and a lot of that has come through experience. Something we wasn’t able to offer him for the past 7-8 years.

Egan was let go but Slatie was knowhere near the first team and McBurnie went to Spain for the money, I’m sure that when Egan went we weren’t that bothered we got Souttar on line instead and he was the time an upgrade.

Egan was injured throughout 23/24 hence why he didn't get a new deal. We were awful defensively, but still stand that we'd have been slightly better with him at the back.
