United played in the first 'Community Shield' game

Yesterday I was reading up in the history of the Community Shield. I hadn't realised that United played in the original version of this tournament, then called the Sherriff Of London Charity Shield. In 1898 we shared the huge Shield with Corinthian following a replay, details below.

Sheffield United refused to play extra time,[2] with the club president[6] alleging unfairness shown by the referee as an excuse,[7] resulting in the honour being shared.[2]

The play was described as not being particularly exciting, attributed to players being "evidently stale" following the original match the week before.[7]

I see the Blades refused to play extra time when the replay ended 1-1, alleging the referee was biased. Were there chants from our fans, I wonder, of “Nudger Nudger tek em off, Nudger, tek em off”?
