Not a bad result, 0-0 clean sheet against a side that will contend for the play offs this season.

Watching that game though, we are desperate for a Gibbs-White CAM/false 9 striker role. My god, the gap between Peck and Rothwell and Cannon and Bamford was awful. We kept on sending the ball long like a prime Sean Dyche Burnley.

Neither Bamford or Cannon dropped in to receive the ball to feet. It just didn’t work whatsoever.

Nevertheless, i’m happy with that result. Tanganga MOTM for me. UTB ⚔️
 



Defensively did OK, the rest was very poor though. It's going to be a long season if we don't bring in a left winger, another striker, a big bastard centre midfielder like Vini and another centre half. Lots gets said about Cannon, and most of it is correct, I've seen very few worse professional footballers. Slow, weak, constantly on his heels, loses every foot race going, even when he's 70/30 favourite. No redeeming quality. Midfield is not mobile enough. McGuiness did OK today but last season shows that's the anomaly rather than the norm. O'Hare is too slow and too small, loses most physical duels for the ball even when he should be favourite. Yes, he runs around a lot, but we need more than that.
 
We would have lost that last season.

I thought McGuinness was good, as well as Tanganga to be fair to the lad. I thought their forwards perhaps suited him today.

O’Hare had a frustrating game. At times it feels like he needs about 6 touches to get it under control.

Cannon had about 8 touches that first half; he’s neither use nor ornament. Get him gone.

Oné again looked sharp until he took a bit of a knock.

Donovan and Seriki as a pair should flourish given time.

Clearly an opening on the left to make for an effective 4-2-3-1.

You either need to do that or perhaps go 4-3-3; it seems a bit wasteful to have Arblaster on the bench and Cannon starting. It doesn’t perfectly work for O’Hare, but he can still roam a bit like Gus used to and at least worh 4-3-3 you’ve less chance of your fullbacks being exposed.

Let’s see what the window brings. It’s good to not be sat on zero after one game against a tricky opposition.

It was absolutely awful to watch, anyone who was happy with that shower of sh ite is a sucker for punishment.

No one wants to watch games like that.
 
I imagine it was what a lot of people expected, it certainly was for me.

We look tidy without being very threatening. We don't look entirely secure at the back.

Mid-table mediocrity beckons.

Drinking Horlicks whilst watching will not be advisable for anyone wishing to get through 90+ minutes, or facing a long-ish drive home.

Coops, good game. Claimed a lot and was in the right place when needed. McCallum, good shift but doesn't press forward. Tanganga, I still can't see what he has that makes him a 'special player'. McGuiness, placeholder for Souttar then he's history. Seriki, looks like a decent pairing with Donovan much the same as he was with Brooks, but we still aren't creating anything. O'Hare is NOT a winger and is played out of position every time he is in that position. Peck, is just a utility midfielder and Rothwell, although a better game today, isn't the midfield dynamo we need.

Up front Bamford played on his own and got a shot off.

Cannon ... is fucking abysmal.

The subs? Ineffective.

All you can really say is we are probably gonna be a lot more solid defensively which is just about the only thing Wilder can get right these days. In possession we are likely to be awful but if we build a side that’s got some counter-attacking qualities to it, then we could be a bit more exciting than it’s looking like we will be currently.
 
Cannon just doesn't work it's only wilder trying to justify the signing !! Still think 4-2-3-1 is the best formation in the championship but!!! Our recruitment is absolute bobbar .
Seriki, tanganga, new cb ,Burrows
Phillips, ollie/peck
Donovan, ohare, chong
Bamford/Campbell/one

We need 1/2 centre halves comfortable on the ball.
2/3 number 10,s/ wingers
Or is it time to blood some of the youngsters through.
We looked lethargic and uninterested and totally lost ,too many balls in the air up to Bamford etc
I suppose one positive is the back 4 looked quite solid.
I would imagine wilder will be writing up all his excuses ready for first of September and the rest of the season, I can help him with "windows notes " and how to colour tab for each time period and level of excuse/who to blame 😁

Tidy would be one of the last words I would use to describe that,it was a rag bag of mistakes and running up blind alleys,as a performance it was like walking into your house and finding out you've been burgled with draws tipped out and stuff all over the floor
 



Positives...

We are one point closer to 50, other than that, the current owners are another week down the line to having to sell.
 
Well im not watching another season of that. Positives are we are a point better off than this time last season and Wilder will focus on the clean sheet.
If we are going to hoof the ball down the channel then we need to play One, as he will run them and has the strength to hold up the ball if he gets it.
Can’t understand why we are unable to put more than 3 passes together before we either lose it or kick it long.
Souttar isn’t going to solve any problems.
I’d be surprised if we score more than one goal a game

Fair point, I’ve read it back, you’re right. I’m just finding it hard to take anything away from that home performance, but your right, the result was good considering
 
On that showing it is clear that the best we can hope for is a top half finish.

If I’m not mistaken, our only attacking midfielders are Chong, Donovan and O’Hare, which is seriously lacking at this level.

I like O’Hare, so it feels wrong to lump him in this, but I just don’t think he’s a top end Championship midfielder. Has no pace, can’t drive forward and can’t strike a ball really. The other 2 just are just squad fillers.

Even if all 3 were world class and we were eyeing a go at promotion, then having no backup for them would be risky.

The balance in midfield is so defensive and that’s on the main man himself.

Keep it tight, hope for 1-0s - finish about 15th
 
All we’ve managed to do pre season is fail to bring in any decent targets, sell our most creative player, treat the fans to a German summer holiday, run between some cones and surprise surprise produce a garbage performance. How many seasons now have we been told that pre season is key, oh next season we’ll get signings early.. stop telling lies to the fans say we’re fucked instead of over promising and under delivering, every fucking time. This is supposed to be entertainment, a rest from the drudgery and tedium of normal life… I’d rather be down a pit, gouging out coal with my bare hands than watch this dross served up every week.
 
If I have to watch what I just watched for another 4050 minutes this season, Im not sure my mental wellbeing will survive...
 
Said this on the match thread but what has happened to Wilder? He’s had nearly a year with most of this group now & there is zero credible style, no patterns of play, nothing about us whatsoever.

He talked in pre-season about getting balls in behind teams and we’ve just seen the reality of what that means in the Championship. Opposition just drops deep and heads everything away while we keep tossing possession away & hoping to pick up on scraps.

It’s criminal that we’ve spent all summer working on that, it’s League 2 level football.

Also, Souttar or Anel don’t solve this. This is a coaching issue & it might seem dramatic after one game, but the warning signs were there in the 40 games last season - tactically we’re so far off it.
 
Wilderball at it finest really can’t expect strikers to do much just hoofing it up to them
 
Awful game and poor atmosphere. Two up top does not work in the modern game I'm afraid. Classic Wilder I'm afraid.

Happy with the Centre Backs. Think McGuiness been given a rough ride so fair play to him.

Definitely mid table stuff but this embarrassing 8th place and in play offs gives a few a chance even if not on it.

I'm willing to give Wilder the benefit of the doubt at least until the transfer window closes. He says he has his targets and let's hope the owners back him accordingly.
However, I'll say this now...if Cannon becomes this season's Lundstram, picked week in, week out regardless of performance levels, then I will (again) lose any respect for Wilder.
Cannon is a waste of space. I fail to see what attributes he brings to the team. One did more in one minute of coming on than Cannon did in 67 minutes.
Bite the bullet Chris and drop him now.

Wasn't until TV cameras showed Phillips in the stand I realised he wasn't on the bench. Hard to think whose place he takes on it. Blaster or Jario would be unlucky to lose a spot on the bench at least
