Quick summary and ratings which might be the case this season, rather than extensive and detailed match reports (said end of last season I might not do as in depth moving forward, sorry - some may rejoice!). I may bring them out of bigger games/great performances maybe.

Really comfortable afternoon in the end. I expected a tougher test after seeing Mansfield cause us all sorts of problems in the FA Cup last season but they did not go as direct (leaving Oates and Smith out) and even though McGoldrick was good, it meant they did not get the ball forward quick enough. We controlled the opening, took the lead after a scrappy but poacher’s goal. After this Rothwell should have had a second, just after we really should have had a penalty too. However, they had a decent spell to end the half and Cooper made one good save and they had another half chance. Second, they had the Oates chance after Tanganga misjudged a ball through but then after we got the 2nd, it killed the game. After this we could have had a few more, if not for overplaying but finally got a third with a well made and taken move.

Overall, it was an easy win against a poor side. We had decent shape and the side looked solid. We looked better defensively and we had a nice solid base (granted versus an opponent we should be better than). Rothwell and Peck controlled midfield with the former the best player first half and the latter second half. Seriki and Chong looked threats and Bamford always looked to get on the shoulder. Concerns remained over performance of Cannon who again looked our weakest player. I thought O’Hare was frustrating but did improve second half when more central. One gave a decent cameo as did Arblaster. Donovan made some bewildering decisions but is tricky and quick. We will have a much tougher test next week, and beyond but it was a really professional performance, especially with the Hamer sale imminent and the lack of newcomers to add to already threadbare (in terms of quality) squad. I think we have a lot of weaknesses but Wilder is right – if Cooper, Tanganga, Arblaster, Rothwell and Campbell can get to standards they are capable, then we can be better in many ways but there is still some obvious holes for me.

Cooper 6.5/10 – Largely untroubled but made one superb save. His kicking was still awful – sent three out of play in the space of about a minute. Fine with everything else but not sure he had another save to make?

Seriki 6.5/10 – Few loose moments but got forward, looked a threat and carried the main bulk of our attacking threat earlier. Not as involved second half. Hopefully being withdrawn – just a precaution.

Norrington Davies 5.5/10 – No major errors but slow at times to react to the ball coming forward but Akins can be dangerous and did not offer too much. Surprised he is back involved as do not see a future for him here. Weird he ends up starting each season when you think he is off!

Tanganga 6/10 – Decent enough and won the headers he had to and was competitive. One poor moment where he lost Oates and nearly cost us.

McGuiness 6/10 – Scored a well taken header and was solid with no mistakes I can think of. Clearly will be off soon if we get a taker but did a professional job today.

Rothwell 7/10 – Thought despite his bad miss and the three odd wild efforts that led to the Bamford goal, he was our best player first half. Got on the ball and moved it on. Also got forward well. Played well and seemed to control midfield for a long period of the match.

Peck 7/10 – Quieter than Rothwell first half but then after he went off, came into his own and took over dictating play. Involved in a series of decent attacks and made a number of interceptions. He was our best player second half.

Chong 6/10 – Actually, did ok to start and despite sometimes taking too long, he put a few decent balls in and linked well with Seriki. Injury did not look – might be a hamstring and we already short out wide.

O’Hare 6/10 – I actually thought he was frustrating today with too many touches, poor final decisions and inability to pull the trigger. He shot when he should have passed and vice versa. Final half an hour was better, when put in the middle (not sure he is a winger) and he started to be a real threat. Could have had a few before he did finally net.

Bamford 6.5/10 – Held the ball up well and took his goal excellently, which was only a half chance really. He is an intelligent player and brings people into play. Few poor decisions when well placed though. Our best, and most important, forward.

Cannon 3/10 – A few bits of link play and he did show for the ball but overall, he was by far our weakest player. Lost out physically, did not hold it, made poor decisions and even when the game was stretched and he had at least 4 or 5 decent chances, took too long or was blocked. We were almost trying to tee him up at the end and he still could not score. I do not see what he offers – I would be trying hard to move him on and if interest from PNE is legitimate seeing what we can get.

Subs:

Burrows 5.5/10 – He was ok but did not get forward that much and we seemed to attack more down the right as the game went on. I do wonder if he is on his way out – the fact RND was preferred, with McCallum out poorly, was odd?

Donovan 5.5/10 – Weird performance. Some awful things where he mis controlled it out, ran into players or hit wild passes but then a few good runs and dribbles, culminating with the hockey assist at the end. Looks very raw though and not sure he can be relied on to be a regular starter – looks more an impact sub to me at the moment?

Arblaster 6/10 – Thought he did ok and played a few nice balls (one to O’Hare) and got about the pitch. Got a nasty whack too.

One 6/10 – Showed more in the brief time he was on the pitch than Cannon did the whole game. Got involved, got stuck in and won a few flick ons as the game was stretched. Had a hand in the final goal.

Doherty – Not sure he had many touches as the game was effectively won.

Wilder 7.5/10 – Solid showing where we controlled most of the game, kept a clean sheet and scored three goals. He picked McGuiness over Baptiste, who scored and the others who came on, all contributed too.

Mansfield – Thought they were poor and only had a brief flurry for 10-15 minutes towards half time. Maybe if the shot goes in past Cooper or Oates does not overrun it, it is a different game of course but they were second best throughout and struggled to create much at all. Defensively, they were holes all over the place. I thought Didzy showed flashes but also maybe slowed them down a bit (they were direct at the Lane and just sent it over the top). They might be in for a bit of a struggle this season, on that evidence.

Player of the match – Didzy was ok and nice to see him get such a great reception from the fans but the lad Blake Tracy was main threat with a couple of shots.

Weak link – Tyler Roberts has really gone downhill since being a promising player at Leeds and was rightly hooked.

Referee – Stephen Martin 7/10 – Thought he reffed it well. Kept it flowing and did not blow up for minimal contact. Thought Seriki’s booking was a bit harsh but suppose McGoldrick was getting away? Reed and Thompson were both rightly booked for them.

Will do my pre season predictions next few days.

'McGuiness 6/10 - Scored a well taken header and was solid with no mistakes I can think of.'

Surely if he made no mistakes, was solid AND weighed in with a goal that warrants at minimum a 7/10?

Oh and a 3/10 for Cannon kind of renders the scoring as ridiculous. If you're going to keep the reports coming then you have to shelve your bias otherwise you can dish out the scores before the game.

Great to see you back with reports Deadbat. Totally understandable if you want to be briefer.

One point that the comms keep making was that Mansfield had only lost something like one of their final 14 or 15 league games last season and were no mugs. Agree they didn't look great today but surely that has something to do with us working hard off the ball. Not a great game but we were mostly in control from start to finish.

Thought a 3 for Cannon was a bit harsh. He did some decent lay-offs and made a few runs. Though he wasn't our best player I'd rate him a mark or two higher.

Impressed with Rothwell today, he looked to get on the ball and we were clearly told not to give it to the CB’s, but to Rothwell (then Peck 2nd half) instead.

Liked Chong and Seriki for the first 25 mins, then Chong got injured! Donovan needs some physical size, but hopefully grows into the men’s game.

Saw a glimpse today with the Onè cameo where O’Hare had some pace either side of him. I think our loan targets need to be two wingers with pace, with Donovan and Onè backing them up. Onè is an option upfront too and would like to see him get more minutes this year.

Its my opinion. You are entitled to yours.

Thought he laid it off a couple of times but outside if that he was completely ineffective. Lost out physically, rarely held it up, made poor choices and when given chances near the end, took an age and missed them all. He does not know when to come shirt, not when he needs to go long. Hes not fast, strong and today proved he is a nothing player. One did more in 20 minutes in terms of link play and looking a threat.

Maybe you could argue 4/10 at a push but he was our worst player by some distance for me. People keep making excuses gor him. He needs to be in a two, he just needs a run of games, or players don't spot his runs. I am not seeing anything at all? Anyone else think Im too harsh, happy to discuss but if he cannot stand out against a likely Lg 1 struggle with lots of space, its a worry.

But your opinion carries some weight whether you like it or not. You've been doing your reports for years and I've always enjoyed them and as a rule saw very little that I disagreed with. Sadly now I wonder why you've gotten so negative, with low scores aplenty and very downbeat match reports.

I get we've been rough of late, boring and below par but even when we've been ok and done the job it's still all so negative. I'm no clapper by any means but even I wonder why, after a decent warm up for the season today, it's as though we'd lost 3 - 0.

Really enjoyed this game. Watched it in the pub with two of my sons and my QPR mate, who said ''Norrington Davies is steady but an injury waiting to happen''. How true.

Thank you Deadbat you and Roygbiv the only reason I come on the forum now.

I think the vibe come 7:30pm next Saturday might be different.

I called the game as it was: a professional but decent performance against a lower league side. I am not sure its downbeat. Gave every player above average ratings apart from Cannon (I have said before I hate newspapers who just give 6s, 7s and 8s to everyone and no other range of marks).

My reports were probably more downbeat and negative last year, as other than SWFC, we lost more games than anyone!

Good to see you back doing what you do brilliantly DB.

3 for cannon is absolutely fair in my eyes. He just has that knack of never being in the right place, always behind a man, never available. Wouldn’t bash him if he kept missing chances, but he’s never even in a position to miss them.

Move on asap, he’d be so so easy to replace. Oné already a more effective presence.

I thought Cannon was the weakest player by quite some distance. Obviously we all come at it with biased eyed with what we've seen before but I really thought he was poor today. I still keep hoping he will come good but other that mini-run In December/January, I haven't seen anything from him so far. Rothwell, on the other hand, showed that we may have written him off too early.

Very disappointed with Donovan when he came on,thought this would be a soft take off for his blades loan period.Hope he can improve when coming off the bench and become a fans favourite as can’t see him as a starter right now.

Pod Bros sticking together, riding roughshod over the little people.

As soon as the Tufty Club got a regular 15 listeners it all changed and Deadbat forgot his Anston/Kivo roots.
That so-called Roygbiv won't get out of bed unless there's a red carpet and 3,5 cwt of rose petals, now he's part of the Pinchopolitan elite.

Oh how they've changed

Cannon was awful against fairly poor opposition and did nothing, again, to prove that he should be anywhere near the team or even this level of football, frankly.

If PNE want him, they're welcome to him and whatever they offer, we should take because his value sure isn't going up any time soon.

Get Oné plenty of first team minutes in his legs and build him up instead. Surely the lad offers more than Cannon right here and now and can offer more money-wise if he succeeds and some of the bigger boys come calling.

I'll stick my neck out now and say that at 23, Tom Cannon's career has already peaked.

I thought it was a demonstrably poor performance for sixty minutes. We faffed about endlessly, lost concentration and didn't press home any real talent advantage, allowing Mansfield back into the game in the first half which could have been a bit embarrassing if Cooper hadn't been sharp down to his left.

The backline is still missing dominance and composure. Two minutes in and McGuinness is heading the ball into touch unchallenged and Norrington Davies predictably beaten in a foot race by their right winger. Why is he even near the first team? On the other side Seriki was given a right run round by the 38 year old Didsy and Tanganga to me isn't anywhere near what we thought we'd get when we bought him. In the middle Peck dug out but his buddy Rothwell is still a clumsy pub-player. He has no vision and no attacking punch and doesn't really integrate. No surprise we improved when he went off. See also RND. I thought COH had a middling game and was indecisive and wasteful when in on goal, Chong looked capable but incapable in equal parts and up front thank god we had something out of Bamford, because the rest of his finishing and heading was pretty rubbish. Oh ... hang on. I was hoping for more from Donovan after watching him clip that goal in the top corner at BDTBL in training, but saw him feed the noisy Blades fans behind the goal.

We did have eleven on the pitch didn't we? Can't remember who the other player was ...

If you think about just where our goals came from (against a patently inferior opposition) the first was an opportunistic outcome from woeful pinball shooting, the second through their shit marking (and stuff we used to do with Norwood and Egan/O'Connell) and the third if anything was well worked, if against Mansfield who by then were chasing the game and breathing out of their bumholes. Sure, we won, but it didn't tell me that next week we are ready for Birmingham or the teams beyond that. And if anything again, it shows we can do things without Gus Hamer, regardless of everyone's sheets drying out on the line about it. If people recall, when Gus was suspended or injured last season, we actually played a bit better because the expectation on him wasn't there - we didn't instantly give it to him to collect and do the magic which was a big responsibility on him. With Hamer not on the pitch, the team had to work it out for themselves.

A professional display against a surprisingly poor side. We were always in control and won deservedly. Nice to go through.

Clough got it wrong. They should have been bombing long balls down our throats. I was fine with Didzy slaloming about as by and large he was nowhere near the goal.

I see we didn't mark Little Louis on corners again, but we got away with it.

Cooper looks solid and confident. O'Hare seems to be back to his refusal to shoot ways, which hopefully he can come out of. Cannon wasn't mentioned on commentary for the first half an hour which gives an idea of how poor he was.

One must not go on loan. We will need him.

Doesn't tell us much about what is to come but job done, and done well.

Appreciate all the work on the longer form versions of the past, but prefer this shorter format. Managed to stay focused long enough to read it all in one go. Cheers DB!

Ignore the pelters DB. Always enjoy your reports. And yes, Cannon was shite.
If he can’t shine against Mansfield Town we need to get rid.
A blind man could tell you that of the forwards we have available at present, we need to start games with Bamford and One.

The corner thing is the only thing I saw from last season that concerns me. We look to be sticking to this zonal marking system that's been our undoing at set pieces for a few seasons.

Other than that, a very professional performance even if the opposition is a level below and put a poor showing in. These are the sort of games that fizzled out to a 0-0 last couple of seasons. More importantly, and I've not seen anyone else pick up on this, but the players kept going until the end - we don't score that third last season because the players are hanging out of their arse by that point.

Cannon is still absolutely shite and 3/10 is very generous. he could have been sent off in the first 5 and it wouldn't have made a difference to the result.

As I have said in here before, Deadbat's rating scores are not the same as the ratings we remember from The People and News of the World that we are used to.

4= stinker
5= poor
6 = below average
7 = average
8 = good
9 = excellent
10 = out of the world

I think Deadbat's rating of 5 is "average". He gives ratings of 0 quite often and him giving a 9 is as rare as a hen's teeth.

McGuinness looked a bit shaky at times, so 6 was about right. 3 for Cannon also about right, he looked by far our worst player.

Also with one of his late chances he should have passed to an unmarked Blaster, instead chose a ridiculous turn and shot and blazed over.

Think you’ve been too generous tbh

Got to agree with the 3 rating for Cannon I too can't see what he offers to this team. The kindest thing would be to let him go elsewhere to a team where he might fit in as it is certainly not working out with us. A bit of cash would be good for us and a new start elsewhere good for him rather than Wilder persisting to play him in an effort to justify the exorbitant fee we paid for his services.

Yep totally agree. McGuiness might be a relatively weak player but Ib don't know why Wilder threw him under a bus publically, especially if we can't sell him. As for Canon, I am not a supporter of him but he will not be the fist striker to fail here and to shoulder the blame when it isin huge part due to the supply to hi.m Firstly as already mentioned here Coopers distribution is poor and Tanganga free kicks from our own half even worse. End result Canon has no clue whether the ball will be to him or between 10 yards left or right, short or over his head. He perpetually looks up when Peck has the ball and Peck goes round and round in circles before playing the pass he could have made immediately he received the ball.

Thanks DB, perfect length for the match. Which on the whole was boring and slow, which worries me for the season. I like some excitement for my money.

Deadbat only gave Jack O’Connell a 9.5 when we beat Brentford 2-0 after Madine had been sent off.

there may be evidence to prove me wrong but as far as I am aware a rating of 10 has never been given and if the aforementioned O’Connell performance wasn’t deemed worthy of a 10 then I suspect nothing ever will!
