Incoming? Rabbi Matondo

Donovan seems to offer trickery, more than genuine pace. With the likes of Bamford, Hamer and O'Hare likely to play a big part in our attack, it would be nice to have a player with real pace as an option as well. Matondo is absolutely rapid and he showed a couple of good touches, but there are other question marks about his game. He was shoved off the ball a couple of times, but I wouldn't judge him on a couple of mishit shots. Wilder said he's shown good things in training, so let's not write him off at this stage.

I'm not sure Bamford could be classed as "injury prone and past their peak" tbh.

Granted a lot of fans didn't want him but I think that was more to do with his Leeds links rather than him being injury prone.

I recall a lot of fans saying before he signed that he was too old/injury prone rather than Leeds links. I definitely remember that. h

There are players out there that have had a poor spell/lost their way but there's still a player in there. I'm not saying that Mantondo is definitely a good signing but rather there's always sone free transfer teams out there worth taking a risk on. We've had some stinkers that have cost us millions in transfer fees too of course. A free transfer on a one year contract with option of another year for example could be a smart but of business.

I think he seems like a decent low risk gamble to take.

The answer doesn’t have to be signing poor players, with seemingly no future potential and a poor injury record.

Nor does the answer have to be spending loads of money.

There’s a mid ground isn’t there around being smarter?

Gus has to play centrally, the job of the 10 is to create and be the main source of creation. Pressing should come secondary. Do Southampton play Finn Azaz in the 10 cause he gets about a bit? No, he scores and creates goals.
 
Matondo is bound to have some ring rust given he hasn't played much at all at a competitive level so you'd imagine can only improve with game time, we are crying out for someone to stretch teams too, think this is a gamble worth taking for the pure pace and the way teams will have to defend him differently to slower wingers. dropping deeper to avoid him running past them etc creating different pockets of space, plus he will be an outlet when we are hanging on.
The fact he was faster than Kyle Walker in his prime pace wise AND Leroy Sane at city is incredible

I suppose we don’t know the details of the deal. It’s not as if he’s approaching us asking for a high signing on fee. The one thing that conflicts me is what happens with Hamer.

If the Plan A is to play Hamer out left drifting in or to do the same with O’Hare then the expectation on Matondo to come and add pace later on for the last 10-20 isn’t that high.

Once you allocate wages though it’s done. You can’t spend them twice.

Another part of me thinks that this sort of signing, is one that can be picked up on loan and to a decent level in the last knockings of the window, especially if there remains a possibility that Hamer goes. I hope he stays. Worth far more than any fee and at 30 next year probably a chance he may even extend if he’s happy playing with his pal, O’Hare. If he does go then you want a far better player than Matondo in the building.

Then my thoughts turn to Oné. We play one up top and that’s 3 forwards not starting. We play 2 up top and he may get some minutes. If he’s considered as an alternative left side option then he’ll get more. Not if Matondo is there blocking the way he won’t.

I’d really like Oné to be no 3 striker and have more of a chance of game time. I part wonder if we are playing Cannon so much to invite offers. I’d happily invite offers from 5m, keep Hamer and play Oné more. Adding Matondo is an easier one then, though the greedy one in me would prefer a Jack Clarke or Ben Brereton-Diaz.
 
Or maybe his trial is up and they're looking into a deal? I think Wilder may be signing two left sided players? Hamer playing on the left now is probably because we literally have no left wingers/left sided players as he's chosen Chong to play on the right.

United don't ask the CMs to attack and rarely attack with both full backs simultaneously. At some point, there has to be a concession to chance creation, and accommodating Hamer in a role that puts him in good attacking positions and with less defensive responsibility could be that.
 



I take this back, obviously isn't him as he isn't training with us anymore
