Baptiste is hardly next off the academy conveyor, he signed for us about 18 months ago!

We've had a lot of success with academy recruitment. On the field and off it.

The owners would be wise to plough some additional funding into it and not let Wilder get his hands on everything.

If we sign Souttar, it'll be like signing two new defenders because there's no way that it doesn't improve Tanganga to have a calm, commanding presence next to him in the back line.
Souttar was a brilliant partner for Ahmedhodžić and I'd expect him to be the same for Japhet as well.

Of course, this is all dependent on Harry staying healthy and us not cashing in on Tanganga to fund the Souttar deal.

Hopefully the emergence of Jamal Baptiste offers us an alternative to Soutts if he signs. The lad looks like he could be the next off the conveyor in terms of stepping up from the academy.

He certainly carries a physical presence in the way big Harry does from the couple of pre season matches I’ve watched.

Signing Souttar wouldn't suddenly make United as good as the defence in the 1st half of 24/25. Although that was a good defence, the goals against number was unsustainable, United were having an element of fortune to keep so many clean sheets.

It fixes a specific problem in the air but the midfield that was screening that defence was Souza (playing like one of the best players in the division pre injury) and Arblaster at his (so far) peak. It's more likely that United would concede 40+ with 46 games of Souttar than under that.

I don't either, but Anel looked a hell of a lot better next to Souttar than he did when paired with Robinson.
Just like I'd imagine Tanganga to look better next to Souttar than he did next to Bindon or McGuinness.

When he played in defence I’ve never felt so calm defending corners and crosses.

It almost became boring because I knew there was no way the opposition could score.
The only way to score was to do what Leeds did in the away match….cross it hard and low to the edge of the box for someone running in from deep.
They scored their opening goal from a corner but 9 times out of 10 that snap shot flies high into the back of the stand.

100%. I'm not saying Souttar is a bad player. For the right fee, he's a no brainer signing. I just think there's an expectation that United will suddenly become a very good defensive team because he's there and I don't think that's the case, especially when his availability is seemingly going to be a gamble

Agreed. I think we need another CB as backup for Souttar and Tanganga. Unless we have a young un ready to step up.

The problem with that is, Souttar is a bit of an outlier as a player. You can't really replace him like for like so you will need to have 2 defensive plans available

Yes but even if we do sign him we still need back up, Baptiste is young and needs experience playing with the likes of Souttar if he gets the chance but saviour Souttar will need back up ready in case of injury but I'm certain CW will have that covered, Mcguinness 6'4" may do!

No, he's not involved at all and they've always been separate. Steve Holmes who runs it joined in 2015

Why would Forest let us have Bindon if hes only going to be back up

If we sign Souttar and can shift McGuinness on, I wouldn't mind us going for Helik at Oxford as backup to Souttar.
Nowhere near the levels of Souttar but he is a big commanding centre half (6 foot 3) and would be able to step in to his role without disrupting the dynamic.
That would leave Tanganga with Baptiste as his back up for the second, more mobile, centre half role.

Sure I read somewhere that Helik as a nominal release clause after their relegation. It's not a signing to set pulses racing but it would be a sensible backup option.

Would imagine Forest will want him to kick on from last season and only loan him to a club where’s he sees plenty of game time.

Would imagine they put in a loan agreement clause where if he doesn’t play then he costs more.
The point is…if he’s going to be a constant bench warmer then we aren’t attractive to Forest or Bindon….at his stage he needs 1st team championship football.

I feel that the actual back 4 would be substantially better with Souttar, takes a lot of weight off of Tanganga,

It's the midfield in front that needs to improve, need a destroyer next to Jairo, or just a physical player which I'd be looking towards De Keersmaecker. Impressed me last season.
