Heard a few rumours that hes having a medical today. Does anyone actually know if this is correct?

Wouldn't be surprised if we need to move McGuinness on before we can afford it.
 
Absolute colossus in his time with us, and he would still be a fantastic signing if he comes back 90% of the player he was in that period.

That said, a deal supposedly approaching £10m for a player thats had two injuries totalling over 800 days out seems incredibly risky to me. He's played 8 games since a 16 month injury and we're happy to drop that much money on him?!

Our squad is very very short on quality, so putting all our eggs in the Souttar basket feels a bit mad to me. His knee or achilles go again and he's sidelined for a year and we've broken the bank for nothing.

If he plays 46 games, we're laughing... but Sheffield United don't tend to do well on the injury front. Feeling very torn on this one.

A very reasonable post and one which I think most would agree with.

All I would say is that we don't really know how many eggs we have and how many baskets we are plonking them in at this stage. I have no doubts though that other targets will be lined up (should this fall through) and that we will be bringing in at least 1 more CB anyway.

Like all signings, this is a gamble, but probably more so due to the injuries. The risk, as you say is that we blow what is probably a big hole in our budget for a player to spend months out of action again. The reward however, could be invaluable if he performs anything like he did last time and remains fit.

On balance, I think it's just about worth it. But assuming he does sign, my sphincter muscle will be tested severely every time he goes down injured.

He's never played 40 games in a season and hasn't managed more than 21 since the Covid year
 
Boom or bust.

If fit and firing, probably the best Centre Back in the division. Could see Tanganga thriving next to him and giving the whole back line a lift.

All that counts for fuck all if injured. You’d like to think a thorough medical suggests that his two major injuries aren’t linked to any underlying issue, have no lasting damage and he’s been hugely unlucky.

If he plays 35 league games for us I’d have us in the top 6 without doubt.
 
It is a gamble to keep us a team who can challenge at the top

If he stays fit, we'll be top 6

If he doesn't, we could be bottom half, miles adrift

If we severely limit spending elsewhere, it's justifiable. We're able to get by in other areas without spending much, if Hamer stays especially

Central midfield is the only place we might have to spend but I think we'll leave that late and see how it falls, with Peck, and with loan options

We still need to be getting another CB as well, to cover (hopefully) Souttar
 
His injury proneness might be a bit blown out of proportion tbf. Two relatively bad injuries, but one was a freak injury that could happen to anyone. Only the knee injury worries me a bit.

Agreed, feels like a huge gamble. It feels, with no real evidence other than gut feel and maybe common sense, like someone of his size might be more likely to have a serious leg injury re-occur.

Of course, but you don't get the impression there are many eggs left unless we ship out some of our prized chickens. And even then, sales are to help balance the books by the sound of things.

Agree with everything you've said though - it's a huge gamble but at least there is a strong argument it's one worth taking.

Following said serious injury and limited playing time, he then went to the World Cup, where he looked like he could definitely do the job we need him to do
 
Players fitness changes though and some come back much stronger than before, so yes, it may be a gamble but let's keep the glass half full. Bamfords injury record with Leeds wasn't fantastic at all but touch wood, he's been fine since he joined us.

Doesn't really count if he misses games because they chose not play him. It seemed like they signed him for a large fee then regretted it, I am sure this was mentioned when we first signed him on loan.

I expect they may have not played him as there may have been possible add-ons on the deal that they didn't want to activate.
