How many times did we wear this shirt? Bonus points for knowing which teams we wore it against. The only one I can remember is a 2-0 defeat at Forest.

In Danny Hall's United kit book, he says it was only worn twice. Though it was also worn in the Dane Whitehouse testimonial game with purple shorts which I never knew we had.

I do vaguely remember the Rotherham one GeorgeDonis1889 mentions. So that would be at least 3 times in the league with the Forest one and a then the Preston one Panini mentions.

Can anyone confirm the Rotherham one? It would make sense with our home kit clashing and our away kit being all white.

Definitely wore it in the season opener vs Preston as Panini says. I clearly remember a match report describing us as 'mincing around' in our gold shirts!

Rotherham August 2001 confirmed, with gold shorts and socks

Twice in the league (Rotherham and Preston) and away at Lincoln in the cup….(I think).

I was at all of them.

Ditched for being “camp”. I remember a very homophobic response to it in one of the red tops.

We weren't in the same division as Rotherham in 2000-01.

We didn't play them in either of the cups either.

Did we continue wearing it the season after?

Pre-season friendly at Millmoor in August 2000 and I'm sure we wore it the gold kit then too.

We won 2-0, Curtis Woodhouse scored an unusual overhead kick that looped in off the back post. Never seen footage and not having much joy now.

Someone has incredibly uploaded nearly 6 hours of the ITV Sport channel from that evening, it was shown live.

Kickoff is at 1h24m.

But what sort of wizardry would one be using to locate that in a search because it wouldn’t come up searching ‘Sheffield United’ …?

Only just read your previous posts.

The 2000/01 season review doesn't include the Preston, Pompey or Crewe away games.

The Preston game appears to be the only time we wore the lilac socks with the gold shirt and shorts (with the Dane Whitehouse game being the only appearance of the lilac shorts). We wore all gold at Lincoln and Forest, before introducing the white away shirt in December, although we didn't wear that much either. We wore white with black shorts and white socks at Barnsley (I'd guess this is what we wore at Crewe too) and all white at Southampton.

All other away games we wore the home shirt, usually with the home black shorts and red socks, twice with black shorts and white socks (probably three times as I'd guess that's what we wore at Pompey) and seven times with white shorts and red socks.

In 01/02, Rotherham were the only team we played who wore red and white shirts so that was the only time the gold kit reappeared.

Nothing special tbh, just got lucky with a bit of speculative detective work.

Searching "Rotherham United Sheffield United 2001/02" produced this result:

...which is only a 2 minute video of the build-up:

Even stranger was that it was only uploaded in December 2024.

Anyway I checked the comments:

...and there we are!

Is that all from memory?!

Is there any footage from the Lincoln game does anyone know?
