What do we reckon - could Baptiste cut it as a backup CB in the Championship next season?
Backup? He should start. As another poster said on a recent thread, we need to transition to a model where younger players have a genuine pathway to the first XI. That is the only way we will ever come remotely close to breaking even. From that reading he is extremely close to good enough already, if not there.

Players need to have a pathway, but they currently do. Have we mishandled anyone over the last few years? Baptiste should be in the squad next year and given opportunities but if we have a team of Baptiste’s we’ll do well to finish in mid table. People get far too excited about players just because they’re a touch younger than incumbents.

Only thing I'd say is that there is a pretty big gap in quality between the top of the Championship and bottom of League One. It's a league where Ashley Fletcher and Jack Marriot are star strikers.

So? See if he can bridge it.

Marsh, One and Baptise should have been out on loan last year, as should a few others.

The issue is they get to 21-22 years of age and we've no idea if they can step up because they've had a series of month long loans and are expected to come straight into the first team and perform.

It doesn't matter how old they are, or how long they have been on loan if the loan is not replicating the level you want them to perform at. You are not going to know if someone will perform in the Championship until you play them in the Championship. That may go against some "but but but men's football" ancient philosophies but that's what it is

The Marsh comments are a bit concerning. He has a load of talent, but not really kicking on in senior football like I'd hoped he would.
Marsh has add a difficult 2 years with injuries and that has held him back.Falkirk like him and hopefully he can finish the season back in their squad. He will be back with us next season and hopefully push on,l really like Marshy we have to get a tune out of him. The talent is there.

Next step for him is to add a bit of muscle/strength and a loan to a team competing at the top end of league one.

Baptiste I can see why people are saying he should be back up next season etc, but he needs to continue his development and playing regularly, hes not going to get that as a back up here. I would like to see another season loan but to a championship team, such as Lincoln/Portsmouth/Charlton (if pompey stay up). Starting regularly in one of those teams will give us a real understanding if he can cut it at this level and also continues his development where he would be ready made for our starting line up season after.

I would also add a recall clause just incase he is performaning well.

Really interesting to see how Baptiste has got on. Considering Bindon was a good player in League 1 when we signed him, its not a huge leap to think "Big Baps" could be involved in our first team next season. As we are every summer, we will be needing a new CB and bringing through someone like him could make a huge difference.

If we could have C O'hare playing in a number 10 role with Marsh to replace him after 60-70 minutes, I think this gets him moving into our first team.

Blacker I assume is one to loan out again next season but but some good potential.

Cheers Panchero!

I'd rather have baptiste on the bench next season and shift McGuinness on somewhere else. Same for Marsh over someone like Chong.

Not disagreeing, but I think if we move McGuinness on, we need someone of a similar height and build to replace him.

Bindon, at 6ft 3, is our tallest defender, if we have no McGuinness. Baptiste and Tanganga are shorter than Bindon.
