Watch alot of games and highlights every week and it always amazes me that grounds have glaring empty seats but their recorded attendance is 28k/29k/30k plus every home game?

Im on about clubs like;
Coventry
Derby
Ipswich
Saints
Leicester

I know ST holders do count no matter but you can tell when Bramall Lane is around 25k/26k due to a "crap opposition" playing.

I know some will say "why you bothered" but I was just curious that's all because definitely Derby and Leicester do tell some 🤥 and I think clubs like that just lie to look big for their rivals.

And when there's a crap away following you know our attendance is going to drop but with other sides...

You forgot to mention Wednesday only got 23,000 on Monday against a huge Derby County with a significant away following;)

Derby had bottom tier and took 3,900. That means less than 20,000 piglets in attendance but it doesn't matter cus they sold out for Ipswich.;)

I often think the same about us.

28,000 my arse.
Our Saturday attendances are easy to predict based on away support and where we are in the league due to the numbe of season tickets we sell. Near the top and big away support 30k give or take 1k, near the top and poor away support 28k, doing poorly and big away support 27-28k, doing poorly and poor away support 25-26k

There are clearly way more empty seats than that every single game. There's nowhere near 28,000 in the ground, never mind 30,000 even with the away end full.

Why do we only get 2.5k at the Sty…Is it a SYP thing or a Wendy thing?

Not sure if clubs do lie.

Presumably they have to declare gate receipts and if there's a big discrepancy between gate money and bums on seats the clubs are paying tax on the tickets. Discrepancy will alert the tax office won't it?

Why pay tax on a gate of 29,000 when there's only 22,000 in there (ST accepted as these are treated as tickets sold)?

HMRC have no interest in numbers in the ground since people stopped paying in cash. It used to be a thing though, with attendances being routinely understated.

I've always assumed it was a tit-for-tat thing. We only give them the bottom tier of the BL end so they give us the equivalent - even though they could easily give us more.

However I'm sure that SYP and the SAG would have kittens if either club tried to give the other 4k tickets.

because definitely Derby and Leicester
I have been in the box at Derby and watched the computer count entries several times. Unless it was a match of particular significance the actual bums on seats would be between 2000 and 3500 lower than the declared attendance which was calculated as all season tickets + tickets sold for that match that attended.

It is on their end. We don't have the seats spare. The club gave Forest both tiers for the play offs and got murdered for it. The last time before that was Liverpool for the first PL game under Warnock. Cup rules are different.

Yeah, but it's still a clear example of how the attendances given don't match reality, regardless of the circumstances.
Agreed - although what it does measure (how many tickets were sold) it was actually matters to anyone doing the counting. I.e. How much money have we taken in from this?
In terms of knowing how many people were actually there watching the game using their ticket, I’d speculate that the reason this isn’t counted is because there isn’t really an actual reason why anyone would care.

I care. Actual attendances are a factual guide to the loyalty of a club's fanbase. This is important when debating, especially with Wednesdayites. I am proud of how many people attend Bramall Lane. It is remarkable. UTB

I think it should be accurate and used as a way of assessing a club's fan base in terms of actual turnout. If not, clubs just say they gave any unsold tickets to schools or junior sports teams and claim they've sold out every week.

The clubs do the maths .

They know how many are actually in the ground and weigh this against pricing policies, matchday revenues, costs etc so they to an extent control attendance to maximise revenue and profit.

Therefore actual attendance is less significant than maximising revenue.

Over at S6 they have miscalculated the effect of being piss poor on the pitch so whilst an attendance of 22k was announced as tickets sold , there were apparently around 14k in the ground .
I'd hasten a guess that at that level matchday revenues fall far short of forecast.

Watch efl highlights every week and there's only Ipswich ground which looks full regular but...

Coventry City - 29,981
Leicester City - 29,730
Derby County - 28,400
Southampton - 28,368
Ipswich Town - 28,213
Sheffield United - 27,729

Yeah they count ST holders but I highly doubt thousands buy ST to not go often.
Cheap shots again. You struggle to get a ticket for the home end at Coventry. There's 26,000 STH's and the away allocation which was recently reduced to give the home support more tickets. The STH's that can't make a game put their tickets on a platform and they are resold. We can never reach our full capacity because of segregation problems.

Isn't it amazing how finishing in the top 6 for the first time in nearly 50 years has an upturn in attendances.
