he gave a penalty away with his stupidity? = i dont even think it was a a pen

It wasn’t stupidity, but it’s something to learn from. Premier League defenders now close down shots and crosses with their hands clasped behind their back. It’s a bit daft, but it’s what the modern interpretation of the law dictates.

With his arms yeah. Not allowed under the rules I’m afraid. The shot is about 10 yards away from him no reason to have his arms up. Shot isn’t troubling the keeper and at 2-0 we aren’t under any pressure at that point.
It's pretty difficult to dive to block a shot with your hands by your sides. It's a stupid rule in this circumstance

He did all that was asked of him yesterday, especially with Mee doing his best next to him to make a right balls of it.

Penalty was a bit unfortunate but other than a ball he should have gone and attacked in our box late on that he left to Seriki to deal with, it was an uneventful game with no cock ups. He's a bit like Robinson was where a good game is one where there were no obvious blunders.

He still always looks one wrong move away from a catastrophe but so did Chris Basham and he went on to be a club legend.

Not sure McGuinness is getting to that sort of level of admiration however but he did a solid job yesterday against a decent side and we can't say fairer than that.

Nobody going to praise him for probably his best game for us yesterday? Or does everybody on this forum only like criticizing our players. I do think this lad needs a run of games before we can truly judge, was excellent in the first half against Stoke before Christmas, and excellent yesterday, couldn't do much for the penalty, and think he will be a useful squad player. Not a bad option to have, as last year we had 3 centre backs in total. Hope others agree.
The team protected him from the things he's bad at (1v1s, chasing, passing) and he mostly won his head it/kick it battles. He's always going to be hugely limited but if he can win those battles, he's just about playable.

I know that's dambing with faint praise 😂 But yes, for his ability level, yesterday was probably his best performance

In fairness, shouldn't you want your team protecting your centre halves? Hes a good squad player and nothing more. But we should be willing to dish out praise as much as we dish out the criticism

He was OK yesterday. George Hirst is a league 1 striker. He dropped a bollock in the first half and he gave a penalty away with his stupidity. His best game for us though but nothing amazing. Some of our fans love mediocrity. UTB
No way George Hirst is L1 - he ragged us around down there and scored a great goal.
He's a constant threat & nuisance to defences.
We dealt with him well yesterday and he was withdrawn coz we made him largely ineffective.

I praised him. He played well for the level of ability he has

He had a decent game against a very average striker (baffling as to why they weren't in for Bamford - unless location was a factor).
He shouldn't be starting regular games for us, mobility wise he's just not up to it.
But did his job - I'd welcome Tanganga and Bindon (never thought I'd say that start of the season) back personally.

Played well the last two games since his forced return.
NOT a penalty on Saturday!!!
Can be a towering figure but expect mistakes under this disastrous regime.
Ipswich has 3 chances in the first half I can remember at the Lane
TWO were created by Wilders bat shit 'I'm a Pepshit Coco the Clown' follower dangerous, pointless, boring at best endless pissing about at the back.
First was Ben Mee on Saturday similarly forced to change his game despite ALL HIS experienc'.
Cannot remember who caused the second one.
IF the sight of McGuiness at Southampton as last man on the half way line dribbling between two pressing attackers with the sole aim of making a totally unproductive 10 yards pass to Seriki on the touch line does not put the fear of God into you at the total stupidity of this possession crap
Then congrats - you are an imbecile like Wilder and can proudly sing
'He's one of Our Own'
Along with the BBC
And if you 'think' I'm hard on Wilder - then then how many of our chances were created by the same imbecilic risk taking by Ipswich?

This is the exact sort of dedication you want from a player. He may not be the most glamorous, but he'll give us his all fair play.
I will back him as much as possible whilst he plays for us. Proper squad player.

I thought it looked like he dislocated his shoulder against Soton.

Isn't this what people want? Someone willing to put his body on the line and give his all for the shirt? He'll do for me.

Still think there's a decent player in Mark and he is a much better ball playing CB than you'd first expect.

Is it normal to play 3 days later though? I don't know personally but I doubt you would if other options were available.
It depends on the level of "discolation" from what I saw of the incident I don't think it was properly fully out so it's hard to say.
He will certainly have some discomfort but with painkillers he should be fine. Biggest issue for him now is if it happens more frequently which is sometimes the case especially with the pushing and shoving that goes on in today's games.

This is why I wonder if it was wise to play 3 days later. Even if it was strapped up it must be more likely to dislocate again if taking another blow a few days later

This gives me the impression it wasn't a full dislocation perhaps just a spasm/twinge but who's to know other than the player and staff. Too many smoke n mirrors tbf.

I think as long as he has more athletic and quicker players alongside him, he will be fine. That said he did OK alongside Mee on Saturday (bar the pen) and didn't do much wrong at Soton.

If I wanted to play him regularly I wouldn't pair him with Mee.

I know I'm not reading what I think I'm reading right now.

He's literally in the team until Bindon or Tanganga are available and it's that simple.
